Is this the best Barack Obama can offer? In his latest campaign ad, is he talking about the economy? No. Is he talking about jobs? No way. Is he talking about foreign policy? Not a chance. No… the president of the United States is going after challenger Mitt Romney by enlisting the help of Big Bird. And Sesame Street is not too happy about it.

Barack Obama’s latest “brilliant” strategy is to try to capitalize on Mitt Romney’s statement at the first presidential debate that he would shut down PBS. According to Romney, there’s no reason why the government should be paying for a media network. (And he’s right!) Obama must feel this is a travesty of justice. Just look at this ad:

What’s amazing is that it starts right off with, “I’m Barack Obama, and I approved this message.” Oh really? This is your campaign in action? I don’t think that Big Bird fans around the country will be happy knowing that Obama’s campaign is calling Big Bird “evil” and a “menace” to our economy.

The best thing about the video is it includes Romney’s actual statement about closing the door on PBS. Way to go, Romney!

The buzz is causing anger on Sesame Street as well. As reported in the New York Post, the Sesame Workshop — the PBS-affiliated non-profit behind Sesame Street — said in a statement, “We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.”

“Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns,” said the statement.

An Obama campaign official said that the campaign “received and will review their concerns.”

The Romney campaign has fired back as well, noting the misguided efforts of Obama to talk about anything other than the issues.

Kevin Madden, a senior Romney adviser, told reporters on board the candidate’s plane Tuesday the campaign isn’t taking the Obama’s latest offensive seriously.

“Right now, you’ve got 23 million Americans struggling to find work. You’ve got household incomes going down. You’ve got a federal deficit, federal debt that’s over 16 trillion dollars,” Madden said. “I find it troubling that the president’s message, the president’s focus 28 days out from Election Day is Big Bird.”

The economy, the debt, the deficit, foreign affairs, government spending… all are serious issues, but Barack Obama spends campaign money on Big Bird. Is it just me, or is their something fowl in the air? (Sorry… had to write that!)
