Does Barack Obama believe in free speech?

By Bobby Eberle

One would think that the president of the United States... the globe's appointed leader of the "free" world... would believe in free speech. Right? After all, our Constitution was amended precisely so that there would be no doubt on the importance of free speech. And yet, in Barack Obama's speech at the United Nations, he said the future does not belong to those who "slander the prophet of Islam." Oh really?

Yes, that's what Barack Obama said. In a speech spanning some 4,000 words, Obama hit on a number of topics. He started off by talking about murdered U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. He called the attacks against U.S. civilians an attack "on America." But he did not call it a terrorist act. He then drifted off into talk of peace and hope and diplomacy... knowing full well that radical Islamic terrorists do not seek out any of the above.

As Dan Gainor points out in an opinion piece on Fox News, later in the speech, Obama said something that should send a chill down the spine of any one who was listening. Unfortunately, none of the so-called mainstream media outlets chose to cover it:

The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country's resources -- it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs, the workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the women and men that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.

The key line, of course is: The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. And why not? As Erick Erickson points out in his column:

It is an orthodox Christian belief that Mohammed is not a prophet. Actual Christians, as opposed to many of the supposed Christians put up by the mainstream media, believe that Christ is the only way to salvation. Believing that is slandering Mohammed. That's just a fact.

So is Obama blasting Christians? Not necessarily, but there is no doubt that he was particularly focusing on Islam with his remarks, and then... to be cute and all encompassing, he throws Christianity and the Holocaust in there too.

But our own president of the United States misses the entire point! Is it offensive to see some painting of Jesus with someone urinating on Him? YES! But that leads to the two real points that Obama either can't grasp or won't admit:

1. That people have a RIGHT to be offensive. It is free speech. An American ideal that should be defended by Obama and all presidents.

2. That because someone is offended, does not give them a pass to kill people. How many offensive cartoons, sculptures, paintings, plays, skits, television shows, bill boards... you name it... are offensive to Christians and Christianity? TONS! Yet how many diplomats and public servants are getting murdered over them? NONE!

Obama says that we should not exercise free speech? And the media are silent over this? Of anything said during, Obama's speech, this IS the key sound bite.

As pointed out by the Heritage Foundation, instead of defending free speech, Obama gave a hint at the need to police free speech:

President Obama spent less time defending free speech than he did outlining a vague vision for a world with tolerance and diversity as its key ideals. Perhaps this lopsided emphasis sought to reinforce the administration's dubious claim that only hateful speech is to blame for the attacks on our embassies, but the overall effect was to lend credibility to the notion that governments should be policing speech.

Where are the questions from the media? Does Barack Obama believe in free speech? Does he believe someone has the right to make an offensive Internet video? Or... as he said, does he believe that the "future" does not belong to those who "slander the prophet of Islam?" I'd really like to know.

Ozero for the time being has to tolerate ‘free speech’ and as to his belief’s: he is a socialist / marxist. Pure and simple: Born and bred. His ideaology is to make America a third world power and in this first term he has done a spectacular job. He would be able to complete the job if given a reelection. The danger of this man is his resistance to the constitutional concept of this country and if he [by executive orders] can navigate around the constitution and Congress, he will succeed.

First let me state that I intend to vote for Romney. Haveing said that people need to read and find out for themselves what people say. This is just a tiny snippet of what obama said. Believe you me I am not an obama fan but fair is fair. Go Google his speach to the UN u will read this just as I did.
      _____________________________________________________________

I know there are some who ask why we don’t just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech. Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. Moreover, as President of our country, and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so. Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views – even views that we disagree with.

We do so not because we support hateful speech, but because our Founders understood that without such protections, the capacity of each individual to express their own views, and practice their own faith, may be threatened. We do so because in a diverse society, efforts to restrict speech can become a tool to silence critics, or oppress minorities. We do so because given the power of faith in our lives, and the passion that religious differences can inflame, the strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech – the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy, and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect.

So after reading this, presumeing he is being honest in what he is saying I can only surmise he does believe in free speach.
      Deborah.

What the hell was he talking about? Did anyone slander the “prophet of Islam” other than the producer of that stupid movie that hardly anyone saw? When he dares to say the future does not belong to those who would slander Israel then he might have some credibility as a President who stands up for America.

That was simply and excuse the radical muslims used for killing Americans on 9/11. Incidentally, ther is no such thing as a moderate muslim. They are all radical. They are either muslims or they are not.

Obama doesn’t want a terror attack on his watch especially while he’s campaigning so that’s why he’s using this movie as an excuse for his ineptness. He refuses to recognize any act of terror which is why they change the names to”overseas contingency operation”, “man made disasters” and in the case of Ft.Hood and Major Hisan,”Work place violence.” They are all acts of terror and the war on terror is still on. Obama hates America and like you said wants us to be a third rate power.

