To the people in Washington... it does take a rocket scientist to recognize what's going on around the country. It's clear why Republicans lost power, and it is certainly clear that people are learning what Democrats will do when given full power in government. America is not a socialist country, yet that's exactly the type of country Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid want to see.

So, how does the Republican Party regain its footing? It's simple, really. The leaders of the Republican Party only have to look around. The answer is staring them in the face. They lost because they strayed from conservatism and adopted the "let's just stay in power" philosophy. That's a recipe for disaster... here's a recipe for winning...

First, here's some interesting information from a new poll in the Washington Post. The poll was taken of Republicans and Republican-leaning adults.

When asked whether the leadership of the Republican Party was taking the party in the right direction, 76% said yes in 2005. Only 23% said no. Now, in 2009, the 76% has dropped to 49%, and the "wrong direction" response jumped to 42%. Something is clearly wrong.

Only 37% of Republicans in the survey felt that the Republican Party shared their views on most issues. Only 37%! If that's all the support the party can generate, then we are in trouble.

Looking at the ideological map, 72% of Republicans in the survey consider themselves to be conservative. Only 22% said they were moderate. Another survey in the news recently showed that 40% of the country considered themselves to be conservative, while only 20% considered themselves to be liberal. Yet, which direction do party leaders want to move? Do they want to attract more people by being conservative? Uh... no.

On the issues, respondents felt that the party puts too little emphasis on taxes, federal spending, illegal immigration, and the economy and jobs. Federal spending was supposedly one of our core beliefs, right? Yet that and corruption are what started to turn the tide of public opinion away from the Republican Party over the last decade.

So, what does the party do? Here's a recipe for success. Please feel free to tweak it to your particular taste.

Recipe for Conservative Victory

Ingredients

  • 10 lbs of guts
  • 7 lbs of conservative philosophy
  • 3 lbs of common sense
  • 2 cups of real world experiences
  • 2 cups of ethics
  • 4 tbsp of passion
  • 3 tbsp charisma
  • 1 pinch of humor

Preparation

  • Find 10 lbs of guts. This is easier said than done, and is by far the hardest part of the recipe. This may take a while, so START NOW!
  • Once guts have been acquired and verified, mix in the conservative philosophy. This ingredient is easy to find, but is often contaminated or mislabled. Make sure conservative philosophy is 100% pure.
  • Blend in common sense, making sure it clings to the conservative philosophy, which will produce a taste quite appealing to most people.
  • Sprinkle in the 2 cups of real world experiences. This ingredient should not be excluded as the result produced a hard, card board effect that may be appetizing to some, but leaves most people wondering what got left out.
  • Stir in 2 cups of ethics. Recipe will taste the same without it, but it will go bad very soon. The dish is even better as leftovers years from now, so don't forget the ethics.
  • Add 4 tbsp of passion. This gives the dish some "kick." People don't want to be put to sleep, they want to be energized. Passion is the key.
  • The 3 tbsp of charisma are becoming more essential. Although not necessary for a healthy and satisfying dish, charisma attracts people to try it in the first place.
  • Finally, add a pinch of humor to keep people interested.
  • Bake for a year or so... Not too long as there is much work to do.

That's it... that's all it takes. Some ingredients are hard to find, but the preparation is easy, and Americans will love it! Give it a try. To our leaders in Washington, I suggest shopping for the ingredients now. We have elections soon and guts are very hard to find.

Bobby, that's a great summary of whats needed. I'm not sure of the exact proportions, but the recipe is worth a try. But are the party leaders watching?

ClubmanComment by Clubman
December 1, 2009 @ 11:45 am

What is needed is people in charge who do the right thing because it is the right thing to do, not because it is the politically correct thing. If one does what is right simply because it is right you need no other reason. People will respect that.

Doing what is right is not hard, knowing what is right, that is hard.

Most of what I've seen from the leadership says they are not following this recipe, and are headed toward snatching defeat from the jaws of victory again.

I no longer consider myself a Republican; but rather a conservative. I will no longer vote for RINOs. And, I think there are a lot like me.

I agree whith what you say Ken and also agree with Bobby. To answer your question Ken, in my opinion the answer is no. The leaders of the Republican party are not watching, and that is the biggest problem we face as a party. We definitely need to find leaders with ingredients that bobby has outlined. Let's get to work and find those qualities in the leaders first and the rest will be easy.

I agree with alraden in that I am a conservative first, Republican second. Bobby, as with some cooks, recipes are tinkered with to try and establish a new taste that appeals to the masses that will (hopefully) ultimately make you popular...unfortunately, as I have found too often, being conservative doesn't always make you popular, but at least people always know where I stand. Isn't this what most Americans want? Someone that you know where they stand no matter what new crisis or issue may arise? It is too easy to "drive" from the backseat and always blame everything on the last administration or others, true mettle is sticking to your guns even when it may not be universally popular.

