border patrol

This was supposed to be an election year focused on the economy and the terrible job Barack Obama and the Democrats are doing regarding it. Well, it still is, but there is another issue in the mix: illegal immigration. On one hand, it is yet another example of Obama being in over his head and not putting the interests of America first. On the other, the residents of Arizona have had to take matters into their own hands in order to protect themselves. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has risen significantly in the polls since taking action against illegal immigration and the Mexican drug cartels. This has left Sen. John McCain in the hot seat since he had sponsored the bill that would have granted amnesty to illegal aliens. Now, he’s talking tougher, but still distancing himself from Brewer’s positions.

In the latest on the Arizona illegal immigration battles, Brewer was in the news over the weekend for saying, “I believe today, under the circumstances that we’re facing, that the majority of the illegal trespassers that are coming into the state of Arizona are under the direction and control of organized drug cartels and they are bringing drugs in.”

Tying illegal immigration to the drug cartels in such a way, brought knee-jerk reaction from the media and liberals, who were “stunned” by Brewer’s comments. As FoxNews.com reports, “Sen. Jesus Ramon Valdes, a member of the Mexican Senate’s northern border affairs commission, called Brewer’s comments racist and irresponsible.” Of course! Any time someone speaks out against illegal immigration, some liberal will call that person a racist.

Brewer followed up her claim by issuing a press release stating, “The simple truth is that the majority of human smuggling in our state is under the direction of the drug cartels, which are by definition smuggling drugs.”

“It is common knowledge that Mexican drug cartels have merged human smuggling with drug trafficking. For example, the Los Angeles Times on March 23, 2009 reported, ‘The business of smuggling humans across the Mexican border has been brisk, with many thousands coming across every year. But smugglers affiliated with the drug cartels have taken the enterprise to a new level – and made it more violent – by commandeering much of the operation from independent coyotes, according to these officials and recent congressional testimonies.’ This article and many federal government reports have drawn the same conclusions.

“The human rights violations that have taken place victimizing immigrants and their families are abhorrent. Border crossers are used by drug cartels as commodities. Mexican drug cartels have merged human smugglers who use their expertise in gathering intelligence on border patrols, logistics and communication devices to get around even tighter controls. U.S. border officials have stated that traffickers are gaining control of much of the illegal passage of immigrants from Mexico to the United States.”

McCain, however disagrees with Brewer’s comments.

McCain was right to point out all the crazy activities that are going on in Arizona, but it’s time for him to stop being such a politician and start being a leader. When parts of Arizona are basically off limits and law enforcement officials are being threatened and target by Mexican drug lords, then we are way past the point of simple rhetoric. The job of the federal government is the defense of our country! Obama needs to do it NOW! Arizona officials are taking matters into their own hands, not because they want to, but because they have to.
