For years the Republican Party has been a source of frustration for conservatives. Yes, the Republican Party is the vehicle to victory if conservatives want any chance of passing solid legislation, but too often that vehicle has an ejector seat. Only moderates, or RINOs (Republicans In Name Only), are allowed on board.

This week may have been the start of an awakening within the Republican Party leadership. I don't need to mention the conservative base, because we already know what we believe in. It's the "leaders" of our party who don't. However, after stunning gubernatorial wins in New Jersey and Virginia, and the near victory of a long-shot congressional candidate, establishment Republicans can no longer pretend that conservatism doesn't sell.

For the past decade, conservatives had put their hopes in the Republican Party only to feel betrayed and bewildered. Republicans swept to victory on a conservative message, then governed like big-spending Democrats. Adding a brand new massive entitlement (prescription drug coverage) is not conservative. Passing spending bill after spending bill that blow the budget and are lined with pork is not conservative. Is it any wonder that Americans turned out the Republicans? More Americans consider themselves to be conservative than liberal or moderate, yet Republicans acted as if the key vote was the liberal vote. Pathetic!

Then, we had the events of this week. In dramatic fashion, a message was sent to Barack Obama and his left-wing band of socialists that we aren't going to take it any more. America was mad at Republicans, but this is crazy. Does Obama really think that we want to turn away from the origins and spirit that made this country great?

A message was also sent to Republican leaders in Washington: the only way to win is to return to conservative roots and run on conservative issues. That's what happened in New Jersey and Virginia. And let's look at NY-23. A group of 11 people sitting around a restaurant pick a "friend of a friend" who has no business running as a Republican. She is NOT a Republican. The voters rebelled and a conservative candidate with no experience nearly won. In fact, Doug Hoffman would have won had the small percentage of Scozzafava voters actually voted for him.

As conservatives, we can all see what the election results mean. What we've probably all been wondering for the last few days is whether the Republican leadership is seeing the same thing we are. Well, there is hope.

In a web interview with ABC News, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele had a message for wayward Republicans: get back to conservative principles or "we'll come after you."

During the interview with ABCNews.com's Top Line program, Steele said:

"Well I'm gonna tell you honestly, that's where the line gets a little bit tricky. And you saw in the House and in the Senate that there are ramifications, because that goes against a core principle. And trust me, you're assuming that people want to have bloated debt, government expenditures and growth into their lives -- they don't. That's a talking point out of the DNC."

"You're gonna find yourself in a very tough hole if you're arguing for the president's stimulus plan or Nancy Pelosi's health plan. There's no justification for growing the size of government the way this administration and this Congress wants to do it."

In his own blog post following the Tuesday elections, Steele wrote:

Because of your efforts, the Republican Party is once again a bottom-up party. The Republican Party has once again found its voice. The great candidates that won last night shared your vision and heard your message. You energized behind these core Republican conservative principles and candidates and rejected the failed Democrat policies.

Because of your efforts, we are now positioned to show new strength as a Party moving forward. Republicans will take that momentum into the 2010 mid-term elections and beyond.

You did not waver in your convictions...and the Republican Party will be guided by and through this voice. I thank you, the grassroots.

Steele's warning, although somewhat tepid, is definitely surprising. I heard speeches myself at RNC meetings where they virtually disavowed conservatives, instead saying, "Let's all just be nice and be moderate." More of the country is conservative... not moderate or liberal, and yet the Republican leaders want to turn away from conservatism? How stupid!

Steele's comments also mirror the activities of the conservative Club for Growth. As noted in a report on USA Today, Club for Growth is "airing ads attacking Gov. Charlie Crist , R-Fla., for supporting President Obama's stimulus package."

The report also quoted another telling line from Steele's interview: "I don't need you to identify as a Republican," Steele said. "I need you to identify as a conservative. We are the conservative party."

Wow! Did I just read that correctly? What is going on in Washington?

