McDonald’s will be implementing diversity hiring quotas, including a goal of achieving gender parity in leadership roles by 2030. While the concept is not a new one, its implementation at one of the world’s largest and most popular companies raises questions about the validity of the practice.
“[F]or the first time in our history, we’re implementing policies that hold our leaders directly accountable for making tangible progress on our DEI goals,” the world’s favorite burger chain announced Thursday.
The company is introducing “quantitative human capital management-related metrics” (or diversity quotas) as determinants for VP compensation. Executives will be evaluated based on ability to “improve representation within leadership roles for both women and historically underrepresented groups.”
Stated goals include 35% of leadership roles filled by members of “underrepresented groups,” and over 45% filled by females by 2025. Full gender parity is to be achieved by 2030.
“As a world-leading brand that considers inclusion one of our core values, we will accept nothing less than real, measurable progress in our efforts to lead with empathy, treat people with dignity and respect, and seek out diverse points of view to drive better decision-making,” President and CEO Chris Kempczinski said. “Today, I would like to share two goals we have set as we continue to build the strong foundation we need to fully realize our ambition.”
But even those who place value in the concepts of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” have repeatedly pointed out that these types of hiring quotas are misguided at best, and empty performances at worst, with unintended negative consequences.
Even the progressive corporate giants at the World Economic Forum have warned that diversity hiring quotas are often a “quick fix,” and are often simply a sort of easy way out for companies looking to check the “diversity” box that society has bestowed upon them.
“Quotas may be a quick fix to boosting female representation on boards, but they do nothing in and of themselves to remove barriers preventing many women from rising up the corporate ladder in the first place. We are in need of a broader, more comprehensive approach,” Moelis & Company Vice-Chairman and Managing Director wrote for the Forum in 2020.
“Ultimately, to achieve greater gender diversity in leadership, company leadership must focus on the entirety of their talent pipeline, recognizing the problems are likely different at each rung of the ladder,” he added. “Although this approach is harder than the quick fix of a quota, there is little doubt that it is more likely to result in success both for the cause of diversity and for the cause of improving business performance.”
A study from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of management that analyzed the arguments for and against such programs pointed out similar issues, as well as multiple negative unforeseen consequences of quotas. Particularly compelling is the study’s warning that such policies may backfire, causing other employees to view women and minorities negatively.
“There is a possibility that they will be seen as less qualified and only on the board because of the quotas,” the researchers warned. This may hurt their ability to contribute to board discussions and undermine their effectiveness.
“This is particularly true if women are added to boards at token levels. Evidence suggests that a single woman on a board will likely be marginalized or delegitimized.”
Similarly, the study warned that employees may begin to resent diversity initiatives all together, once the moral goal of inclusion is mandated by authority.
“Psychological research has consistently shown that when someone else forces or rewards people for doing something, they become less motivated about the task: they attribute their motivation to coercion,” the study notes. “In the case of quotas, even if employees personally believe in working toward gender diversity, imposed quotas can make them believe that they only care about diversity because the company wants them to not because they do personally.”
There is also the inevitable result of otherwise open-minded employees developing adverse attitudes to the concept of diversity in general, after experiencing a quota that adversely impacts them personally.
“Perceptions of unfairness can trigger unintended negative consequences. Employers who impose quotas may become less attractive to male job applicants. Quotas may also lead to low engagement and negative job attitudes among male employees. Furthermore, this perception of unfairness may cause men to become less supportive of diversity policies than they were prior to implementing quotas.”
And of course, in many cases, these policies are just downright illegal, as acknowledged by the same study:
“In some jurisdictions, quotas may violate legislation. In the United States, for example, constitutional law would likely present insurmountable obstacles to the promulgation of a quota-based regime. Even where quotas are legal, people may interpret quotas as a violation of perceptions of justice at the individual level, even if they are creating more fairness in terms of gender distribution at the societal level.”
While many argue that such quotas are clearly unconstitutional, many have implemented them anyway, often in the face of massive discrimination lawsuits. YouTube, Google, and Starbucks have seen related suits in recent years.
But Big Business is merely following in the footsteps of the American university system, as is often the case when it comes to issues of social perception. For the past several years, diversity initiatives, including quotas have become the norm on American college campuses, not only with hiring processes, but within the student admission process as well.
Harvard University is currently embroiled in a years-long legal battle against a group that claims its diversity based admissions processes discriminate against Asian students by holding them to a higher standard than other applicants. A federal court ruled in favor of Harvard in November, but plaintiff group Students for Fair Admissions has expressed intent to take the case to the Supreme Court.
Harvard’s is perhaps the most widely-known case of this nature, but top universities have been tallying up race and gender of students and employees to earn diversity points for years, often with no challenge or consequence.

The dumbing down of American corporations and the American colleges, by not hiring the best of the best and hiring unqualified people in the name of diversity. In other words, how to destroy a society rapidly! Let’s obtain a degree in “gender studies”, let’s obtain a degree in “diversity”. No wonder, the United States, in education, is behind almost all groups in the developed world. The head of McDonalds is a complete airhead. If the head of McDonalds was put on the donkey farm (and there is another name for donkeys), the donkeys would throw him off the donkey farm, as donkeys have more common sense than many human beings.
I find McDonalds has lost its touch with the common people. It use to be a quick inexpensive eating experience. No more… this move makes it easier for me to never enter a McDonalds again. There other healthy choices. Chick-fil-A comes to mind.

