Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade claimed Tuesday that his 12-year-old daughter Zaya knew she was transgender when she was just 3 years old.

“She’s known it for nine years. She’s known since she was three years old,” Mr. Wade told “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts.

“Myself and my family, we love the fact that she doesn’t have to hide who she is,” he said. “My daughter was my first interaction when it comes to having to deal with this conversation. Hopefully, I’m dealing with it the right way — inside our home we see the smile on my daughter’s face, we see the confidence that she’s able to walk around and be herself and that’s when you know you’re doing right.”

Mr. Wade and his wife, actress Gabriella Union, made headlines last week after they announced they were “proud” to support their transgender daughter, who was born a boy by the name Zion.

Mr. Wade talked about the experience in his new documentary, “D. Wade: Life Unexpected,” and he elaborated on his daughter’s journey during a recent appearance on “Ellen.”

“We take our roles and our responsibility as parents very seriously,” he said on “Ellen.” “When our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can. And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”

The celebrity couple garnered a wave of praise for the way they handled their daughter’s coming out, including by TV host Ellen DeGeneres, who called Mr. Wade a “parenting all-star.”
