What an interesting turn of events. It appears that the Democrats, at least those in power, are sensitive to public outrage and political fallout. After stripping any reference to God from the party’s 2012 platform and striking language reaffirming Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Democrats put the language back in. Here’s how it all went down…
As I reported on Wednesday, the Democrats completed their work on the 2012 platform, and the document removed references to God which were contained in previous Democrat platforms. They also removed language defining Jerusalem as the capital of Israel — language that was contained in the previous platform. The reaction to these omissions was intense.
GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said, “I think it’s rather peculiar. It’s not in keeping with our founding documents, our founding vision, but I guess you’d have to ask the Obama administration why they purged all this language from their platform.”
In an interview with Fox News, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, “I think their having removed purposefully God from their platform suggests a party which is increasingly out of touch with the mainstream of American people. … I think this party is veering further and further away into an extreme wing that Americans don’t recognize.”
According to a report at Politico.com, the Obama campaign stated that it “had seen the language prior to the convention.” So, removing God and Jerusalem as A-OK with Barack Obama. However, Politico.com then added that the campaign backtracked on those comments and stated that Obama “did not learn of the issue until Wednesday morning, when he became aware of seeing news coverage of the issue.”
It appears that the news coverage really made a difference, and so Obama and his team scrambled to ram through a change in the platform’s language. Here is the vote as it happened:
There is so much wrong with this video, that I don’t even know where to start. First, it’s outrageous that these two planks were altered in the first place. Then, Obama and his guys didn’t have the guts to stand up and defend the actions… they backpedaled. Then, as can be seen in the video, clearly there are not two-thirds in favor of the change, so what does that say about the Democrat delegates in general?
Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz tried to defend the convention’s actions, but even CNN’s Anderson Cooper thought she was nuts.
Cooper is right. Wasserman-Schultz may say there is no discord, but she is the one in the “alternate universe.” Clearly the omission of something that was already there in the previous platform is not a “technical oversight.”
The Democrats can keep talking, but the more they do, the more they show that they are out of touch with real Americans and the values that make America great.
