On Tuesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Special Agent Jaime Zapata was killed while traveling from Mexico City to Monterrey. Drug dealers are suspected in the murder, and it is believed that the shooters knew they were firing upon a diplomatic vehicle. How much longer does this have to go on before the Obama administration gets serious? Not only is there a drug war at our doorsteps, these thugs are bringing it into the United States. How many more times will buildings on U.S. soil be riddled with bullets before our government actually does something?

As reported by Fox News:

Zapata, who joined ICE in 2006, was on assignment in Mexico City from his post in Laredo, Texas, where he had been a member of the Human Smuggling and Trafficking Unit as well as the Border Enforcement Security Task Force. The two agents were traveling between Mexico City and Monterrey in a car that displayed diplomatic plates.

U.S. officials say the gunmen knew they were attacking law enforcement officers. A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press the impression comes from comments attackers made before they opened fire on the agents.

And what is our distinguished Homeland Security secretary doing about this? Janet Napolitano along with Attorney General Eric Holder are creating a joint task force. Wow, that’s helpful. I have an idea. How about when these drug traffickers are crossing the border (as we know they do all the time), U.S. officials drop a bomb on their vehicles! Do you think that might send a message? Or how about actually taking the fight to them? This is crazy.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) called the attack a “game changer.” In his press release, McCaul said:

“This was an intentional ambush against two United States federal agents, which I view as an attack against the United States. Special Agent Jaime Zapata, who was killed, and a fellow agent who survived, were pursued by numerous cartel members and run off the road while driving a US government vehicle with diplomat license plates. When the agents identified themselves as American diplomats, the cartel members responded by opening fire on the officers. US law enforcement has operated in Mexico for more than two decades without threat of violence from drug cartels. This tragic event is a game changer. The United States will not tolerate acts of violence against its citizens or law enforcement and I believe we must respond forcefully. This should be a long overdue wakeup call for the Obama administration that there is a war on our nation’s doorstep.”

As reported in the Brownsville Herald, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said that over 140 Americans have been killed in just the past two years from Mexican drug violence.

Cornyn said the attack on the agents shows that whatever plan the Obama Administration has in place to help Mexico combat violence is not working.

“The momentum seems to be mainly in the direction of the cartels and we need to turn that around,” Cornyn said. “It is so important that we have a plan from President Obama’s administration for what we need to be doing different, rather than just doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.”

Zapata was only 32 years old. If Obama and his administration were serious, then in the next day, there should be some very visible sign demonstrated (a few buildings blown up, perhaps) to show that drug dealers do not attack U.S. officials. The violence is escalating. The incursions into U.S soil are becoming more frequent. And the death toll mounts. It sure sounds like Obama, Napolitano, and company need to get a clue.