There is no doubt that conservatives are energized. We have such a golden opportunity given Obama, Pelosi, and Reid's efforts at taking even more freedom away from the American people and putting more control in government. If Republicans can just get their act together, we could have staggering electoral success in 2010 and 2012.

But we have to learn our lessons. If Americans give Republicans another chance, and we don't govern as conservatives, I feel it could be the end of the Republican Party. If the Republican Party props up candidates to run as conservatives, then govern as moderates, what difference is there between a Democrat and a Republican?

Conservatives need a place to go, and that place had been the Republican Party. Through Steele's talk, maybe the establishment is seeing that conservatives are the key to moving forward. If they don't see the writing on the wall, then conservatives will eventually move forward without the Republican Party. Now is the critical time to mend fences and get back to conservative principles. Now is the time.

We can only hope, but I'm not sure the elections this week made enough of an impression on "moderate" Democrats either if Pelosi and company are claiming they'll have enough votes to pass this monstrosity of a health care bill. The House and Senate just won't listen to what the people want. It's scary.

If a so-called Republican has even one "moderate," position I won't vote for him/her. Let's face it, if (when) the dollar collapses from government's overspending, boosted by all of the feel-good nonsense, we will see suffering in this country that we haven't seen in well over 100 years. India just bought 200 tons of gold to make it through the collapse of the dollar. China plans to do the same. Russia has already printed a sample of a new "world currency." The recent G20 confab was making plans for a new world financial system -- with an unimportant dollar.

We're in the last inning with two outs, and we're behind by ten runs. There is no time for half measures.

This article is right on about how the GOP got control of Congress by pitching conservative government and then turned right around around and acted like a bunch of big government Dems.

If I'm not mistaken, the current GOP leaders endorsed the RINO Dede Sozzafava. Even Newt Gingrich endorsed her. What's up with that. And now they're saying conservatism is the way to go? Somehow I'm not convinced.

I'll need a lot more convincing before I'll give any of my financial support to the GOP. I really feel betrayed by the party and wish there was a viable real conservative party to support.

When Republicans go against us on key issues like expanding government, raising taxes, and helping liberals pass their agenda, they should be challenged by conservatives in primary elections. Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lindsay Graham, John McCain are a few that should be challenged for their RINO status because Democrats can count on picking them off on some of their issues even though it goes against our conservative principles. We don't need members in office who walk away from our principles for political expediency.

Lock and load! See ya Snow, Collins, McCain, Graham, ET AL!

Let all the liberals/radicals/statists have the Democratic Party and the conservatives take make up the Republican Party. Maybe this will get the so-called moderates to take a stand and join one side or the other.

Amen Raven and sondelaz!

As Adm. Yamamoto once said, "I'm afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant", referring to the attack on Pearl Harbor. That is what Obama and the dems have done, along with the Republican leadership. Not to mention political correctness which, sadly, is responsible for the tragedy at Ft. Hood yesterday.

Well let's hope so. If we plan to change the face of politics and we want the Democrats to understand that we are the people, we have to make our own party understand first. They work for us. It is clear liberals like Pelosi and Reid have lost sight of this. Let's hope they lose sight of the job they have in 2010. It's time we take back our country. It's time the RNC listens to the conservative grass roots. We are not the minority. The enemy is.

Can anyone explain to me how it is a person with a questionable background, and questionable citizenship can be elected and assume the office of POTUS? Seems to me if a person can't or won't prove his citizenship then he should not be elgible to run for the office. How did this happen. We need to change the system.

