WASHINGTON (UPI) — The son of televangelist Jerry Falwell has endorsed Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for president.
The news comes a week after Trump appeared at Liberty University, where Jerry Falwell Jr. serves as president.
“In my opinion, Donald Trump lives a life of loving and helping others as Jesus taught in the great commandment,” Falwell said in introducing him at Liberty. “He cannot be bought, he’s not a puppet on a string like many other candidates … who have wealthy donors as their puppet masters.”
Tuesday’s endorsement was just as glowing.
In a statement obtained by the Washington Post, Falwell Jr. called Trump “a successful executive and entrepreneur, a wonderful father and a man who I believe can lead our country to greatness again.”
The endorsement comes days before the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1. The evangelical vote is a crucial factor in the early-decision state, a vote which Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has been seeking to all but tie up.
Falwell Jr. has long expressed admiration for Trump. In December, he told Fox News’ Sean Hannity: “I think Trump reminds me so much of my father.”
