An active duty Marine Corps lieutenant colonel was relieved of his duties Friday after publicly demanding leadership take accountability for the deadly disaster in Afghanistan.
Lt. Col Stuart Scheller called out Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and others for not ‘raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, “We messed this up.”‘
‘The reason people are so upset on social media right now is not because the Marine on the battlefield let someone down,’ Scheller said in a nearly five-minute video posted on Facebook and LinkedIn.

My father was a sailor – Aviation Chief Ordnanceman’s mate — on the Hornet CV-8 from about six months before Pearl Harbor until her last day. He had fought fires with his division mates throughout the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, except for a short time that he sent the rest of the guys away so he could use some timbers to secure an unexploded bomb that had penetrated six decks from a Japanese Val Divebomber that had crashed next to the Island. The bomb was rolling around in a compartment, smacking against the bulkheads.
For his actions, he was awarded the Navy Cross.
A decade after he died long after a 29-year Navy career, I came across a website that listed Thirty-five enlisted, officers, and aircrew who had been awarded the Navy Cross for their actions in that furious 2-day battle. Only Five men had survived to receive their awards. I finally understood why he never talked about the award nor his actions. He talked about the guys he’d served with, just as you have.
Plainly, when the so-called leaders commit cowardice and even TREASON against the soldiers they command, and the Nation they swore to serve, it can take extraordinary courage to stand up and risk ruin by Calling them to account. God be with you and those dear to you.