After 8 years of Bush, conservatives were in a punishing, masochistic mood. Now were are enjoying the masochistic portion of our votes. I did not vote for either Party. How/why the Republican Party chose McCain is beyond me. And then HE chooses Palin who is FAR from qualifed - unbelievable! And people wonder why the Republicnas lost. The talking heads all poo-poo'd Ron Paul - yet now they clamor to interview him as a lot of what he predicted is coming true. The Republican Party can thank Ron Paul for the current "radical" conservative movement - he awoke hope in 100's of 1000's of people that normally were apolitical. While still a very small minority, the "TEA Party" people are very vocal and very well organized, as Mr. Steele recently discovered. And they have the RINOs in their sights. I suggest Mr. Steele take notice and in 2010 be more careful in who the RNC officially backs. Perhaps take a little closer look at principles rather than just looking for an "R" after the name. Finally, hopefully the conservatives in Maine will wake up and get rid of their RINOs.

My criticism for years of the Republican party is that the leaders have not followed the principles set forth in the party platform. Either they are validating the conspiracy theorists rants, or thwey listen too much to the (so-called) Mainstream Media.)

McCain, Bush, Dole, et al, did not really stand up for the ideals of most Republican - or the majority of the American people for that matter. You should have remembered the lesson from Reagan: Take a no-compromising stand for the ideals that are "America," get that out to the people, believe in the citizens, and don't worry what the media say. Reagan would have easily won a third term if the Constitution had allowed it. The only reason George H.W. Bush was elected was because he rode the coat tails of reagan's popularity, but when he showed himself to be nothing but a RINO, he gave us eight years of Bill Clinton, and you can thank GeeDubya for Obama.

Push someone such as Ron Paul or Alan Keyes to the front. If we're still having free elections by 2012 you can almost guarentee a win.

Now, go find true Conservatives, Libertarians, and Constitutionalists for next year's elections.

Why are we going after the scraps? The Republican party needs a major house cleaning. Where are the leaders who will go after the tree of the problem (progressivism, liberalism, in short they are all MARXISM) and not the branches of the problem (social security, medicare, etc.) The RINO's are just one part of the house cleaning that needs to be done, the Blue Blood Republican (Liberal in their mentality, and basically the leadership of the republican party. We need leaders who know that the origin of our country was based on Christianity and we need to go back to those roots. Ironic, our founding fathers and later the founder of our republican party knew the foundation of our country(the Bible)and in the last 100 years we have found a system(marxism) to put in place and drive this country into the ground. Thing are happening now that happen in the early 20th century. The difference is that now China, not Germany, is being held up as the idea form of government. We need to wake up and seek out the truth of who we are before we lose this country and our idenity to the Hell that this administration and the world has instore for us.

Having been hip deep in the NY23rd race, I have one piece of advice: Get involved in your LOCAL GOP party if you want to have any effect on the type of candidates they give us. THEY were the ones who chose Dede Scozzafava, RINO extrordinaire. THEY were the ones who made the backroom deal that got her on the ballot. They say "all politics is local"....this race proved it for me.

Above is what the RNC gets with every fund raising request. It sounds like Mr. Steele has become less tone deaf, recently, however. The RNC has to announce something like the 1994 "Contract with America" to really get my support and attention.

re: mktnr3 comment, I have to agree.

We were inundated by Pro-life & pro-marriage advocates in the NY23rd. So much so, that people were complaining at our local offices. I believe in the sanctity of life...it is our FIRST inalienable right! I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman...live your life how you want, but DON'T try to change the definition of marriage because a small percentage of the population feels left out. BUT...having said all that, the overzealous "support" we got from groups who only cared about those issues, cost us votes. Groups of people covered cars with pro-life & pro-marriage literature in CHURCH PARKING LOTS ON SUNDAY! Calls were made to people 5 and 6 times PER NIGHT! Support from pro-life and pro-marriage advocates is welcomed and appreciated, but when it starts intruding on people's daily lives, it is not helpful at all and I know it did cost Doug Hoffman some votes! Please, pass this information along to those who want to "help".

Columnist Mark Steyn coined a new term to describe the likes of Scozzafava: DIABLO (Democrat In All But Label Only). Much more fitting than RINO (for some).

