President Donald Trump, in a speech in Iowa, said he’s going to ask Congress to write some legislation that will bar those coming to America from tapping into taxpayer entitlements for a period of five years.
All hail the Trump.
This is one of those common-sense measures that leaves the average American cheering — and the left reeling. After all, a Democrat without a public dole to offer is largely a Democrat without a voter.
What else can a Democrat offer a newcomer to America — a job? A limited government and message of self-worth? Or, how about this: An anti-President Donald Trump sign to wave?
Right. Democrats are going to oppose this legislation, if and when it comes, and oppose it hard.
But as Trump so very often says: Who gives a flip.
“The time has come for new immigration rules that say … those seeking immigration into our country must be able to support themselves financially and should not use welfare for a period of at least five years,” he said, from Grand Rapids, Iowa.
Specifically, Trump wants to bolster the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, giving federal authorities the ability to deport those coming to this nation who take taxpayer welfare benefits within their first five in-country years. Previous administrations have watered this act; Trump simply wants to underscore it and reignite it.
And you know what that means, don’t you?
Prepare for the rollout from the left of a serious campaign to show just why such endeavor is discriminatory, to slam Trump as racist, and to trot out statistics that show those coming to this country actually don’t take from the taxpayers — but rather, give, give, give.
Well, on that last count, here’s a thought: If that’s true, then Trump’s campaign shouldn’t matter.
It should just roll right off the hardworking immigrants’ shoulders.
If there is no issue with immigrants taking public assistance, then there should be no issue with Trump pressing for a five-year halt to immigrants accessing public assistance. They’re all working; they’re not taking the taxpayer dime.
Nothing to see here. Go home.
The only people who should have a problem with this ban are those who live off the taxpayers — or those who gain from providing taxpayer assistance.
So we’ve come full circle. Democrats, party of No Message, party of Anti-Trump, party of Anti-Republican, only have limited means at their disposal to sway voters to vote Democrat. And one of their key tools of enticement: taxpayer subsidies.
So get ready for the political battle. But on this, Trump already has the will of the American citizens. And with a Republican-dominated Congress about to enter the 2018 elections, it’s going to be easy-peasy; ban the assistance. Chalk up another Trump campaign promise to reel in the spendthrift Congress and cut taxes for Americans — fulfilled.
