Let’s see… we have high unemployment, a national debt that’s out of control, gas prices are going through the roof, and an administration that wants to continue spending, spending, and spending. With all of this going on, what does Barack Obama consider his “priority”? Simple… it’s granting amnesty to illegal aliens. Yes, the issue is back, and so is Obama’s arrogant attitude. In true form, Obama mocked in his immigration speech on Monday, saying, “Maybe they’ll need a moat. Maybe they’ll want alligators in the moat.”
It seems odd that Obama would pick now to address an issue that has already been debated and already been settled in the minds of the American people. Is he just driven by visions of millions of more votes? Perhaps he wants to go down in history as the president who caused the next great flood of illegal aliens, because as soon as America grants amnesty to the millions of illegal aliens who are already here, then millions more will come.
Obama traveled to El Paso on Monday to deliver the speech. As a proud Texas resident, I’ve been to El Paso many times, but for those of you who are not familiar with the town, it’s the one where gunfire hit the city hall building back in June from cross-border drug activity. Interesting that Obama would choose such a location to tout his “successes” with border security.
So we put the agents here. Then they wanted a fence. Well, the fence is — The fence is now basically complete.
Then we’ve gone further. We tripled the number of intelligence analysts working at the border. I’ve deployed unmanned aerial vehicles to patrol the skies from Texas to California. We have forged a partnership with Mexico to fight the transnational criminal organizations that have affected both of our countries. (Applause.) And for the first time — for the first time we’re screening 100 percent of southbound rail shipments to seize guns and money going south even as we go after drugs that are coming north.
So, here’s the point. I want everybody to listen carefully to this. We have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement. All the stuff they asked for, we’ve done. But even though we’ve answered these concerns, I’ve got to say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us one more time.
I don’t even know where to start. First of all, I really have to wonder about the crowd that Obama assembled for this speech. When he talked about the fence, there was shouts of “Boo!” from the audience. One audience member yelled, “Tear it down!” When Obama said Republicans would “move the goal posts,” an audience member shouted, “They’re racist!”
By the way, for these lines, I’m not quoting from a news report. Instead, I’m using the transcript of the speech as provided on the White House web site.
Did Obama correct this person? Did he say that that type of rhetoric is inflammatory and has no place in our discourse and debate? Nope. He just went right on talking.
Obama’s speeches are also glowing with contradictions and ridiculous statements. This one is no exception. He notes that Google, Yahoo, and eBay were founded by immigrants. (Where they illegal? Just wondering.) Then he says, “So we don’t want the next Intel or the next Google to be created in China or India. We want those companies and jobs to take root here.” So, does this mean that only new immigrants can start companies in America? What about a good, old second, third, fourth, or fifth generation American?
Obama also added, “We’re here at the border because we also recognize that being a nation of laws goes hand in hand with being a nation of immigrants. This, too, is our heritage. This, too, is important. And the truth is, we’ve often wrestled with the politics of who is and who isn’t allowed to come into this country.” Obama is purposely ignoring our immigration laws! Just a few weeks ago, I reported on how word is being handed down to NOT arrest illegal aliens. So much for the rule of law.
As far as Americans “wrestling with the politics of who is and who isn’t allowed to come into this country,” I think will all know who should and should not be here. We have a whole set of laws that spell it out. It is CLEAR. It is not something to wrestle with. The problem for Obama and his team is that the laws conflict with what he wants to do. So he chooses to ignore them.
The speech did not sit well at all with several key Republicans who actually know what’s going on in a border state. As noted in the story on Fox News, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) added this gem which I borrowed for my headline:
“It is ironic that President Obama would travel so close to the border and still be so far from reality. It is clear President Obama is in full campaign mode, but his words do not match his record. He continues to ignore the facts.”
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) added:
Mexican cartels have increased their presence inside the U.S., the data on spillover crime and violence is “underreported” and that between 70 and 90 percent of Texas’ 1,200-mile border with Mexico is still not under operational control.
“Before we start talking about reforming our immigration policy we need to prioritize our national security and gain operational control of the border,” he said in a statement. “Despite the president’s rhetoric that he has gone ‘above and beyond’ to secure the border, this mission is not accomplished.”
Rather than talking about moats and alligators, perhaps Obama should take a good, close look at what’s going on along the border. Perhaps rather than ignoring a shout of “they’re racist,” Obama should consider that caring about the safety and securing of the American people is not racist. Caring about the rule of law is not racist.
If all men (and women) are created equal, then we are all capable of following the laws of the land… right?
