Here’s something that will get you to scratch your head and wonder, “What was he thinking?” A high school English teacher is in hot water after he repeatedly stomped on an American flag as part of his classroom lesson. The teacher’s actions have led to a suspension, and more fallout is likely to occur.

As reported by WIS Channel 10 in South Carolina, English teacher Scott Compton, had an unusual lesson planned for his high school classes.

Scott Compton is accused of throwing down the American flag and stomping on it in front of his honors English classes.

When Michael Copeland overheard his teenager talking about what her honors II English teacher did with the flag in their classroom, he pressed for details.

“He drew a couple of symbols, like one of them was a cross, and he said, ‘What does this represent,’ and everybody said, ‘Christianity,'” said Copeland.

“Then he proceeds to take down the American flag, and said, ‘This is a symbol, but it’s only a piece of cloth. It doesn’t mean anything,’ and then he throws it down on the floor and then stomps on it, repeatedly.”

“I asked what was he trying to get, the point across? And she said, ‘I don’t know,’ and he said, his explanation was there would be no consequences, it’s just a piece of cloth that doesn’t mean anything.”

Doesn’t mean anything? The flag is more than just a piece of cloth. It symbolizes the freedom that men and women have fought and died for.

According to Fitsnews.com, the teacher is considered to be a “good” one, but that he is “very liberal.” One source said, “He wears it on his sleeve in the classroom.”

The attorney for the suspended teacher has spoken out on the matter.

Darryl D. Smalls says 12-year teacher Scott Compton was attempting to show his classes that America is an “inspirational idea,” greater than the “material objects that represent it,” during a lesson on symbolism.

“He made only positive comments about America throughout this lesson,” wrote Smalls in an emailed statement to WIS. “The version of events currently circulating is incomplete.”

What do you think? Was this a legitimate lesson or liberalism run amok? It’s really hard in today’s society to teach children basic concepts such as respect when the symbol of our great country is disrespected… don’t you think?
