The Obama administration has learned a shocking fact. According to a recent poll, when faced with difficult times, most people do NOT turn to the government for help. This revelation has caused the administration to create a new web site called “Government Made Easy” in order that more people can get aid from the government rather than other sources such as savings or family members.

It’s a disturbing development, but it’s one which shows the true nature of Barack Obama. Rather than government being limited and a short term means of assistance, Obama wants people hooked on government.

As The Weekly Standard pointed out earlier this month, the number of people on welfare is staggering, but rather than work to cut down the number of people on welfare, Obama and his team are actually making it easier to stay on the program.

Obama’s Agriculture Department also put together a campaign to ENCOURAGE people to get on food stamps. Here’s the report from earlier this summer:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been running radio ads for the past four months encouraging those eligible to enroll. The campaign is targeted at the elderly, working poor, the unemployed and Hispanics.

The department is spending between $2.5 million and $3 million on paid spots, and free public service announcements are also airing. The campaign can be heard in California, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and the New York metro area.

“Research has shown that many people — particularly underserved seniors, working poor, and legal immigrants — do not understand the requirements of the program,” said Kevin Concannon, a USDA under secretary.

As was pointed out in that report, “Millions of taxpayer dollars are being spent on a program that the targeted audience is currently doing without. They are getting by without becoming part of the governmental machine that loves to lure people in and keep them in need forever.”

And now here’s the kicker…. Joel Gehrke reports in The Washington Examiner, that because so many people do NOT turn to government first in times of need, that something must be wrong. Gehrke notes a poll that shows where people turn in tough times:

Savings 44%
Family 21%
Credit cards/loans 20%
Government assistance 15%

So, what does that mean? According to Obama’s USA.gov web site, it means that more people need to turn to government first:

“Given that only 15 percent of you turn to government assistance in tough times, we want to make sure you know about benefits that could help you,” USA.gov announced today. The “government made easy’ website has created a “help for difficult financial times” page for people to learn more about the programs.

This is exactly why this country is so messed up. In the past, before the liberal, big government invasion of the 20th century, most assistance was provided by private and religious charities and local governments. As soon as the federal government got involved, it was all downhill from there.

We have debt that we can’t pay. We have budgets that are in the red. And we continue to borrow, borrow, borrow. Yet, Obama wants more people on government assistance. Go figure!
