In one of the most bizarre actions in an already bizarre presidential election cycle, Donald Trump has come out on the attack. But his target is not Ted Cruz or John Kasich or even Hillary Clinton. This time, Trump took to Twitter to threaten Ted Cruz’s wife Heidi, by saying he would “spill the beans” about her. What’s going on in this campaign?

As reported by Politico.com, Trump got on Twitter on Tuesday and wrote, “Lyin’ Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”

Trump was referring to an ad produced by the anti-Trump super PAC “Make America Awesome.” The PAC is anti-Trump, but does not support any particular candidate and has no ties to the Cruz campaign.

Trump’s tweet is an apparent reference to the anti-Trump super PAC Make America Awesome, not affiliated with Cruz’s campaign, running Facebook ads featuring a photo of Trump’s wife posing nude for British GQ in 2000.

Minutes later, Trump tweeted, “Lyin’ Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”

Cruz responded less than 30 minutes later, tweeting, “Pic of your wife not from us. Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, you’re more of a coward than I thought. #classless”

Liz Mair, who co-founded the anti-Trump super PAC, took to Twitter to set Trump straight about the ad’s provenance.

Fox News reports that Cruz took Trump to task again on Wednesday by saying that Trump’s behavior may have been driven by a “bad night in Utah.” Cruz won the Utah GOP contest on Tuesday night.

“When Donald gets scared, when he gets angry, when he gets threatened … So last night Donald threatened my wife, he went directly after my wife,” Cruz said.
