The Obama administration announced on Wednesday that the president has decided not to attend the funeral of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The last time a Supreme Court justice died while sitting on the court, President George W. Bush not only attended the funeral, but he gave a eulogy as well. Perhaps Obama has a tee-time he just can’t miss.
The staff at Hannity.com reports that White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said that neither Barack Obama nor Michelle Obama will attend the funeral.
Instead, the president and first lady Michelle Obama will pay their respects to Scalia on Friday, when the Justice’s body lies in repose in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court building. The White House added that Vice President Joe Biden will attend Saturday’s funeral at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
The Hannity.com article also notes some of the other funerals that Obama has skipped during his presidency such as those of Margaret Thatcher, Chris Kyle, Major General Harold Greene, and Obama’s aunt Zeinuti Onyango.
Obama’s spokesman can’t even say the words “Obama will not be at the funeral.” Is it too embarassing for him? Earnest can say what Obama is doing on Friday, but won’t say what he’s not doing on Saturday. Earnest won’t even rule out that Obama will be golfing in this follow-up clip:
So much for showing respect. Politico.com reports that even MSNBC host Chris Hayes thought it was ridiculous for Obama to skip the funeral, tweeting, “Some amazing advice my mom gave me once: ‘If you’re wondering whether you should go to the funeral, you should go to the funeral.'”
I’m sure Obama will be at the next funeral for a conservative Supreme Court justice. Or maybe he’ll attend a funeral for a fallen police officer killed in a hate crime. Or maybe he’ll show up to a funeral for Americans killed by Islamic terrorists. Oh wait… it’s Barack Obama. Instead, he’ll be doing things like meeting with race-baiters like DeRay Mckesson, Al Sharpton, and Loretta Lynch.