Did any of you feel as I did during the last election .......... "Is this what we have to choose from?????" and that was from both sides of the coin. I agree, our leadership is out of touch and needs to be replaced now. We have a chance to turn things around but it cannot be done with the people we have now directing the party. During the last election, I had several conservative Republican friends vote dem. They felt the same way I do, we lost our direction. It's time to make changes.

The recipe makes NO mention of seasoning with 100% cooking in the CONSTITUTION! That is the PROBLEM with the garbage that is turned out in the "stove" of Congress.!
Were the recipe "cooked" with the Constitution there would be less governmen, more individual responsibility and then, with God's help, we can build a better world!
I suggest that the acronym SCRAP be the motto which means: I vote against anything that increases the SIZE, the COST, the REACH and the POWER of the Government.

I've dropped out of the Republican party and am now registered as an Independant. Repub's or any candidate from any party will now have to earn my support by proving they hold conservative values similiar or as close to my own.
* Secure our borders
* No Amnesty for illegals
* Drill for oil here
* Build nuclear power plants
* Preserve my 2nd ammendment rights
* Respect life at any stage
* Lower taxes
* Smaller Government
* No public health care
* Term limits for the Senate, Congress & Judges
* Get back to being a Christian/Judeo nation
* Limit foreign aid to those that respect us
* Keep our military strong and well paid
* Recognize that we here in America speak English first.

I don't think the Republican leadership support the Constitution anymore than the Democrats. Nor have they since President Reagan.

I found their actions in New York 23 deplorable.

I find their inability or lack or willingness to fight the Healthcare unthinkable, especially since there is a Constitutional issues with the bill.

I'm adopting Mal's motto of SCRAP.

If I have a choice, I'm voting third party in 2010, if there is a valid election.

If the GOP doesn't "man" or "woman" up in short order they will lose the people who are just waiting a bit longer to hear/see what their plan is. No plan = no donations and less republicans.

They need to act like the republican party used to be, with determination, values and guts! Where did those people go?

I think your recipe is a lot short on common sense. Make it at least 10 lbs. If our so called leaders would stop worrying about political correctness and focus on the issues, which you enumerate quite well in your article, we may get taxpayers and citizens (read voters) to listen.

Good recipe. However, I too have become an Independent. The GOP will have to prove to me they will not only say the right words, but also take the right action. Obviously, this also means NO MORE $$$ from me. Personally, I demand adherence to our Constitution! Let's just start there and a lot of sores will mend on their own. BTW - Why the bleep are Republicans so afraid of the Constitution? I understand the Dems/Progressives - they just hate it - but I don't understand the Republicans' fear.

Nice recipe, Bobby. It sort of sums up Reagan. I can't believe how little the GOP "leaders" talk about Reagan and those conservative values he espoused and spoke of over and over again. Some how we have to break through their hard heads with your simple message of what it takes to not only be true to ourselves but to win! God help us do this. Would it start with replacing Michael Steele who seems essentially worthless and counterproductive. We really do need a good leader (in the mold of Reagan) to pull this off.

I have a superb candidate to recommend: Judge Andrew Napolitano. Along with him I would recommend Former Speaker Newt Gingrich. I know a lot of people do not like Speaker Gingrich, but I also know that a lot of people took the rightist press as the truth about him. I will not say he has not made mistakes, but I know of no other viable candidate with the range of ideas and knowhow to get the job done. His getting the job done is what got him railroaded from the House. He angered too many RINOs with his tough approach. The same thing happened with Tom Delay. RINOs do not like being called to task on their "moderate" ideas (for moderate, substitute the word wishy-washy)

I don’t know where to find enough guts to fill every elected position. But, I do know how to check the purity of Conservative Conviction. Most people know it when they see it or at least notice when it’s missing. So if you shine a bright light on it and then let a whole bunch of people vote either for or against each individual sample presented, then you can rank each candidate sample by subtracting the against votes from the for votes to determine the one with the most potential potency.

Using FOAM (The For Or Against Method) in our Primaries would guarantee our candidates are as closely aligned to our core beliefs as possible. Use of FOAM makes a lot of sense. Only someone who isn’t a conservative should oppose the use of FOAM. Ask yourself what possible objection could a conservative have to change that would nominate more conservatives.