This is exactly what he said taken directly from his speach.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. Yet to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see when the image of Jesus Christ is desecrated, churches are destroyed, or the Holocaust is denied. Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims, and Shiite pilgrims. It is time to heed the words of Gandhi: “Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.” Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies, and that is the vision we will support.

What I get out of that is that all intollerance is intolerable.

Debra I believe you are stating things about Obama and Romney that are not true. First there is no facts about Obama being Muslim however I am concerned about his constant support of Islam as a religion of peace its doctrine clearly influences the radical terrorist of Islam with little responce from the peaceful members of thier religion. Is thier religion more important than the loss of innocent lives all around the World? The only way Islam will ever work for Muslims is for the whole world to convert to Islam. Its own ambitions is to convert we infidels to a religion of force and intimidation of which will distroy individual freedom in the rest of world. I am 75 years old and have observed the growing world of Islam throughout the world and its need to expand from its base in Arab Nations. Most US politicians will not debate the growing threat they feel that if they can survive the temporary problem while they are in office let someone else take responsibility. This threat is not temporary it will not go away and our nation is in grave danger from appeasement which will never work and its time for our national leaders come to grips with terrorist Islam and its threat to peace. If peaceful Islam won’t solve it nothing else will. The new threat to world peace is Obamas and Clintons praising Eygpt and Libya’s so called Democracy by vote. The new leadership is know friend of Democracy as we know it and this is a new way for Arab Nations to try and gain monetary support we will distroy America and we want you to pay for it. So much for Obama.
As for Mitt Romney not liking comments about his Church I am also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and over the years I have heard bad comments by people outside our Church and it is certainly demeaning it has no effect on my love for this Church. Mitt Romney has endured many comments about his choice of religion and has stood by nobely and with great faith as to his support for our religion. Romney will make a great President and has shown in his campaign that he will be a President for all people and all religions. God Bless America, Trenton Spears

So how do you justify Christians in light of Gods’ word “There shall be no other gods in his presence”, as well as the false image issue

“I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods in My presence…”
This commandment is to be aware that the God of Israel exists absolutely and influences all events in the world and that the goal of the redemption from Egypt was to become His servants . It requires the acknowledgment of the single God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the denial of the existence of false gods .

“Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above…”
This prohibits the construction or fashioning of “idols” in the likeness of created things (beasts, fish, birds, people) and worshiping them (anachronism). It also prohibits making an image of the God of Israel for use in worship (see the incident of the golden calf).

The God of Islam and the God who we as Christians worship (whom they call Allah) is the same God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The role Jesus Christ plays in their religion is: They believe he was a prophet that he was born of a virgin, Mary. He performed miracles the same as we know. They do not believe he was crucified and resurrected as we do. They believe he ascended into heaven at the end of his life as a whole person just like Moses was. They do revere him as a very Holy man but they do not believe in his divinity or in the Trinity as we do.

They do believe at the end of the world he will come again to Judge the Living and the dead. This is a small bit of what I know but there is so much more. The fanatical Muslims have hijacked this religion for their own use to deceive the world.

As for Free Speech issues, I do believe that films, trailers, cartoons, etc. such as the one which stirred up this controversy belongs in the same category as yelling, “Fire!” in a crowded theater. It is apparent to all that attacks on Islam, perceived or otherwise, incite extreme violence and outrage among the Muslims of the world. Given the fact that Amercans were murdered as a result of such insults, would be sufficient evidence that such speech should NOT be protected. Of course, I would expect that similarly offensive content to which Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Mennonites, Amish, Latter Day Saints, et al. would object would NOT be protected either. And so it begins . . .

I got a question … does the Islam religion support and endorse gay and lesbian homosexuality? I think not. Considering that some Islamic countries punish such action by death, and cite the Quran as its basis.

    That being said …

I wonder if it is “okay” for a Muslim to exercise free speech against gay and lesbian conduct. Surely that would offend someone … I’d like to see Obama caught in the crossfire of those two groups and see how he’d “wiggle” out of it.

I’m curious how he thinks that him supporting that which goes against the Quran (and the Bible), but gets him votes is going to help with Islamic relations. There are parts of the Islamic religion that align with the Jewish and Christian religions.

Funny though, how he won’t support one, but will the other, despite claiming to be one and not the other … even when they both denounce the same thing.

Not very well stated … but do you see the ironic contradictions involved. He only “picks & chooses” “bits & pieces” as it serves his political agenda. He is a sellout to both America and to Christianity, as well as to Islam and the Quran as he promotes anti-Christian values even when they are also anti-Islam values.

Where was the president when rhetoric at Sunday’s Muslim Day Parade in NYC included anti-Semiticism, advocacy for limits on the First Amendment, and calls for an international law criminalizing “blasphemy”?

