WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday brought an end to lawsuits over whether Donald Trump illegally profited off his presidency.
The justices threw out Trump’s challenge to lower court rulings that had allowed lawsuits to go forward alleging that he violated the Constitution’s emoluments clause by accepting payments from foreign and domestic officials who stay at the Trump International Hotel and patronize other businesses owned by the former president and his family.
The high court also ordered the lower court rulings thrown out as well and directed appeals courts in New York and Richmond, Virginia, to dismiss the suits as moot now that Trump is no longer in office.
The outcome leaves no judicial opinions on the books in an area of the law that has been rarely explored in U.S. history.
The cases involved suits filed by Maryland and the District of Columbia, and high-end restaurants and hotels in New York and Washington, D.C., that “found themselves in the unenviable position of having to compete with businesses owned by the President of the United States.”
The suits sought financial records showing how much state and foreign governments have paid the Trump Organization to stay and eat at Trump-owned properties.
Other cases involving Trump remain before the Supreme Court, or in lower courts.
Trump is trying to block the Manhattan district attorney ’s enforcement of a subpoena for his tax returns. Lower courts are weighing congressional subpoenas for Trump’s financial records. And the justices also have before them Trump’s appeal of a decision forbidding him from blocking critics on his Twitter account. Like the emoluments cases, Trump’s appeal would seem to be moot now that he is out of office and also had his Twitter account suspended.

The writers of the Constitution and their advisers did not intend for presidents to be without their usual businesses. George Washington owned productive land. If a foreign purchaser obtained whiskey from Mount Vernon, Washington’s estate while he was president, it would not have been considered a violation of the emoluments clause. Jefferson’s estate, Monticello, sold nails. These framers of the Constitution were not thinking of such activities. What they were thinking of is exemplified by the Clinton and Biden crime families.
To these mindless Democrats, it’s not too late to impeach George Washington for owning slaves in spite of the fact he freed them upon his death, unlike Jefferson. I’ve been to Mt. Vernon and seen how he grew fruit trees whose images reflect the Espaliared American Tree of Liberty that Jefferson said needed to be watered with the blood of it’s patiots and tyrants. It is times like these he was warning us of. Those walls behind the trees served to keep the winds of war and tyrants and social insects from infesting it.
Please stop referring to them as “democrats”… please use the phrase communists
They’d also be able to impeach Reagan, in absentia…
“The cases involved suits filed by Maryland and the District of Columbia, and high-end restaurants and hotels in New York and Washington, D.C., that “found themselves in the unenviable position of having to compete with businesses owned by the President of the United States.” Everything has been shut down because of Covid. Secondly, Trump had these businesses long before he was President. Oh, how I love these fools and idiots / communists in society. If one has a great product, a hotel for instance, the hotel will do a great business, no matter who owns it. Secondly, life is about competing for business. Oh, I forgot, liberals do not believe in competing, they want everything handed to them.
No they don’t. THEY WANT only what THEY FEEL should exist, to stay, everything else needs to be shut down.
That’s right… everyone gets a trophy … and guess where I’d like to place it …while they receive it.
The only “Trophy” they deserve, is a public Branding, as we exile them, into deep space!
Can the imaginary National Socialist Nanzi Pelosi Impeachment trial be far behind in dismissal of an impossibility to impeach a private citizen who has already legally left his office? They say you can impeach a ham sandwich but no-neck Nadler already ate Nanzi’s. Fear of Trump which matches their fear of being found out, has taken their corruption to a whole new level and but for the fact that Biden chose a Veep so odious nobody in their right mind would dare im-peach him, he would be next in line for impeachment payback. Maybe they can do a two for one when we take over the house.
And what of Hunter and Dementia Joe and their numerous foreign ‘enterprises’ ?
I’m glad to see our hard work appointing justices to the SCOTUS has paid off so well.
Those ‘dealings’ are ok.. ONLY IF conservatives do it, is it wrong.
Yep …useless as teats on a snake
