WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) – President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the nation Tuesday evening after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of all charges in the death of George Floyd.
“Today’s verdict is a step forward,” said Biden.
However, the president said it’s not enough without change in policing laws.
“This systemic racism is a stain on our nation’s soul. The knee on the neck of justice for Black Americans,” said Biden.
Biden spoke about his conversation with the Floyd family and recounted his conversations with Floyd’s daughter who he also spoke to at Floyd’s funeral.
“She said to me then, I’ll never forget it, ‘Daddy changed the world.’ And I told her this afternoon daddy did change the world,” said Biden.
Harris, the first Black woman to serve as vice president, said racism was keeping the country from fulfilling its founding promise of “liberty and justice for all.”
“It is not just a Black America problem or a people of color problem. it is a problem for every American,” she said. “It is holding our nation back from reaching our full potential.”
“A measure of justice is not the same as equal justice,” said Harris.
Chauvin, 45, was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was declared dead after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against his neck for about nine minutes on May 25. Floyd was arrested on suspicion of using a fake $20 bill to buy cigarettes at a convenience store. His death sparked protests and civil unrest in Minneapolis and across the U.S. over police brutality.
The second-degree murder count, the most serious charge, carries up to 40 years in prison.
Biden and Harris also called for the Senate to pass the George Floyd Policing Act which would include the banning of chokeholds at the federal level, ending qualified immunity, and creating a national police misconduct registry so fired officers can’t be hired at another department.
“George Floyd was murdered almost a year ago. There is meaningful police reform legislation in his name…It shouldn’t take a year to get this done,” said Biden.
Biden emphasized throughout his speech that systemic reform is necessary and this verdict must only be the beginning of change.
“George Floyd’s last words were “I can’t breathe.” We can’t let those words die with him. We have to keep hearing those words. We must not turn away. This can be a moment of significant change.”

This **** makes my blood boil. Justice is not about one side or the other “winning”. Justice is an outcome sought to resolve issues that will support societal values and benefit all. It is not something granted to the loudest voice nor is it something granted to appease rioters and militant activists.
George Floys is one of hundreds of Blacks killed evert day—many at the hands of other Blacks. Do you hear any outcry for any of the other nameless victims whose lives are lost? No—because they don’t fit the narrative promoted by the Left and the Media. They have brainwashed so many people into believing that Blacks are still oppressed, kept down, and targeted—particularly by police—so they can play on people’s emotions to stir up hatred and mob hysteria to paint a picture that is far removed from reality. Suddenly, every police officer is guilty by association of targeting Blacks, regardless of the merits of their actions. Lawbreakers are the new heroes—law protectors are the new enemy.
The Left’s campaign to rewrite the dictionary and change the meaning of select words smacks of pure ignorance. If justice is the objective, then acknowledge lawlessness for what it is, identify the participants, and support those entrusted to preserve the law. Think rationally people—think rationally and act accordingly.
The left/liberals don’t care about the truth or about the law.. look at how they are honoring George Floyd as some kind of hero that the kids should look up to.. he was a career criminal!! He as a drug addict… He’s NOT someone to be honored as some kind of hero.. The manifestations of ‘systemic’ racism were disappearing since the day of the reverend Matin Luther King, his ‘real’ peaceful protests and his vision for the future which many embraced. The concept of racism being systemic was revived during the Obama years when incidents were portrayed, often wrongfully without any information, as being racist. Suddenly those who had worked together for so long found themselves accused of what they worked so hard to end by merely being the wrong color. BLM adherents and other black leaders are creating their own odious segregation, championing rules which are mirrors of the Jim Crow laws they accuse others of passing.

It was the mayor that falsely claimed that had Floyd been white he’d be alive. He was correct in saying that because had he been white Floyd would have complied with police.

All these accusations of systemic racism forces me to once again confess. I am white. I have blue eyes, for pity’s sake. All of my known ancestors were white. That am I to do?
My brothers and I played with the black kids next door when we were toddlers.
When our parents allowed us out of our own yard, we also played with the Hispanic kids a block away.
Later we played with another family of black kids two blocks away.
Since we lived on the “poor side of town” we went to a very diverse grade school with even more “ethnic” kids who were our friends.
In high school there were even more “minority” kids with which we were friends.
Later, in college, I was friends with Asians, Jews, Arabs, and people from all over the world.
Throughout my several employment assignments, I worked with people of a very wide variety of ethnicities.
When my father died a few years ago, a black pastor helped officiate at the funeral.
When my mother died recently, the same black pastor did the same again.
(This pastor was one of the “black kids” I played with many years ago.)
But wait, there is more; when my (white) sister-in-law became disabled, my wife and I raised our half-black niece as our own daughter.
Her baby boy is fully welcome as our grandson.
So, I am a poster boy for racist white supremaism…NOT; regardless of the several times I have been falsely accused.
BTW: There is only ONE race, the HUMAN RACE. All subdivisions are IRRELEVANT details.