On Sunday, the president was seen on “60 Minutes” saying that he always knew the Middle East uprisings (which he vocally supports) would include “bumps in the road.”

“Bumps,” perhaps, such as the recent terrorist attacks on U.S. embassies, and the murders of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador and American servicemen?

Obama said on Sunday that the future doesn’t belong to those who “slander the prophet of Islam,” and it doesn’t belong to people who “steal a country’s resources.” Since he has gone out of his way to support, encourage and defend those who engage in Middle East uprisings, perhaps he thinks the future belongs to them.

Obama is a hypocrite. Some years ago the NEA funded a depiction of the Christian savior submerged in a bottle of urine. Then Virgin Mary was depicted with elephant dung…. Everyone let it slide…… You don’t see Christian s killing anyone after. Now the poor Muslims are offended by a movie on you tube and they go out and kill people because their God is more important than our freedom. Give me a break! These extremist religions have been the bane of civilization and serve nothing more to control a group of people over hocus pocus created by slick manipulators who wanted to control a small group of people thousands of years ago. People who subscribe to such ridiculous doctrines are gullible, credulous and more manipulated than the domestic cow being lead to slaughter. Lincoln stated “The world has never had a good definition of the word liberty, and the American people, just now, are in much need of one.” When it comes to religious bigotry, the First Amendment Lincoln couldn’t have been more prescient. Does a person have the liberty to depict religious symbols and characters in a denigrating light? Yes. They did it with the above two Christian examples but the Muslims kill people and Hussein Obama says The Future Must Not Belong To Those Who Slander The Prophet Of Islam” he turning his back and showing disrespect on the Americans who died and our law of fundamental freedom of speech

Whenever he speaks it is for self agrandisment. Lies mean nothing to him. He is totally detached from his responsibilities and couldn’t care less about them. Oblamer needs to “man-up” and accept responsibility for this terrorist attack. His State Dept was unprepared for this attack, but Barry has to accept responsibility for this. Now the question is what is he going to do about it. I understand the FBI went to Libya. But this is not a bank robbery. This is just further proof that BHO is inept and incompetent. He has to go! Perhaps you should educate yourselves on the Mormon religion prior to making any more comments. That religion was founded by a so-called “prophet” who said that Jesus visited him in 1823. Their religion also believes that followers can become “God” and rule over their own kingdom. So, all “Christians” are also slandering Mormons as well, correct???

I made a comment tonight to a friend that I should sue Obama since he has made me depressed and have anxiety attacks when I think of him being in the Whitehouse for 4 more years. I really would not sue anybody, but I sure do get a bad feeling when I think of how he is abusing his power to bring this country down and throw us Christians under the bus for Islam. I really get to anxiety when I think that there are so many people that still believes that he is God’s gift to our country. They can not seem to see that he has not done much of what he has promised and has made too many executive orders that hurts our economy and safety. Four more years for Barrack Obama that is the cry of the Democrats their loyalty is most disturbing and certainly misplaced. For many years we have supported our party of choice and we do it because we believe in those particular ideals that will be best for our nation and its citizens that is a good thing. However we have always believed that our party of choice would be defending the ideals of honesty, truthfulness and integrity. That is no longer the case in our elections the last 4 years win at all cost, remain in power no matter how this nation is being destroyed and we the people will suffer the consequences. I don’t want a President in office because he might be more likeable I want a President who loves the Ideals of the Founding Fathers and shares the principles of what this nation stands for a nation of fairness and respect for the religion of choice and campaigning with mutual respect for standards of truth. How much money is spent on lies and assumptions it is in the Billions and we the people have grown tired of the waste on campaigning supporting lies how many times have we heard from supporters of a particular candidate speak the lie first and hope the truth will not overshadow that lie.
What kind of nation will come out of the November 6th 2012 elections if Obama wins it will be more of the same false promises and I Obama fooled you once and I hope I can fool you again in November. You see Obama has more work to do and he doesn’t care about our Nation as we once were before socialism became his mission for our nation in 2008. Isn’t it time for someone to ask Obama are you a socialist and do you support the US Constitution he swore on the Bible when he was sworn in as the President of the United States. Can anyone say with honesty that he has lived up to the responsibility of defending the most basic document in the United States the Constitution? It is time for all patriots to rise up and make a stand against all foes foreign and domestic and restore the dignity of the office of the President of the United States by the most powerful weapon we have the ballot box. If you want more of the same vote for Obama if you want to restore our beloved Nation let us remember our obligations to our forefathers who gave us our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and an Independent Supreme Court, and a Nation of Free Men. If memory serves me correctly the oath that Obummer took when he was sworn in contains the phrase “to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the United States”. I doesn’t say ignore, circumvent, and apologize for the constitution of the United States, which is exactly what Obummer has been doing for the last 3.5 years. As far as I’m concerned his actions with regard to his oath is an impeachable offense.

