Democrats Pressure Washington Redskins to Change Name

By Bobby Eberle

Here we go again. Actually, it's an ongoing effect by those who embrace political correctness to the point way beyond stupidity. The Washington Redskins professional football team has been pressured by people and organizations for years who feel the use of the name "Redskins" is derogatory, offensive, insensitive, racist, and whatever other label you want to throw at it. Now, the Democrats are stepping up the attack as well.

As reported in The Hill, Democrats in the House of Representatives have introduced a bill that would "prevent the term 'Redskins' from being trademarked." Why, you ask? It's simple. These Democrats want the Washington Redskins to drop the name.

The Non-Disparagement of American Indians in Trademark Registrations Act of 2013 is co-sponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), and comes days after a federal trademark panel heard arguments over whether the team name was a slur. The panel could potentially overturn the team's trademark, which would erode profits by allowing other businesses to sell apparel and goods featuring the Redskins name.

Earlier this month, Norton said the team "should consider" a new name.

“Nobody would let a comparable name to blacks stand," Norton said, adding that she thinks the team will eventually be forced to make a change.

Here's the real problem. As noted in the story, there are "renewed calls in Washington politics and media for the team to change the name." But notice, the sentence specifies "Washington politics and media." Where's the public outcry. Let's listen... All I hear are crickets. That's because this is NO outcry.

All of these PC efforts are just ridiculous. The story also points out that numerous high school teams use the Redskins name. And these are coming under attack too. But it's not from local residents. It's from legal groups and left-wing organizations who want to tell the public how to think, and force teams to change all under threat of lawsuit.

To see how ridiculous this has become, just look at the oped in The Washington Post. The headline reads, "The Redskins name is really valuable, and really offensive. Here’s how to fix it." So, he says the name isn't just offensive, but it's "really" offensive. Wow... really? The only example the author cites is from another left-wing writer. That's hardly a plethora of evidence.

If people want change, they will demand it. It's as simple as that. Let the Washington Redskins be the Redskins. Let's move on to something more important like the budget, the debt, taxes, jobs, national security, or a host of other issues that are actually important.

I am a Native American and I think all of this nonsense about offensive names is so stupid. There have been the Cowboys and the Redskins for my whole life and I am 54. This is a stupid and idiotic waste of time, resources and money. Get on with life this piddly stuff has no bearing. Most of the people yammering about this are not even Native Americans. I am on the Cherokee tribal role and we as a tribe are alot more concerned about where we can put the next casino than the Washington Redskins name. Move on to something important.

I am half Lumbee Indian, and am astonished of how “stupid” this entire argument Is that American Indians should somehow be “insulted” over the name of a football team – really?

Every time I turn around, the Democrats (especially under this administration) and RINO’s continue to illustrate how they know nothing of American culture or how to “efficiently” use the taxpayers money.

As always – “stupid is as stupid does”…leave it to this administration to take the “butt kissing” propaganda to an all time high…

Well—I do declare! I’ve looked at all the comments & boy, are you all riled up! All over your precious football team. For all you half this & quarter that & foul mouth name callers, I suggest this. Since the dictionary (what do they know) says the term “Redskins” is racist, one very fair solution would be to just spread the problem around, as the chief dummy would say (dang, now you’ve got me doing it) and change the name of the team every quarter to a different racist name. Starting the next quarter it could be the Wops, then the Spics, then the Pollocks, then the (not going to get me here)”N” word, & so on & so forth. Everyone could be targeted & have equal opportunity as all of us belong to one racial group or the other. Is that fair or what?

Also, how about a little sporting bet(s) here, especially with you half this & quarter that? Let us go out to Washington state, up near the Canada border, to a little Blackfoot reservation there. I’ll make a bet with each of you that if you go onto the reservation overnight & call every Blackfoot you see a “Redskin”, when you get back I’ll give you the money we bet. But before you go in you leave your bet with a mutual person & if you don’t return, I get your money. I could get rich doing this!

I never thought I’d be agreeing with the Dims on anything soon but on this one they are right. You football fans can squeal all you want but you are totally wrong in this matter. The really sad part of it is that the persons claiming blood connection either do not understand the historical context of this conversation or they, like the vast majority of the Native American population, are ashamed of their heritage or are simply to beaten down to care.

Shame on you all. You should know better.

Obviously you’ve well named yourself Hillbilly. The point is not about OUR precious football team (your term) but the fact that PC wonks and jerks with nothing better to do than try to stir up trouble and start an argument stick their nose in something that is none of their business (unless they play for or own the team) and no one has asked for their opinion on, get on their high horse and decide to search out something that is offensive to them and therefore because they got their sensibilities bruised and their backs up everyone is supposed to toe the line, live their lives the way you decide and do what they are told.