To Rick1029. Your positions reflect, I believe, most traditional Americans that appreciate the foundations of this country, and to get our government and politicians back onto this agenda, they need a strong message from us in the next election cycles. To do this, however, means that we have to work within the two party system at this time. Going to a third party, which may be a good idea at some time in the future if nothing else works, will not do it in the near term. So, therefore, we have to create what we can call the " new or revitalized Republican party" because, traditionally, the Republicans come closer to your list then do Democrats. The Independents in this country are really in control of what is going to happen looking forward, but, they have to get involved starting with the primaries where we select the best candidates who will do what we need them to do. So, therefore, you, for example, need to register as a Republican (even though you do not totally agree with their behavior at this time) and help to elect those candidates we want. The third party strategy in the near term is going to help the liberals, not the conservatives of this country. We cannot allow ourselves to fall into this trap in 2010 and 2012, unless, some miracle candidate comes onto the scene and creates a huge new party that takes voters from both of the current parties and becomes a major factor in the elections. The likelihood of this happening by next year is slim to nothing, and probably not by 2012.

So, all concerned Americans need to overhaul the Republican party and reshape it using something like your list of attributes as a basis for the platform and what it stands for looking ahead. Then we need some form of litmus test for selecting candidates so that we can actually begin to regain control of Washington and our governments at large. This concept has to be worked at all levels of government and it starts at the local level and goes up.

Just about every state and major city that is in fiscal trouble is being run by the Democrats in this country and that also has to be fixed.

It is a huge undertaking that our kids and grandkids need for us to take on now...not later.

It's a great starting point, but how about adding a ton of "America First" to the mix. We need representatives who will bring our AMERICAN jobs back from COMMUNIST China. I would greatly prefer buying things that didn't say "Made in China" and broke in short order; I'll wager that most Americans would agree. Now consider this: while people moan and groan about our dependence on Middle Eastern oil and fear having the taps turned off, think about just how dependant we are on China for essentially everything that's manufactured. What happens when the ChiComms decide they want Taiwan back and we defend Taiwan from China (as we are obligated by treaty to do) - what then?

Phony jobs bills won't put America back to work - bringing our jobs back home will. Think about it: a massive boom for the construction industry as they begin building new facilities for businesses or refurbish old ones....a surge in manufacturing as machinery has to be built and installed....people going back to work at decent wages.....and lastly, the pride in buying American made products.

Canceling NAFTA & GATT would give us a 6 month window to "get 'er done" - why won't anyone "man up" & do it?

STAND WITH THE CONSITUTION YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. IT IS BECAUSE OF OUR CONSITUTION THAT MADE OUR COUNTRY GREAT TO START WITH.
IT WAS INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT THROUGH OUR FOREFATHERS. FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT READ "5000 YEAR LEAP" I HIGHLY BELIEVE ALL LEADERSHIP IN THE GOP NEEDS TO READ IT.YOU CAN GO TO THE LIBRARY OR MOST BOOKSTORES TO FIND IT. IT REALLY WAS A MIRACLE OF GOD TO WRITE OUR CONSITUTION.IT WILL BE MORE THAN WORTH YOUR TIME TO READ THIS BOOK.

Start with 1 spine and add the guts and the rest. Without a framework, there isn't a need for the rest.

Compassion comes from helping others help themselves. There are always going to be folks who need help - but rather than the government way up in DC, the help needs to come from local sources who can truly gauge what needs to be done - it would also eliminate much of the corruption.

We must protect the most innocent of our populations, the unborn, the elderly and the infirm from the tyranny that is looming.

Look at Germany before WWII. One of the first things that Hitler and his cronies did was to exermintate those in institutions. Then anyone who didn't agree with the Nazi philosphy.

I told the Republicans 4 years ago when they grew a spine, stopped acting like Democrats and stopped spending, I'd start giving them money again. Obviously, they haven't gotten a dime from me and won't in the near future.

We must stand up and stand together for conservative principles. We must get our elected officals to "walk the walk".

Want a prescription or recipe for GOP victory in 2010 and for the foreseeable future--nun on a roll back or undo platform.

It is well past the time when the GOP should be focused on retaking our Country and restoring our Constitutional Republic rather than just slowing its decline a bit here and there...seems they never heard the Arabian parable of the camel and the tent...ie "let a camel put his nose in your tent and soon you will have the whole damn thing in there with you...."

Its time to REVERSE COURSE!!!

That's what I want to hear...and not a thing less will do....zero, zip, nada!!!

Is anyone listening out there?

If not now...when?

Comment by rjim: "...If I have a choice, I'm voting third party in 2010..."

rjim:
This is the worst thing that you could do - vote for a third party! The best way to get Obama re-elected in 2012 is to create a third party that will do nothing but split the GOP vote! A third party would not only "drain" votes away from the GOP ticket, but it would also not get enough support to beat Obama. Instead of ONE strong conservative group, there would be TWO flimsy conservative groups - ensuring an Obama win! Let's not do this! Instead, we must require/insist the Republicans return to conservative values and join together with "tea partiers" and make it one strong Republican party. Make THEM adopt OUR values.
