Joe Biden will take over the official @POTUS Twitter handle if he takes office next month — but will start out with no followers because President Trump won’t agree to roll over the 33 million users who follow the feed.

“Twitter has informed us that as of right now the Biden administration will have to start from zero,” Rob Flaherty, a Biden transition official, tweeted Tuesday.

The same scenario is expected to apply to @FLOTUS, @VP and @PressSec, all of which have millions of engaged followers.

Twitterati who follow Biden or Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be prompted to follow @WhiteHouse, another official handle.

Twitter spokespeople say they are still working out the details of the Twitter handover that is complicated by Trump’s ongoing efforts to overturn the election results.

It’s a 180-degree shift from the first-ever social media handover in 2017, when President Barack Obama left office and his staff urged Twitter to flip all his followers into the accounts controlled by Team Trump.

Trump will remain in total control of @realdonaldtrump. The personal Twitter handle is his biggest social media bullhorn of all, with 83 million followers.

Though Trump will remain a powerhouse on Twitter, the rules of the social media game will change the moment he is no longer president. He won’t be covered by the site’s policy for world leaders, which gives the president wider latitude to tweet unfounded conspiracy theories or flat-out lies.

Instead of a disclaimer for disputed claims, Trump’s tweets may simply be blocked by Twitter.
