A mother shielding her children from a mob that had gathered outside her house was shot in the neck and one of her daughters shot in the torso Thursday night in the Burnside neighborhood.
The two were among at least six shot, one fatally, since Thursday morning.
The 41-year-old mother and her 19-year-old daughter were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, police said. The mother was shot in the neck and the daughter suffered three torso wounds and one leg wound.
“About 15” young men showed up to the family home in the 600 block of East 92nd Place about 5:50 p.m., a relative said.
The mother began to argue with the men, said Ruthie Patterson, who arrived just beore the shooting. The mother blocked the gates of her house with her body so that the men couldn’t get through.
“He said, ‘Let’s box,'” Patterson said. “Dude picked up a brick and busted the windows.”
A few of the men then attempted to jump through the broken windows while the mother hurried to block the front door.
“And that’s when you heard it. Pow, pow, pow,” Patterson said. “I laid down. There were at least 30 shots.”
By the time Patterson entered the house, the men had fled. She ran toward the woman, and, realizing she had been shot near her chin, grabbed a towel and urged her to sit down.
Patterson pressed the towel against her jaw and watched blood seep through the cloth and spill from between her lips.
She then heard a noise from around the corner.
“‘I heard (the daughter) say, ‘I’m hit!'” Patterson said. “And then I saw her and she was on the ground.”
