Ok, the election is over, and if you’re like me, the final results were a punch in the gut. In fact, it’s been hard for me to write about practically anything while I sit in a stunned state of “what just happened?” Enough! It’s time to move on, and it’s time to pick up the pieces and build a conservative machine that can win. What we don’t need to do is bash the very man who gave his heart and soul to trying to change the course of this country.
It’s really quite sad. Following his election defeat, Mitt Romney was quiet. He congratulated Barack Obama, and he let the dust settle. Only after more than a week, did he host a conference call with major donors to discuss the election. Now his comments during that call are making news, and Republican leaders are coming out and bashing him.

Ok… let’s get this straight. Romney said that one of the reasons Obama won was because he used the same old Democrat playbook. This is ABSOLUTELY TRUE! Name me one presidential election where the Democrat didn’t break the electorate down into interest groups and promise them one thing or another. Romney was absolutely right when he said that Obama’s strategy was to promise “big gifts” to women, young people, and minorities.
But his comments have been met with “outrage.” Give me a break! Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was one of the first to make news in speaking out against Romney’s comments. As reported in the Boston Globe, Jindal (who is considered a “rising star” in GOP circles) said Romney’s comments were “absolutely wrong.”
“I think that’s absolutely wrong,” Jindal said later Wednesday at a news conference in Las Vegas at a meeting of the Republican Governors Association. “We have got to stop dividing the American voters. We need to go after 100 percent of the votes, not 53 percent.”
Jindal’s reference to 53 percent was a criticism of Romney’s secretly recorded statement at a Florida fund-raiser in May that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government assistance and do not take personal responsibility for their lives.
The Louisiana governor, an Indian-American who is considered a potential presidential candidate in 2016, said that Republicans “need to continue to show how our policies help every voter out there achieve the American Dream, which is to be in the middle class, which is to be able to give their children an opportunity to be able to get a great education.”
Now, granted, Jindal did say that we need to stop dividing American voters. We do. But what Romney said was that Obama’s strategy WAS TO DIVIDE them. It’s a completely accurate account of what happened.
New Mexico Gov. Susan Martinez has jumped on the bandwagon too. In an interview with Politico.com, Martinez was talking about the Republican party and minority voters:
She expressed disdain for Romney’s claim this week on a conference call that President Barack Obama won reelection because he offered “gifts” to minorities and younger voters.
“That unfortunately is what sets us back as a partyn — our comments that are not thought through carefully,” she said…
…”Republicans need to stop making assumptions,” she added, “and they need to start talking to younger people, people of color, and ask them — not talk to them — ask them, ‘What is it that we can do better? How do we earn your vote? How do we earn the ability for you to see that we can be the party that will make your life better and that of your children?’ But we can’t be the ones that come and tell them how things are going to be and how we have all the solutions.”
Oh my gosh! I don’t even know where to begin! Is this the “new direction” of the Republican Party? Are we destined to battle the Democrats to see if we can be the party that “will make your life better and that of your children?” If that is the new Republican strategy, I don’t want any part of it.
Here’s a message to all those Republican hopefuls out there. Get a clue!
A friend of mine asked me why Romney lost. There are a TON of reasons, but one that I told her was that Romney needed to hit Obama harder on the issues. But is it any wonder that he didn’t? Whenever a Republican goes out and speaks the truth about America, not only does he or she get blasted by the media, he or she gets blasted by other Republicans. Pathetic!
If we choose to adopt a strategy of “here is what government can do for you,” then we will lose… FOREVER. Democrats will always promise more. Democrats will always spend more. It’s a stupid, losing strategy.
Going forward, we must remind people of what made America great to begin with. People with bold ideas, taking huge chances… all in pursuit of the American Dream. That dream is alive and well. We must remind people of what lies inside them… not what lies in Washington, DC. People must be reminded that it is government that is holding them back. Imagine what they could accomplish… imagine what they could become… imagine what they can pass along to their children… if government got out of the way.
Want a better job? Want a better life? Want a society that respects the accomplishments of individuals so that we all grow as a nation? Then vote for the party and candidates that will unleash the true American spirit. The more we rely on government, the more we lose part of our soul.
I recently told another friend that there has not been one single government housing project that was ever built that was run-down and neglected from the beginning. They all started out shiny and new. However, if you give someone something for nothing, they will treat it like nothing. That’s just a fact.
Over decades, people have been lulled by the left-wing promise of government taking care of them, and if Republicans adopt a “Democrat light” approach, we will lose. We have to change the paradigm. We have to restore hope. We have to ignite the fire. And no, we can’t promise “big gifts” like Obama and the Democrats do, and shame on all the Republicans who think we should.