McDonald’s has always been at the bottom far as quality goes. Surly employees, wrong orders. I watched a show on history channel last night about the war between burger king and McDonald’s.
Burger King could innovate but McDonald’s was tied strictly to ray crocks vision. Nothing has changed. McDonald’s has replaced surly counter help with surly touch screen kiosks and that’s pretty much it.
McDonald’s has always hired 95 percent blacks where I live, or more, although Mexicans have taken many of the jobs. Don’t know what they pay but it is hard work. Not sure if todays cupcake teens could handle it.
When i was growing up, i got a job at a Carl’s Jr in Fresno. OF THE STAFF, all of us white folks, seemed to ONLY GET jobs in the back, doing the cooking. If you were latino or black, you got the jobs in the Front serving customers, EVEN IF THAT MEANT MORE buggered up orders, cause the folks out there had a hard time UNDERSTANDING PLAIN English.. CALL cause the store manager himself was latino, and married a black gal.
What a great idea. No more need to work hard, smart, honestly, or conscientiously; just sit on your butt, collect your check, and wait for your protected group registration number to come up. That is a sure path to corporate success.
Unless you’re white, male or conservative. IN WHICH CASE you will NEVER EVER gain any protected group status.. EVEN IF WE became only 1% of society.

Lets look at the Mc Education quotas …. In the United States, there are approximately 5,300 colleges and universities…. sooooo the 8 IVY League schools would make up only .00150943 % of all those McEducation quotas for example to acceptance to Law schools….. hhhmmm …and Lawyer Quotas would have to represent the ethic makeup of the US Census …. WOW this McQuota thing may not be such a great idea afterall….
The fact is, no one is making you eat there………yet. So don’t, and encourage your friends to do the same.
I don’t eat their **** anyway so I don’t care what they do !! Every time some company creates a “QUOTA” for jobs , based on something besides merit, the overall performance goes down. It gives those passed over, an excuse for complaining which leads to a less than enthusiastic job performance and for the person promoted, they get the ire of subordinates for not being worthy of the job. It is the worse type of stupidity and a tried and true failure of human engineering, that has been around ever since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The complaint that this group or that group aren’t represented , is false . They are if they’re capable and aren’t because they’re not. It’s that simple.
What a crock! Go in any McD’s around the country and you will see the vast majority of the workers, and I use that term worker very loosely, are black or Mexican. This is just one more step in the eventual downgrade of this country. Hell, they had to put pictures on the cash registers so the uneducated could take someone’s order. Guess you don’t have to be qualified in today’s liberal world, all you have to do is belong to some minority group. No wonder this country is going to hell.
Our locale has only had a McDonald’s for about 15 years. It was all minority employees when they opened.
The service was so slow and poor the place nearly failed until they replaced the staff with an English speaking crew capable of counting change and pushing the correct buttons.
The self service Kiosks, credit cards and robotics (cooking and serving) will solve these issues in the next 10 years!
Robot cashiers, High priced veggie burgers and no one buying the overpriced **** at McDonalds will solve this.

On the upside, this is one thing I won’t miss, Burger King is a MUCH better burger! They say you can go into any McDonald’s anywhere in the world and get the exact same meal, always ****! Seriously, how do you screw up a milkshake?

Anyone who has been around a few decades, knows this “diversity quotas” is nothing but Affirmative Action 2.0, which FAILED miserably! Highly qualified people were passed over for jobs that were given to ethnic minorities to fill the QUOTAS.
Why on earth should any company be forced to hire someone less qualified for a job…no matter what race they are! It is bad for business, and definitely not fair to the lesser qualified persons who often ended up losing the job because they weren’t qualified and couldn’t do the job.
And NO, I am NOT SAYING different ethnic groups are less qualified…I’m saying, hiring someone based on ethnicity or race, rather than qualifications is STUPID and WRONG!!

McDonalds has screwed up their menu and the taste of their food. They now have crappy milkshakes, the fries are always greasy and over salted and the hamburger taste like it’s a mix between 10% beef and 90% soy bean. Burgerking has also gone down hill but they still have a good breakfast. For a hamburger I prefer Wendy’s but will also go to A & W and Culvers has a pretty good burger. Arby’s is for better beef. But I can still make a better burger than any of them on my own grill. Haven’t been to a McDonalds in over 2 years from which my wife and I almost puked up the worthless food the last and final time. Beside that, McDonalds prices aren’t very cheap anymore even though the food now isn’t worth the price of 40 years ago.
McDonalds and their commie policies. No high ground for a company that has been destroying peoples health for decades. Their food is better suited as animal treats.

It’s not just McDonald’s but also burger king. Burger king has 2whoppers for 5.00. I ordered 2 total came to $5.40. I gave the girl $10.40. She gave me $5.60 back . She used a Calculator and still got it wrong. They were busy and no one could help her. I gave her the change back ,she was Confused and just put the change in the till and Slammed it shut. Never even said thank you.
