El Paso Police on Saturday arrested the alleged driver in a hit-and-run accident that caused the death of an Eastwood Heights Elementary School teacher.
Joel Velazquez, 24, was charged with Accident Involving Death and was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond of $150,000.
Velazquez allegedly ran a red light and hit killed Amanda “Mandy” Weyant Ferguson, 28.

The school teacher was crossing at a crosswalk at Mesa Street and Cincinnati Avenue at about 1:45 a.m. when she was struck by a red 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier, El Paso Police Department officials said.
Weyant died at the scene.
Police found the Cavalier abandoned in the 1300 block of Cincinnati, officials said. The vehicle was found about a mile from where Weyant was killed.
