President Joe Biden and others in American politics paid tribute to President Jimmy Carter following his death on Dec. 29.
Carter, the longest-lived American president in history, turned 100 years old in October, though he was already in hospice care at the time. He was diagnosed with melanoma in 2015, and the cancer metastasized to his liver and brain and he long outlived the prognosis.
In a statement, the Carter family said that the Navy veteran, former Georgia governor, and former president “died peacefully … surrounded by his family.”
Reactions from lawmakers and U.S. officials quickly came in following the news.
“Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,” Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement.
“Over six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend,” the Bidens wrote. “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.”
“He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism,” the First Couple said, confirming that Biden had ordered a state funeral for Carter.
President-elect Donald Trump, who had well-known political disagreements with Carter, also paid tribute to the former president.
“I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History.
“The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”
Trump said he and his wife, Melania, were “thinking warmly” of Carter’s family and urged others to keep the Carters “in their hearts and prayers.”
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who led House Democrats for 20 years, also weighed in.
“Today, our nation and our world has lost a leader who embodied dignity and decency, grace and goodness,” Pelosi said in a post on X.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was also laudatory of the former president.
“President Carter’s story was one of humble beginnings, and his life is a testament to the boundless opportunities available in this great nation,” Johnson said in a statement.
“Because of his work in brokering the Camp David Accords and his advocacy with Habitat for Humanity, the world is a more peaceful place, and more Americans have a place to call home,” Johnson said. “No one can deny that President Carter led an extraordinary life of service to his country. May he rest in peace.”
Incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) called Carter “a dedicated public servant and a man of faith.”
“President Carter dedicated his life to serving the people of Georgia and our great country—as a naval officer, a governor, and as the 39th President of the United States,” Thune said in a statement.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who will lead Democrats in the incoming Congress, said Carter “personified the true meaning of leadership through service, through compassion, and through integrity.”
“May his memory be a blessing and an enduring reminder of what it means to truly serve,” Schumer said in an official statement.
Carter, as both the former governor of the Peach State and the former president, will be honored by public observances both in Washington, D.C. and Georgia, the Carter Center said.
That will likely include a state funeral in Washington, which could see Carter’s body taken in a procession down Pennsylvania Avenue before being laid in state at the Capitol Rotunda. Historically, former presidents’ funerals have been held at the National Cathedral in the capital.
Biden has said in the past that Carter asked him to deliver his eulogy when the time came.
According to the Carter Center, Carter’s body will ultimately be interred in Plains, Georgia.

Carter may have done good humanitarian work outside of the Presidency, but as President, he was nothing but a socialist, who perpetrated high inflation on the American people. As a result, Carter made the American people suffer.
Better a President who is completely correct, competent, and caring while in office and mediocre after in retirement, than being mediocre while in office, and who cares what he does or how competent he is AFTER in retirement so long as he does not take bribes, get rich off the people using his former office like CLintons, Obamas and Bidens to get the enrichements of office that belong not to himself but the American people. His lost opportunity to get rid of the Mullahs in Iran by paying a little back then in lives and treasure has cost the USA hundreds of billions in Treasure and American blood that need not have been spilled. If an Iranian nuke goes off in a major American city you can thank Mr. Nice guy who finished last among PResidents until BIden showed up. Jimmy Carter,,,,Last in war, First in retirement benefits gleaned from the American taxpayer, and first in the hearts of the grateful Iranian leadership.
when thinking about Joe Biden, the word, SYCOPHANT, COMES TO MIND.
At least he still CARED for america.. Unlike the shell of a man still holding the presidency!
Americans married Carter in the haste of the aftermath of Nixon, and have repented for the past 43 years he milked us in 6 figure retirement payments having only served 4 failed years. Had he really cared for America he would have relied upon God and his own peanut farm retirement plan, and prayed for forgiveness for the American lives and treasure his failed opportunites cost us that should have rid us of the Iranian problem 43 years ago of Iranian terrorism. I’ll bet my shorts Trump bit his tongue hard trying to say nice things about a good man but bad President who usually finished last. His unchristian support of abortion probably originated from the Hormones telemeres, and body part harvested from aborted children that were used to sustain his failing life force that he creepily kept alive for 100 years. I am convinces there is a club of special high level Politicians that have access to this kind of research that average Americans are not allowed access to, like over-aged Bush Senior, Bob Dole, Feinstein, and god knows how long they can keep that walking corpse Pelosi kicking ansd screaming????
Then Senator Joe Biden endorsed Jimmy Carter when he was A Canidate For President-Can You say, SYCOPHANT.?

Carter was the living example of the Famous Leo Derocher quote that “Nice guys finish last” the personification of “Evil prevailing when good men do nothing” and could have finished the Iranian Problem but had not the guts or the grist to get the job done right. Nice guys may succeed in soap operas, but Carter finished last as President, until Biden dethroned him. Jimmy as Commander in Chief was so frightened he would lose his place in heaven if he might have to order the killing of another human being, even though they the Iranian Mullahs were in the act of trying to kill us, that the evil prevailed because the good man did nothing, and when he did it blew up our people in the desert. If we get Iranian nuked 43 years later you can thank the Carter failure. Russians gave them the nuclear plants,, Carter gave us the Mullahs,,,,Obama gave the Iranians the plane loads of money and captured missile technology. We could have paid a little back then to fix it, but will pay dearly now when it all blows up in our faces. The cost to America in blood and treasure of his inaction in Iran over the years adds up almost to what we wasted paying him 43 years of full Presidential retirement pay, Secret Service Protection, for the privilege of his 4 lost years of Presidential incompetency, beginning the era of soaring gas prices due to yeilding to middle east country petroleum blackmailing that made hostages of our enitre nation !!!
