This Valentine’s Day, I’m thinking about what I love about America.
Having traveled the world and studied abroad, I know there’s no greater place on Earth that provides more freedom, prosperity and opportunity to all — especially to women — who are horrifically oppressed under Sharia Law and denied basic human rights in Middle Eastern nations.
In America you get to be who you want to be and create the life you want to live. Your only limits are your imagination and your willingness to work hard and believe in yourself. Adding to that precious gift of liberty is an abundance of special people, places and things that make up the fabric of America. No doubt we’ve got a lot to love. Here’s my short list:
–Freedom of Speech. It allowed us to hear “I have a Dream,” by Martin Luther King Jr. and listen to other great Americans who inspired us and bettered our world.
–The Second Amendment. It protects the First Amendment.
–Liberty, democracy and our flag. We must cherish and protect all three.
–Thanksgiving and the Super Bowl. Two fun days with friends and family when calories don’t count.
–Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I’ll never forget horseback riding through a field of wildflowers and encountering a massive moose munching on huckleberries. Add to it the majestic Grand Tetons in the background. A reminder to log off devices and take in nature more because in life the simple things are often the best things.
–Rock music. Whether it’s catching a local act at a dive bar, going to an outdoor music festival or a concert at Fenway … it’s all good.
–New England foliage.
–Our troops and veterans. They show us what real courage and sacrifice looks like.
–Boston sports fans. You just have to live here to understand.
–The Statue of Liberty.
–Washington, D.C. The history, architecture and cherry blossoms.
–Nantucket beaches and sunsets. Add to that flip-flops.
–The North End in Boston. Dine in any restaurant or just walk around … it feels like home.
–Our men and women in blue, firemen and first responders — heroes who rise to the occasion to protect us each and every day.
–The freedom to choose who you love.
Remember that a life without love is like the Fourth of July without fireworks.