I don’t know what dictionary you‘ve read that says that Redskins is racist when referring to the team (which is what we were commenting on) who have named themselves that and I doubt that they had a racial term in mind when they did, who have had the name for years and they don’t seem to have any problem with it.

I do see that you have no problem with calling people insulting terms such as “dims” so I guess you’ve excused yourself from the very subject that you have gone out of your way to act superior about and insult people over.

Now the term Hillbilly is generally taken to mean some gap toothed, ignorant jerk living in the backwoods somewhere making “shine”, so you’ve demonstrated that you use a truly demeaning term when referring to yourself. Don’t you feel that you should change your handle to something less controversal?

Since Redskin in this context refers to American Indians, the Washington American Indians would be accurate the Washington Native Americans would not be but the Washington Indigenous Americans would.

None of them have the same sense of loyalty for their fans as the Washington Redskins, if that hurts your feelings don’t support them or get a life.

It is highly doubtful the Democrat Party will ever get back to any level of sanity.

They are over run by progressives, marxists, and alinskyites. They haven’t passed a budget in the Senate since April 29, 2009. That’s 1422 days or 3 years, 10 months, 21 days.

How in anyone’s mind is that considered good governance?

If they are to get credit for anything, it’s they have figured out how to relate to the dumbed down populous their public education system has created. They don’t ever solve problems, they figure out ways to get those dumbed down masses to believe they are doing something, and when you have almost 50% of the population standing there with there hands out, looking for cookies, you have figured out how to maintain lifelong power, while never accomplishing anything.

    This is just another example.

Your use of terms such as progressives, marxists, and alinskyites, you probably do not know what the things they do for mankind. While we are at it tell me one thing that the Republican party has done for the working people, they are more into making the wealthy wealthier and the poor poorer. If you do not believe it look at the the economy You can blame Obama and the Democrats for that but before you do type into your browser the economy Sept 2008 and it will show you what Obama inherited from the Republican administration plus two unnecessary wars.. Obama received no help from across the aisle. Obama tried to get a bill to repair our infrastructure and was shot down by “King Boehner.”

These democrats need a life. No wonder the country is in the shape it is today. All the democrats want to do is go around trying to make every minute issue “politically correct” instead of having the guts to tackle the really big issues, i.e., government spending, unemployment, etc.. Next thing you know they will be asking the Cardinals, Dolphins, Rams, Bears, Jaguars, and Seahawks to change their names because they are offensive to birds, fish and animals. Oh, and let’s not forget, the Giants and Titans should have to change their names because they are offensive to big people. And most importantly, they will want the California Angels to change their name because it offensive to God. What dribble these bleeding heart liberals spoon out. And the funny thing is that they really do expect people to listen to it and support their idiocy.

I mean with all the real problems we have in our nation they are outraged over the name of a football team.Sure sounds like someone needs to get a life doesn’t it.Seems every one wants to get in the game and dermand something how about us regular Americans demanding our represenatives actually get buisy and do the job they were elected to do and stop fooling with trivial matters like this. I can remember when the Dallas Cowboys were called “America’s Team” and they filled the stadium every game. Not one single cow puncher was insulted. In fact they were proud to be called a Cowboy. And when they introduced the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders the ratings jumped 10 points. They were on TV more than any other team in the country (and now and then the cameras were pointed toward those big guys out in the pasture beating on each other).

But that was back in the day when we feared the Cold War would erupt in mushroom shaped clouds and such minor diversions as the names of sports teams weren’t paid much attention.

Kinda says something about D. C. wasting our money doesn’t it?

      What? Me worry?

I have been a Washington Redskin’s fan since 1952! Do the Democrats have nothing more important to concern themselves than making idiotic attempts to change the name of a football team??? My Lord in Heaven! They give “Most Favored Nation” status to one of the biggest offenders of Human Rights in the world and they want Redskins to change their name because it is “VERY OFFENSIVE”. Lets vote to change the name of the Democrats to the Dumbo-crats….. O sorry that is “VERY OFFENSIVE” to the Pachyderm nations. How humiliating! Just how long are people going to be led by their nose ring. WAKE UP PEOPLE! PLEASE.

The Cowboys always fought the Indians and so that’s shameful. The Patriots promote pride in U.S. exceptionalism which thus belittles other nationalities. Guess we can’t win for losing! Of course, the term “Democrat” came about as those in France who were against the aristocrats. Hmmmm??? Sounds like they haven’t changed much. They still steal from workers and give to shirkers.