I think I'll use RINO for the squishy "Moderates" (those Republicans who TALK a good talk, but when it comes down to FIGHTING for solid Republican [Conservative] principles, they prefer to cave to the demands of the Liberals), and use DIABLO for the DeeDee Scozzafava, Arlen Specter types (at least Specter had the decency to actually LEAVE the Republican Party)!

Hey, can someone in the GOP "Elite" explain WHY they backed Scozzafava AND Specter? WHAT, exactly, did WE, THE PEOPLE get for it?

Wasn't it the RNC and Michael Steele that supported Scozzafava? and now he is coming out and stating that we need to adhere to conservative values and principles? The first thing he should do is step down and let a real conservative who has principles take over the RNC! And then the RNC has to start naming the RINOs, and removing all support from them. Michael Steele has already proving he bends whichever way he feels the wind is blowing - he is a politician, NOT a principled leader !! Do the RIGHT thing Mr. Steele, and remove yourself.

I’m 50, married only once to a great woman and a 4th generation family business steward, doing all I can with my brothers to keep our business viable and our company family of employees employed and strong.

I am very disappointed with the GOP and Republican Party as a whole for propping up weak candidates and running away from strong candidates by succumbing to PC fear and believing you can reason with unreasonable people. The current leadership should consider retirement or be ousted and replaced with strong, focused and ethical leaders.

One more thing; put the religious right in its place. The constitution was constructed to insure religious freedom. It does recognize a supreme being or power, the one that resides in each of us. It is religion that teaches us that we are less than, the same way our politicians tell us they know best. Religion is no different than every other special interest group, exclusionary and partisan. Faith and ethics is what holds everything together.

For the GOP and Republican party to thrive and be an organization where a message that ethical, honest, hard working people of any race or religion can believe in and be equal, it must take the bold step and expose and expel the actors and walk the talk with accountability not BS.

Sincerely

I want conservative values at each and every turn, less government, less intrusion, more fiscal responsibility, more honesty, ethics and respect for human life and dignity.

Not only did the "spin" doctors take the word abortion and change the title to "pro-choice", but now they will move you to elderly or infirm death by selling you that your children shouldn't have the burden of your illness and thus you are "free to choose" death over living. Just you wait and see how this will go and you won't even recognize it when it happens to you.

Sure, there are zealots everywhere, but no party is more exclusive than the democratic party when they refuse to incorporate those who wish to have conservative values and beliefs. They talk out of both sides of their mouths, day in and day out and for the benefit of themselves. The Republican party is sometimes no better, but I find more candidates in the Republican party that can pass muster. The Democrates always cave to Pelosi and vote party line.

They are a huge black hole of greed and power trying to suck out the life, money and values of every human being setting up themselves as the judge and juries of what you can and cannot do.

Be cautious, be aware and make a difference by voting for the right candidate, supporting them and getting off your butt and doing something instead of complaining day in and out.

And, yeah, yesterday while all those people went to Washington, Bella Pelosi called a vote so the legislators couldn't meet with their constituents....wonderfully inclusive that Pelosi, eh?

That is without a doubt the best written piece of psychobabble I have read in months. Not only is it a concise
delineation of the type of secular humanist pap that is responsible for the state of our current public educational system, but it demonstrates how that philosophy combined with an obvious lack of knowledge of our founding, our founding documents and history is both dangerous and all too common. I feel 40 IQ points dumber for having read it.

You almost had me at one point, but I'm too ashamed to say where. Our forefathers arrived here in the early 1600's to escape religious persecution, and 150+ years later, following the adoption of several compacts and other documents attempting to unify the people under one government, and still "clinging to our guns and religion", we fought a war with the mother country for our independence. The document known as "The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America", adopted July 3rd, 1776, is the document acknowledging the existence of a Supreme Being, referring to "... the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God ..." in the first paragraph and "the Protection of Divine Providence " in the last.

This acknowledgment is the basis for the system of ALL laws we have today which, after doing their due diligence, the founding fathers realized descend from the 10 Commandments.

