It is becoming more apparent that there really are “two Americas” as left-winger John Edwards once described. There is the real America and the world around it, and then there is the America and world that Barack Obama and the media want you to believe. One would think that with all the turmoil in the MIddle East that the media would want to find out what’s really going on, right? Nope. They are more interested in attacking Mitt Romney. Thankfully, Romney is standing firm.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and I apologize in advance for anyone who’s dwelling in a comfy boulder right now), you have heard what’s going on in the Islamic world. Four Americans were murdered in the American Consulate in Libya. Intelligence reports and eyewitness accounts are lending more credence to the notion that the attacks were premeditated. Obama and his minions are spinning a tale of YouTube videos and spontaneous demonstrations.
This leaves the media with two choices. Since the YouTube talking point and the administration’s position that the attacks were NOT planned have been well played out in the media, this leaves “journalists” with two choices. 1) They can try to find out what’s really going on and hold Obama’s feet to the fire, or 2) they can find a story to take people’s minds off the turmoil in the Middle East. You guessed it! They picked Option 2.
It turns out that during a fundraising event for GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, some bozo recorded some off the cuff comments from Romney in which he described the electorate and the fact that so many people in this country won’t vote for him. He noted that so many don’t pay income taxes and they have come to depend on the government rather than relying on themselves.
So what happened next? The video was posted on YouTube, and nothing much came of it until it was picked up by a left-wing magazine called Mother Jones. Here’s the report from The Blaze:
Mother Jones on Monday released undercover footage of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney candidly addressing donors during a private, off-the-record fundraiser.
“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it,” the former Massachusetts governor can be heard saying.
“That, that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax,” he continued, adding “so our message of low taxes doesn’t connect.”
“[M]y job is, is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Again… this video was shot in someone’s house! This was a fundraiser at the home of Marc Leder in Boca Raton, Florida. Someone at the event shot this video and then released it.

Thankfully, The Blaze points out one of the tactics of the left… taking things out of context. Here’s that quote in context from the full article on Mother Jones:
There is a perception, “Oh, we were born with a silver spoon, he never had to earn anything and so forth.” Frankly, I was born with a silver spoon, which is the greatest gift you can have: which is to get born in America.
Nice quote… too bad most people won’t ever hear the whole thing.
Now, Romney is left having to address this so-called gaffe. I say so-called, because it’s not a gaffe. It’s true. Close to 50% of all working Americans do NOT pay income tax. We have former President George W. Bush to thank for that one. And it’s also true that there are many, many people who feel that they are owed or entitled to something from the government. Those people will always vote for someone like Barack Obama.
As Fox News reports, Romney said that although not “elegantly stated,” his comments were “a message which I am going to carry and continue to carry, which is that the president’s approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn’t as attractive to them. Therefore I’m not likely to draw them into my campaign as effectively as those in the middle.”
The Democrats have pounced:
Democrats seized on the tape, claiming they showed the GOP candidate was out of touch. Obama’s re-election campaign released a web video Tuesday that asked voters to watch Romney’s comments and respond. In the ad, one woman said she felt “sick to my stomach.”
The Obama campaign slammed the comments Monday, calling them “shocking.”
“It’s hard to serve as president for all Americans when you’ve disdainfully written off half the nation,” said Jim Messina, campaign manager for Obama for America.
It’s admirable that Romney stood by his statements. However, he should have done more. The best thing to do is to be on offense. The next best thing to do is to turn defense into offense. Romney shouldn’t simply have clarified his comments, he should have reemphasized them. There are too many people dependent on government. There are too many people who feel that government should pay for their way of life. This is not part of the American Dream… and so on.
Keep in mind that all of this is going on as we are learning more and more about the events in LIbya. And yet, on the home pages of many news web sites, including Fox News, the Romney story is the story of the day.
