The Fat Lady's Not Singing in New York... Yet

Two weeks ago marked a turn in the Republican comeback. Running on conservative issues and against the anti-American socialist policies of Barack Obama, Republicans picked up the governorships in New Jersey and Virginia. Try as they might to dismiss the events, the Obama team was clearly sent a message: America is a conservative country, and it rejects your left-wing takeover.
New Jersey and Virginia were not the only focal points on Election Day. The special election in New York's 23rd congressional district pitted an unknown candidate representing the Conservative Party against his Democrat opponent. The so-called "Republican" candidate dropped out. Despite the fiasco brought about by the Republican Party establishment backing a candidate more liberal than the Democrat, Doug Hoffman (the conservative candidate) nearly won. But wait... perhaps Election Day really was a clean sweep for the conservative cause. It turns out that the NY-23 race is getting closer by the day, and Hoffman has unconceded his concession. Here are the details...

Does Zero Tolerance = Zero Common Sense?
Posted by Bobby Eberle

We all know times have changed. Back when I was in elementary school, a trip to the principal's office could mean a meeting with a big paddle. (Never for me, of course. I'm just giving an example.) My how things have changed. For fear of irate parents and crazy lawsuits, plus the injection of massive liberal "feel good" policies," schools began to cut back on discipline. The results came as no surprise: No discipline enforcement means poorer child behavior.
But have we now come full circle? Schools are adopting "zero tolerance" policies in order to take the guess work out of discipline. Rather than leaving it to the teacher or administrator to deem whether an incident warrants discipline, they just follow a script. Of course, when thinking and common sense are taken away from the equation, stupidity rules. Just look at what happened in Chicago to the kids involved in a food fight...

No More Career Politicians!

When the Founding Fathers came together to craft the Constitution, they brought with them many ideas in which America would be set apart from other nations. First and foremost, the power would reside in the people and not an all powerful king or all powerful government.
The government was divided into three branches so that power could be shared. In addition, the Founding Fathers believed in the notion of a "citizen legislator." The idea of a "career politician" was foreign to them. People were lawyers, or craftsmen, or farmers. They did not make a "living" from politics. As we have seen over the years, regardless of what party is in power... power corrupts. It's time to get rid of the career politician and bring back the citizen legislator. And... there is only one way to do this: a constitutional amendment.

Bridging the Racial Divide Takes a Bridge, not a Chainsaw

Just when you think that all is fine and dandy over at the Republican National Committee (RNC), GOP Chairman Michael Steele says something that really makes your head spin.
Remember when he was first elected? He did nothing for bringing Republicans together with his cheap shots against the conservative base or his comments directed at Rush Limbaugh. Then, this past week, following stunning election victories in New Jersey and Virginia, Steele talked about going after RINOs. I was impressed. Now, he's taken a step back again with yet another racial comment that makes Republicans cringe and wonder, "What is this guy thinking?"

Is the Republican Party Going RINO Hunting?
Posted by Bobby Eberle

For years the Republican Party has been a source of frustration for conservatives. Yes, the Republican Party is the vehicle to victory if conservatives want any chance of passing solid legislation, but too often that vehicle has an ejector seat. Only moderates, or RINOs (Republicans In Name Only), are allowed on board.
This week may have been the start of an awakening within the Republican Party leadership. I don't need to mention the conservative base, because we already know what we believe in. It's the "leaders" of our party who don't. However, after stunning gubernatorial wins in New Jersey and Virginia, and the near victory of a long-shot congressional candidate, establishment Republicans can no longer pretend that conservatism doesn't sell.

Written off by the Media, Republicans Win Big!

Remember the Republican Party? The party that the media and political pundits wrote off? They said the Republican Party was dead... that conservatism was dead.
In their rush to kiss Barack Obama's feet and proclaim that the United States is not a socialist country, the Democrats and members of the media forgot one thing: America is a conservative country. Americans simply want lower taxes, smaller deficits, more freedom, less spending, and less government control. Simple concepts, right? Well, last night, the message was heard around the country. In stunning election victories, Republicans picked up the governorships in both New Jersey and Virginia. The stage is certainly set for 2010 if the Republican leadership can learn from the results of Tuesday night.

Election Night: AP Calls NJ Gov Race for Republican; Republican Wins VA Gov

The big news so far... In New Jersey, the Associated Press is calling the governor's race for Republican challenger Chris Christie! In Virginia, all three top offices were won by Republicans. This is incredible!
Could this be the first fallout from Obama's efforts to "transform" America? Americans want good government, not a left-wing takeover.

Wow! Look What the Establishment 'Republican' Just Did

On Friday, I talked about the battle going on in the special election for New York's 23rd congressional district. More and more Republicans were coming out in support of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman despite the fact that the "Republican" in the race, Dede Scozzafava, had the support of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the likes of Newt Gingrich.
As with many things in politics, wait a few days, and everything changes. Not only is Scozzafava out of the race, but her follow-up endorsement should be a strong kick in the teeth to the NRCC, Gingrich, and anyone else who tried to sell us on the fact that she was a "Republican." Now, the real race is on!

Republican Leaders Seeing the Light and Going Conservative?
Posted by Bobby Eberle

There is something fascinating occurring in the state of New York. In a special election for the state's 23rd congressional district, some Republican leaders are bucking the Republican Party establishment and supporting the Conservative Party's candidate, Doug Hoffman.
Polls show Hoffman surging in these closing days. The election is on Tuesday. The Republican candidate -- the one supported by the establishment -- is more liberal than almost half of the Democrats in the state legislature. Rather than sticking up for conservative values, so-called Republican "leaders" have once again gone with a pick that doesn't represent the true Republican Party. Perhaps now, with some Republican office holders turning away from this approach and supporting the "true" Republican, we can send a message that conservative leadership is what America is looking for!

Candidate Puts Wallet Behind Term Limits Pledge
Posted by Bobby Eberle

In an age where politicians head to Washington as "citizen legislators" only to become transformed into career Beltway insiders, one candidate is putting his money where his mouth is regarding term limits.
Following the 1994 elections, congressional Republicans held true to their promise in the Contract with America to bring term limits up for a vote and many pledged to follow their own, self-imposed term limits. Some kept their pledges, others did not. But in North Carolina, congressional candidate Will Breazeale has made a $250,000 promise to the voters. In an age where so many people are frustrated with Washington politicians, maybe this is a move that could catch on.