I’ve always been told by Liberals that the term “Indian” when NOT referring to someone from India is Racist and Offensive! We are supposed to use the phrase “Native Americans”. Gee…Democrats come up with a Bill to supposedly protect the feelings of a certain group of people. And they insult these very same people in the title of their bill! And the NCUA has been pressuring the University of North Dakota to change their team name to something other than the ‘Fighting Sioux’. The kicker is that the Sioux Indians DON’T want to have the name changed and even had this fact put through the legislature as law. The NCUA simply didn’t care and threated sanctions against the team unless they change. If the team wants it, the people who the team is named after want it, leave it alone.

Actually, this is just symptomatic of what the great communalists want to do to the country as a whole in every area. Do remember that at present, we have a 1st Amendment which keeps the government from controlling our dialog. Once “Congress” can dictate what words we may and may not use in that speech, the rights and freedoms that amendment was intended to secure are null and void. Remember Hiakawa’s addage that “He who controls the semantic controls the argument.” Controlling what is and is not “permissible” language gives up the possibility of discussion.

Why don’t they just call them the Washington Rednecks? Dems don’t mind offending that term. Actually the term “rednecks” came from several hundred years ago by a defiant bunch of Scottish people that wore red bandanas around their necks to show solidarity against the British. It was later revived during the Revolutionary war for the same reason. The Patriots may have a cow, but just make sure that the patriot they have as a Redneck has a red bandana.

What a fantastic opportunity for some tribe like the Apaches or the Cherokee to step in to ofter their name to the redskins. The team wouldn’t have to change their emblems and other logos. I was disappointed Stanford wasn’t a little more creative in their efforts when they abandoned the name the Stanford Indians. I can’t imagine any tribe or its smarter members would object to a name honoring their tribe by one the country’s foremost universities, particularly if the name went with a scholarship for one of the tribe’s better students.

I think the time has come to move on and to state that every citizen enjoys exactly the same rights, protections and obligations. Let us consider reservations as corporations similar to family farms and get government out of reservation management and affairs.

A response to the Comment by hillbilly:
First, you do a dis-service to the term ‘Hillbilly.” Second, Wops is a term used to define ‘people without papers’ which was an accurate term at the time, and is not a ‘slur.’ Being Polish or Italians is not a “race”…. they are still Caucasians as a whole. Mexicans are not a race, either, as they are an ethnic group, like Caucasians are.

Technically, the term ‘Native Americans’ in reference to “American Indians” is not correct; if you were born in America you are a Native American.

SUMITCH, son-of-a-gun, dang if you aren’t right. I did miss the point. I thought the point was that the Nation’s football team had a racist name & the democrats were trying to get them to drop it. Boy, did I miss that one or what? Perhaps part of my problem is that, being a conservative, it is very awkward arguing in favor of anything the democrats are doing. And I knew you were out there, waiting to pounce, so I also knew I would pay a price for my position, right or wrong.
Now my little Merriam-Webster dictionary is rather small & has been watered down quite a bit, but it still says on page 987, redskin, American Indian, “usually taken to be offensive”. Now I wonder what that means? Dang, it is amazing how history is not only being made as we communicate but it is being rewritten by the liberals almost as fast. Not long ago, the same folks said it was out & out a racist term. But I truly believe if you try you can still find that reference.
Also, you are completely right about me referring to democrats as “dims”. And you didn’t mention it but I referred to the President as “dummy in chief”. I am sorry I used those terms. I know better & could offer various reasons or excuses but the bottom line is I was wrong.
However, concerning your comments about being a Hillbilly, I take grave exception to your statements about that. Someone once said it is better to be quiet & thought a fool than to open your mouth & remove all doubt. You just proved the wisdom of that statement.
It all began about 400 years ago when the Scots immigrated to Ireland, settling in the Northeastern area. The Irish didn’t like them since they tended to like to live in the hilly areas & stay apart from the Irish. So they started calling them “hillbillies”. After about 100 years the Scots had enough & moved on to America. Most of my folks arrived in Lancaster PA in 1690, settled there first then my great, great, great grandparents moved south to the Waxhaw Indian settlement area of North Carolina where they were at when the Revolutionary War began. According to history, the War wasn’t going that well until the British came into the hills. That’s when the “hillbillies” began kicking a– & taking names. This event turned the tide of the War
Now I could go on & on about hillbillies & their hundreds of years of achievement that contributed greatly to our national identity, but you can get that on the History channel. Hillbillies have served as President, congressmen, justices, & every office that can be held. My own ancestors fought in every war we ever had. Billy Ray Cyrus (a fellow hillbilly) narrated a 90 minute History Channel presentation on “The Hillbilly, the True Story”, where you can bone up if you want.
So, the bottom line is I am a hillbilly & proud of it. You probably are too & don’t even know it. Most people of Scot ancestry are hillbillies but many others are also. However, the general perception of hillbillies you mentioned is correct & held by folks who don’t know any better. And I do live on the side of a hill, 30 miles west of the White House.
