Sen. John McCain, one of the leading pro-amnesty legislators in Washington, has offered praise to the Republicans in the House of Representatives. Why? Because, like the Senate, GOP Republicans are now beginning to cave in as well. McCain welcomes the GOP plan to grant legal status to illegal aliens and thanked House Speaker John Boehner for “getting control” of his colleagues.

As reported in the Washington Post, McCain said that “House Republicans wouldn’t have been able to release the outlines of an immigration reform plan if House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) hadn’t seized control of his colleagues.”

The Republican senator, who helped write the Senate’s immigration measure passed last year, made his comments moments after House Republicans said for the first time that they would be open to allowing the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants to live and work legally in the United States, though they did not support a “special path” for them to achieve citizenship.

“Right now I’m just happy that apparently they’re going to move on an issue that they have not for a long time,” McCain told reporters on Capitol Hill. “And if Boehner hadn’t gotten control of his conference this wouldn’t have happened. So, maybe there’s a silver lining in the shutdown.”

For your reference, here are the House GOP’s “Principles for Immigration Reform.

What’s comical is that the first entry after the preamble is a section titled “Border Security and Interior Enforcement Must Come First.” How long have we heard that one? Does anyone really take it seriously any more? If 11 million people who are here illegally are suddenly made legal, what do you think others back home are going to think? Hmmm… come here illegally, but stay legally. Not a bad deal, eh?

The Hill continued the McCain coverage, quoting the senator as saying, “anyone slamming the House GOP principles right out of the gate isn’t serious about getting legislation passed this year.”

What does “this year” have to do with anything? Is that our only guiding principle? The so-called “get things done” approach. It seems like people in Washington are happy as long as they are passing bills. Whether the bills are good or not truly doesn’t matter to them.

“Right now I’m just happy that apparently they’re going to move on an issue that they have not for a long time,” he added.

McCain said the 16-day government shutdown that sent the Republican Party’s approval rating plummeting might have had a silver lining because it helped the Speaker, Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), regain control of the House GOP conference.

“If Boehner had not gotten control of his conference, this wouldn’t have happened. Maybe there was a silver lining in the shutdown,” he said.

Hmmm… maybe the silver lining in the government shutdown was the fact that the American people got to hear even more about the failing of Obamacare and that the law is at it’s lowest popularity ever. To say that the silver lining is the fact that we will pass amnesty legislation just shows how out of touch legislators like McCain have become.
