BALTIMORE (AP) — As friends of Freddie Gray learned of the acquittal of a police officer in Gray’s death this week, they were also mourning the more recent loss of another friend.
The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/292dk27 ) that 29-year-old Donzell Canada, one of Gray’s close friends, was fatally shot Wednesday in West Baltimore.
Canada, known as “Zelly,” said last year that Gray was his childhood friend and one of more than 10 that he’d known to have died. In August, Canada told the Sun that friends marked what would have been Gray’s 26th birthday with a cookout, a visit to his grave and a movie “as if he were here.”
Rodney Hudson, a pastor of the nearby Ames Memorial United Methodist Church, remembered Canada and Gray as humorous and loyal friends.