The first 4 Commandments govern man's relationship with God. The last 6 govern man's relationships with other men. The importance of religion in our founding, and why you couldn't be more wrong when you attempt to minimize its importance, is that our founding documents acknowledge the Common Law and the fact our rights are given to us, by virtue of our very existence, by God. These basic Human rights are then reserved for the founders and 'willed' to us by the preamble to the Constitution: "...and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, ..."

Why is that important? Simply because, if your rights are granted to you as a member of the family of Man by God, then no GOVERNMENT can take them away from you. No other Constitution in the WORLD descends from the people as sovereigns who have all the rights given them by their GOD, and limits the powers of government.

Equally as important, our founding Fathers realized that, as a Christian nation, we would remain the beneficiaries of God's Divine Providence as long as we REMAINED a nation aware of it. Unfortunately, your attitude is the REAL problem, NOT RELIGION.

Paul: Additionally, you state: "Religion is no different than every other special interest group, exclusionary and partisan. Faith and ethics is what holds everything together." I would remind you that your faith, if it is Christian or Jewish (and others), is the foundation for your ethics ... you know, those last 6 Commandments? They are the building blocks of a strong, nuclear family, a good functioning society and the core of the concept of personal responsibility.

The need for our society to embrace religion has never, in my lifetime, been greater than now -- and I have more than a decade on you. Government clearly recognizes this because there has been a concerted effort to pervert (morph) "Freedom of Religion" to mean "Freedom FROM Religion" under the concept of 'separation of church and state', which appears NO WHERE in the Constitution. Our hypocritical leaders then open business with prayer in Congress, post the 10 Commandments on the doors leading to and the wall of the Supreme Court chamber -- and Moses, as the supreme law giver, is carved in relief on the facade on the front of the Supreme Court Building, with Socrates and Plato paying homage to him.

In short, I would encourage you to rethink your position because the facts are against you.

The REPUBLICAN platform MUST be kept simple and basic; it MUST be that of small, Constitutional government, fiscal conservatism, and personal responsibility and NO MORE!

If we are to restore our Republic, the platform we offer must be kept simple! KISS! Any expansion of the above platform only diminishes our constituency and provides more fronts from which our enemies can attack us. Enlarging the platform only muddles and waters down our message of "small, Constitutional government, fiscal conservatism, and personal responsibility". This platform will win! Enlarge it and the chances of winning diminish considerably.

I will not tolerate "business as usual" from the Republican hierarchy; that is, and has been, the problem! ... and our Country can not stand any more Rhino Republicanism.

No gay bashing, etc.. Gays are often very conservative, intelligent, creative, etc. and could be a great asset to restoring our Republic if we let them; get over the homophobia and make them welcome in the party. No pro-life and no pro-choice in the platform; those issues can be best dealt with later and at the appropriate level.

ALL of our efforts will be required to restore our Republic and roll back the encroachments in our liberties which BOTH parties have allowed to occur; both parties are at fault. To accomplish that end, we will need ALL the support we can muster and not just a few races.

The Republican platform itself should not include religious conservatism although it is understood that most conservatives have strong religious values and that the majority are Christian; many are not. Our country has been predominately Christian but our Constitution provides for freedom of religion (though not freedom from religion, a distinction that seems lost on most liberals and some conservatives, alike). I, myself, am a Deist as were some of our prominent founding fathers.

I respect an individuals right to their personal beliefs but actions based upon those beliefs must be subordinate to the Constitution when they affect others. The prominent, public display of a Christmas tree, unless someone actually sticks one in your yard, does not meet that test. The prominent, public display of the Ten Commandments also does not meet that test; being one of the oldest sets of laws, it is quite appropriate to display them in legal settings such as Courts of Law, as would be the "golden rule".

We CAN "fix" our Country but only if we ALL pull together. Pray that our efforts to restore our Republic, peacefully, are successful; the alternative is not one I care to contemplate.
