(The Center Square) – Spending on food stamps has increased by $53.5 billion – an 89% increase – in the two pandemic years. By comparison, that’s how much the entire program cost in 2009 during the Great Recession.
Spending on the U.S. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program grew 88.5% from $60.3 billion in 2019 to $113.8 billion in 2021. Spending on the SNAP program had previously peaked at $79.8 billion in 2013 before declining for the next six years.
The average monthly benefit per person increased 68%, from $129.83 per person to $217.88 per person, from 2019 to 2021, according to figures from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.
The federal program helps supplement the food budget of people who qualify. SNAP provides benefits to eligible low-income people through an Electronic Benefits Transfer card that can be used at stores to buy food.
Emergency orders are helping some states collect more federal help. For example, by having a COVID-19 state of emergency in place, “Connecticut has received and distributed an additional $748 million of emergency SNAP benefits,” Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said in a June 28 executive order. “The continued receipt of these funds is vital to offsetting the effects of food insecurity in Connecticut during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
About 35.7 million people nationwide used SNAP benefits in 2019, the lowest number since 2013. Participation in the program increased to 39.9 million in 2020 before climbing to 41.6 million in 2021, according to USDA documents.
More people are expected to participate in SNAP in the coming years.
For 2023, the USDA estimated participation would increase to an average level of 43.5 million participants per month, up from 42.3 million in 2022.
“This post-recession uptick in SNAP is consistent with participation trends following past economic crisis,” USDA officials noted in the agency’s 2023 budget. “While participation is expected to increase, the overall cost of the program is expected to decrease.”
The lower costs are expected to come from the expiration of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and the expiration of a 15% benefit increase from the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021 and the American Rescue Plan at the end of fiscal year 2021, according to the budget.
The emergency authorization payments that were provided through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and other program waivers are expected to continue for the length of the Public Health Emergency, likely through the majority of 2022, according to the budget.
Hunger is indeed a great motivator, and if God did not want us to be motived, he would not have given us hunger. The more motivated and self-governing people can get, the less able are they to be Democrat manipulated to vote with their stomachs instead of their minds and their strength. Most of those increases in food stamps are being devoured by the horde of Joe’s Millions of illegal locusts who crossed our borders with the intent not to breathe free as lady Liberty states, and as our mind manipulating media would have you believe, but to EAT free and consume food designed for legal citizens under duress, not alien people with no education on American liberty, concepts of fair play, whose first act is to break our immigration laws which define them as criminals. Maybe the Fauci estate should be fined all those dollars the taxpayers had to shell out to feed all the fools that quit their jobs, locked themselves down and sucked up to the hind teat of government. Great challenges make for great nations. Great surrenderings make for weak malleable children-in-adult body citizens, unfit to bear the benefits or responsibility of maintaining a Self-governing nation that soon becomes ungovernable when the crime families who create the mess of entitlement finally take over and rule via executive orders, not govern in creative cooperation.
“…Pandemic Triggers 89% Increase in U.S. Food Stamp Spending….” With democrat President Joe Biden and America’s Open Borders policy could we expect anything else. Remember democrat Former President Barack H. Obams Statement , ” America is, and always will be a land of Immigrants. ” OBama, in other words Said to, America’s Middle Class, Suck it up!
AND ONE WONDERS, how many of those 2+ MILLION illegal invaders, ARE GETTING Wic, EBT and welfare?
AND HOW Many of those begging for food stamps, have a new car in the drive way, have at least 2 big screen tvs at home and a cellphone in the hands of everyone living in their home???
