Moscow, Apr 5 (EFE).- Russia’s president Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a law that enables him to run in two more presidential elections and remain in power until 2036.
Putin signed the bill after the Duma (lower house of parliament) and the Federation Council (upper house) had formally approved it.
The law implements an amendment to the constitution approved in a referendum on July 1 that allows the Kremlin chief, who has been in power since 2000, to stand for reelection in 2024 and 2030.
The bill is the latest blow to the country’s opposition, after its leader and prominent Putin critic, Alexei Navalny, was jailed for three years in February. EFE
