(The Center Square) – Overlap and duplication cost taxpayers billions, according to a new report from a Congressional watchdog.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s annual report identified opportunities to save billions of dollars by reducing overlap, duplication and fragmentation across the federal government.
The report outlines 112 measures that Congress and federal agencies could take to save money and improve government services.
“This year’s report provides Congress and federal agencies with new opportunities to save federal dollars, increase revenue, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a wide range of federal programs,” said Gene Dodaro, comptroller general and head of the GAO. “By addressing this year’s pointed list, as well as open recommendations to both agencies and Congress from GAO’s past work, the federal government could potentially save tens of billions of dollars.”
Among the suggestions: The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency could potentially save its federal customers hundreds of millions of dollars through reduced prices by making sure its working capital fund cash balance is within its operating range. Another one: Improving sole proprietor tax compliance could increase revenue by hundreds of millions of dollars per year.
Earlier this year, the GAO, which serves as the research arm of Congress, estimated annual fraud losses cost taxpayers between $233 billion and $521 billion annually, according to a report published last month.

Why is it never mentioned that the treasonous Democrat Party’s 11 Million imported illegal immigrants support cost the U.S. taxpayers $33,000,000,000.00
(33 BILLION a year)
A good analogy of how things get worse when the government gets involved is Obamacare, that UNAFORDABLE “Affordable Care act” where the price of healthcare about tripled since its inception. One proffering was to force doctors to create healthcare data bases that could be shared with other doctors and eliminate duplicity in treatments and save costs. The Doctors are now so overwhelmed in record keeping they have only 20% of their day left to actual treatment of patients, and need to hire additional nurses to fill in the void thereby tripling the expenses, all the while the doctors are government limited on how much they will be reimbursed financially, thereby discouraging others to ever go into that profession, limiting the amount of doctors available, thereby raising up the cost of healthcare, thereby fulfilling Ronald Reagan’s defined most terrifying words; ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”
OF COURSE.. TO the govt, having at LEAST one duplicate, is good, HAVING MULTIPLE is great.
Congress is going to look at cutting back on duplicating services / overlap in the Federal Government???? That is never going to happen! The deep state is too, too corrupt!
Never will happen because when you duplicate the government service, you duplicate the ability for the politicians to skim their off the top. Joe’s 10% becomes 20% with the stroke of a pen.
That’s like asking the FOX, to find out who got into the hen house and ate the chickens.

As Steve Martin would say: “Nah!”
They could have issued the same basic report every year since Eisenhower left office.
When has the government done anything to decrease exposed waste of taxpayers hard earned monies? If Congress got a pay cut at every tax increase they might be a whole lot more frugal.
