Despite all their hysteria and hyperventilation, don’t you get the feeling that at least half of Congress doesn’t have the slightest interest in getting to the bottom of all the endemic sexual harassment on Capitol Hill?
Brett Kavanaugh, of course, is a different story. He’s a Republican, which means he can’t count on any of the due-process protections once afforded by the Bill of Rights.
Innocent until proven guilty is no longer “settled law,” you see. In fact, innocent until proven guilty only applies to Democrats. Otherwise, it’s innocent until proven … Republican.
No evidence? So what? Zero corroborating witnesses? Who cares? Kavanaugh is a Republican. Your Honor, the persecution, er prosecution, moves for a directed verdict of guilty!
But I do see a way that Democrats could show their … good faith, if that’s possible.
They could move for immediate release of the names of all the members of Congress who have paid settlements to victims of sexual harassment over the past 20-plus years.
Taxpayers have shelled out $17 million in payouts to victims of Congressional predators since 1995 — we don’t know how much of that is for victims of sexual harassment and how much for other forms of discrimination.
But that $17 million isn’t the only public fund these sanctimonious fiends are dipping into — ex-Rep. John Conyers paid one of his victims out of his own personal House office account. He’s probably not the only one.
You may recall a flurry of publicity about this little-known Congressional hush-money fund about 10 months ago. But the story vanished from the headlines as suddenly as it appeared, which most likely means the obvious: more Democrat perfidy than Republican.
It’s funny, isn’t it, how when #MeToo goes #YouToo against Democrats, whatever the scandal is suddenly gets a good leaving-alone from the alt-left media.
The background is that this secret fund was established in 1995 under the “Congressional Accountability Act,” which set up an unaccountable system in much the same way that the “Affordable Care Act” would later provide unaffordable Obamacare.
Here’s how the Senate’s own system of sexual-harassment resolution works: The victim only has 180 days to step forward, not 36 years, which is how long Kavanaugh’s accuser waited.
You also don’t get to file a public complaint against the salacious solon, it’s called a “request for counseling.” Any settlement is not public record, not subject to being released under the Freedom of Information Act.
Pretty sweet, huh? At least if you’re, say, a Bill Clinton or a Keith Ellison, an Anthony Weiner, a Tom Carper or a Sherrod Brown. A perv Democrat, in other words.
I’m sure some Republicans have also dipped into this slush fund over the years, but let’s be real. If most of the payouts involved victims of GOP lawmakers, the Republicans’ names would have been leaked when word of this line-item first made the news last year.
But the names in this particular Hall of Shame have remained locked up tighter than Barack Obama’s SAT and LSAT scores, or Elizabeth Warren’s employment applications to the law schools at Harvard and Penn. And for the same reason: their release would embarrass some Beautiful People.
The payments are made by the “Office of Compliance,” another euphemism. It should be known as the “Office of Compliant Complainants.” If you’re a complainant, and you’re compliant, and you don’t complain, you get paid off.
Where are all the Democrats demanding the release of all the names of all these hypocritical lawmakers who’ve been touching everything but the third rail? Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand believed the “mattress girl” at Columbia and the UVa-Rolling Stone rape hoaxer, so why doesn’t she want to shame everyone who tapped into the taxpayer-funded slush fund?
Sen. Mazie Hirono, who says all men should shut up — wouldn’t she like to satisfy herself that none of her political mentors committed any of those unspeakable acts that those nine women accused him of?
Sens. Chris Coons, Richard Blumenthal, Sheldon Whitehouse — they don’t believe in due process any more, at least for Republicans. Let’s see how they like their pals being outed.
Here’s how bad it is right now. Yesterday, the Manchester Union Leader ran a local story — “NH state senator says unnamed doctor assaulted her at Dartmouth Fraternity in 1972.”
There was a picture underneath the headline — of Brett Kavanaugh.
