We are living in a world in which the outrageous is being forced down our throats and called normal. If you disagree with a particular activity, lifestyle, or practice that has been endorsed and embraced by the media and those on the left, then you are the one who is “abnormal.” You are homophobic, transphobic, racist, or whatever. So what are we supposed to think about Oregon’s law which allows children as young as fifteen to get a sex change without parental notification or consent?

As reported by Fox News, “[U]nder a first-in-the-nation policy quietly enacted in January that many parents are only now finding out about, 15-year-olds are now allowed to get a sex-change operation. Many residents are stunned to learn they can do it without parental notification — and the state will even pay for it through its Medicaid program, the Oregon Health Plan.”

So… in the age where a man can act like a woman, dress like a woman, and call himself a woman — and we are supposed to consider that to be normal — now government is bringing the procedure right to our children’s doorstep. How in the world is this possible?

The medical evidence is clear, and liberals choose to ignore it because it doesn’t fit into their “anything goes” (other than Christianity) mentality: sex change procedures continue to harm the individual and does not provide the “change” the patient is looking for. Dr. Paul McHugh, former psychiatrist in chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recently commented in the Wall Street Journal that “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.”

We at Johns Hopkins University–which in the 1960s was the first American medical center to venture into “sex-reassignment surgery”–launched a study in the 1970s comparing the outcomes of transgendered people who had the surgery with the outcomes of those who did not. Most of the surgically treated patients described themselves as “satisfied” by the results, but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery. And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a “satisfied” but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs.

So why in the world would this procedure be offered to fifteen-year-olds without parental consent? Jenn Burleton, the executive director of TransActive Gender Center in Portland (wow, that’s a title!), said the idea that a fifteen-year-old could get the procedure without parental consent is “unrealistic.” However, Burleton added, “It would be a separate but equal implementation of it to say for all other physician- recommended or evidence-based medical care, youth in Oregon can access that at age 15 but for this one they have to wait longer.”

The problem here is larger than the issue of children getting sex change operations. The real issue is the erosion of the fundamental cornerstones of society — family, religion, marriage — with “government” serving as the only beacon of authority. If marriage is based on a government definition, then anything goes. If government trumps religion, then anything goes. If parental rights are subverted by the government, then the family unit ceases to have power.

If an adult man wants to pretend to be a woman, so be it. If a woman wants to pretend to be a man, have at it. But our children should not be subjected to any of this. Let them be kids! Childhood is short enough without the government stepping in and trying to end it too soon with over sexualization and perversion. Enough is enough.
