James Comey has finally come out of the closet.

The once-upon-a-time registered Republican — the guy who told Congress in July of 2016 that he had “been a registered Republican for most of my adult life” but am “not registered any longer” — has finally shed his so-called conservative coating and called for all Americans of conscience to vote Democrat this November.

As if anybody’s listening to him.

As if his praise and support of the left is some sort of surprise.

Truly, Comey’s been a bit of a Republican-In-Name-Only anyhow.

He was a deputy attorney general under George W. Bush’s administration, then became director of the FBI for Barack Obama. Along the way, he donated to the likes of John McCain for president and Mitt Romney for president — not exactly solid conservative credentials.

Now?

Now he’s found the Constitution.

“This Republican Congress,” Comey tweeted, “has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that ‘Ambition must … counteract ambition.’ All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us.”

That follows another tweet he put out Monday in the wake of President Donald Trump’s meeting in Helsinki with Vladimir Putin.

“This was the day,” he wrote, “an American president stood on foreign soil next to a murderous lying thug and refused to back his own country. Patriots need to stand up and reject the behavior of this president.”

This, from the guy who sparked headlines like this, from The Hill: “FBI a house of lies in Comey era.”

Or this, again from The Hill: “Admit it, James Comey: You’ve been lying all along.”

Or this, from the website LyinComey.com — oh wait, that says it all right there, now doesn’t it?

Yet now Comey wants to make a dramatic splash with his somber, sober, carefully considered call for voters to sway Democrat this November?

Sorry, but that boy scout image has long left the room.

Politically speaking, Comey reinvents himself more times than Madonna. He dances more than Elton John’s candle in the wind.

He’s Republican, not Republican, not Democrat but vote Democrat, somewhere in the land of independent — perhaps. But he wants everyone to now vote Democrat. It’s confusing, to say the least.

Pick a side, please. Pick a principle or two, for crying out loud.

And yet, even the most casual of political watchers can see he already has. With Comey, it’s all about taking out of Trump and Trump supporters.

Comey doesn’t want voters to vote Democrat so much as he wants voters to oppose Trump any which way they can. Now if he could just be honest and stop masking his anti-Trumpism as patriotism and Founding Father principle.
