WASHINGTON (UPI) — President Barack Obama telephoned congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump early Wednesday on his election victory, and invited him to the White House.

“The president also called Secretary [Hillary] Clinton and expressed admiration for the strong campaign she waged throughout the country,” a White House statement said.

In the phone call, Obama invited Trump to the White House on Thursday, the statement adding that “ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the president identified at the beginning of the year and a meeting with the president-elect is the next step.”

Obama is expected to make a statement Wednesday on the election, including “what steps we can take as a country to come together after this hard-fought election season,” the White House said.
