(The Center Square) – The House has overwhelmingly voted against the stopgap bill presented to the House floor Thursday evening by Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., after a last-minute scramble.
With 174 yeas and 235 nays, opposition from both Democrats and Republicans tanked the 116-page American Relief Act, 2025 which needed a two-thirds majority to pass.
The measure would have funded the government through March, allocated roughly $100 billion in disaster relief, extended the farm bill for a year, and suspended the debt ceiling until January 2027.
The bill also dropped key concessions Johnson’s original stopgap bill made to Democrats, including a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., a reauthorization of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act, and a future pay raise for members of Congress.
“We reached a bipartisan agreement that will help farmers, families, the future of working-class Americans, children, seniors, veterans, and the men and women in uniform all across the nation and the world,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., told reporters. “That bipartisan agreement has now been detonated.”
A substantial number of Republicans also opposed the stopgap because of the debt suspension, even though most of the “pork” projects had been eliminated.
“My position is simple – I am not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (racking up more debt) without significant & real spending cuts attached to it,” U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, posted on X four hours before the bill reached the floor. “I’ve been negotiating to that end. No apologies.”
Congress has until Friday at midnight to reach a deal before the government shuts down.

It is past time that the U.S. Federal Government and the wimpy Republicans Stop bowing down to the treacherous uncontrolled spending by the Democrats. i.e.. We the taxpayers are forced to totally supporting the Democrat’s illegal Immigrants at the cost of over 25 Billion dollars each and every month.
I found it strange KJP KEPT saying “This was a bipartisan bill”, when ONLY ONE DEMOCRAT voted for it..
What’s the poblem here,??,,,stop combining items together and just present them one individual item bill at a time. Let the Democrats vote down all the good things in our bills that THE PEOPLE want AND NEED, and pay the consequences when the govenment stops woking for THE PEOPLE and only works for their party. Let them have to work for a change like the rest of us, instead of relying upon a few predjudiced committee members dictating what is fit to come up for a vote while the rest don’t even come into the chamber except when the manipulated outcomes are ready for a vote. When you compromise with these devils you are just half the way to administrative hell.
As i have said MANY A TIME.. IF a bill cannot pass on its OWN MERITS, it should be against the law, to ‘append it’ to a bill that must pass.
This seems to be a very convoluted situation. It’s hard to believe that funding for a “new stadium for D.C.” and a “pay raise for congress” would have EVER been part of the continuing resolution. What else is in this pile of dung that we don’t know about? They (GOP) need to be careful about what they do and say right now. Trump doesn’t need to be blasting Chip Roy, a died in the wool conservative, in the process. He’s going to need Roy in the future and it’s not a good time to be making personal enemies. Get together and come up with a compromise. That’s why we won the damn election for God’s sake.
AND with what crappy of a job they’ve been doing, WHAT THE HELL makes a single person there, think they are DESERVING OF a pay rise!?
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “All Americans need to know that Republicans are getting in the way here, and they are the ones who have created this mess. That’s the reality. That’s the fact,” …….NOT
Executive Vice President of the National Taxpayers Union Brandon Arnold said that the Democrats original bill was a mess containing 1500 pages of extraneous provisions, like a new football stadium in washington DC, salary increase for congress at the expense of taxpayers.
Democrats are like spoiled children, they will have temper tantrums and refuse to cut their want list and when the government shuts down, the Democrats will blame the Republicans for not giving them everything that they want the taxpayers to pay for.
But the White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “All Americans need to know that Republicans are getting in the way here, and they are the ones who have created this mess. YES the Republicans are getting in the way, by stopping the Democrats from spending money on unnecessary BS that we don’t have the money for. Hell, Democrats don’t care if we have the money for their BS. Democrats will just raise taxes and borrow the money putting our county even further in debt.
What Johnson should be doing is reducing the size of the gubment, setting up unproductive, non-productive, parasitic leeches called gubment “workers” for dismissal. Advance the conservative agenda dude and get to business.
Lets hope he can do so come jan!