Also what kind of hypocrite do we have here. He says ” The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.” Yet he has absolutely no problem taking a million dollar campaign contribution from Bill Maher who is one of the most vile individuals it has been my misfortune to encounter in my lifetime. This man (using the term man in it’s most general sense)is guilty of some of the most horrendous attacks on people of faith and on other religions of the world that I’ve ever heard. I would not be surprised to learn that Mymood I’manutjob took hate lessons from Maher. So I guess if you give some big bucks to Obummer you can say anything you want but woe to you if you say something he doesn’t like and don’t cough up the big bucks.

Nickster99, I respectfully disagree with your statement that the Muslim “Allah” is the same as the God of Abraham, our Christian God. If one is to believe in the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Son, Holy Spirit), it is impossible to conclude that Allah is our Holy God. Islam does not recognize the diety of Jesus Christ, and since they do not recognize Him as God, Allah cannot be our Holy Father. Islamists believe that at the end of time, Jesus will, in fact return to earth. But it is my understanding that they believe that He will then tell Christians that they’ve been wrong all along, and that they should’ve accepted the prophet Mohammad. That does not sound like the Christ I accepted as my Savior years ago. There is a vast chasm between Islam and Christianity. I wish Muslims no ill will, but at the same time, I will never believe that their Allah is the same sacred deity as my God.

Texas29: Looks like you are missing the whole point of my comment. Or you did’nt read it very well. In the beginning before Christ was born, before The Holy Spirit came down upon the heads of the people at Pentecost (including Jesus’ mother Mary and many other people). There was one God, the Father. The god of the old testament. This is the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Daniel and many other prophets. This is also the God of Islam. They just call him Allah. We call him God, Yahweh, Jehovah, Elohim or whatever. I said in my comment than Islam does NOT recognize the divinity of Christ. But they do recognize him as a great prophet. They also believe in the virgin birth. His mother Mary is also revered as a holy person in Islam. There is a great difference between Christianity and Islam I am not denying that. But if you read your history books on religion diligently you will see that my god, our God the father and Allah are the same. They do not believe Jesus was God’s son. That is what I am saying. You will not find it in the Bible because Islam came along many years after the Bible was written around the year 620 A.D.

I am not telling you what to believe or what God to believe in I am just saying what the Muslims believe. I do know a bit about the history of religions.

Being the “one God” does not mean someone of another religion who also believes in that “one God” is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The God of the old testament was, at that time in history the “one true God”. They believe that Abraham was the father and founder of their religion as do the Jews. And we as Christians do also but we follow the New Testament and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Christ’s death on the cross changed everything. But these people that turned to Islam werent satisfied with Christianity there was much fighting between themselves. So Mohammed supposedly had a dream and wrote the Quran and thought he received it word for word from “God”. I think he may have received it from Satan! I am just saying what they as Muslims believe!

Any person can take the Bible and steal a bunch of text from it and create their own new book and try to convince masses of people that ” hey I had a dream and god told me to tell all of you this. That I am correct and the rest of the world is wrong”. Just like when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Cathedral in Germany. He had an idea and though he was right and the reformation began!

Catholicism is the first and true Christian religion whether you want to believe it or not. All others were sprouted from Catholicism!

The Baptist faith originated from within the English Separatist movement. During the Protestant Reformation, the Church of England (Anglicans) separated from the Roman Catholic Church. There were some Christians who were not content with the achievements of the mainstream Protestant Reformation.[2][9] There also were Christians who were disappointed that the Church of England had not made corrections of what some considered to be errors and abuses. Of those most critical of the Church’s direction, some chose to stay and try to make constructive changes from within the Anglican Church. They became known as “Puritans” and are described by Gourley as cousins of the English Separatists. Others decided they must leave the Church because of their dissatisfaction and became known as the Separatists.[3]

Historians trace the earliest Baptist church back to 1609 in Amsterdam, with John Smyth as its pastor.[3] Even prior to that, in 1606, John Smyth, a Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge, had broken his ties with the Church of England. Reared in the Church of England, he became “Puritan, English Separatist, and then a Baptist Separatist,” and ended his days working with the Mennonites.[8]:23 He began meeting in England with 60–70 English Separatists, in the face of “great danger.”[10] The persecution of religious nonconformists in England led Smyth to go into exile in Amsterdam with fellow Separatists from the congregation he had gathered in Lincolnshire, separate from the established church (Anglican). Smyth and his lay supporter, Thomas Helwys, together with those they led, broke with the other English exiles because Smyth and Helways were convinced they should be baptized as believers. In 1609 Smyth first baptized himself and then baptized the others.[9][11]

See Baptists did sprout from The Anglican Church of England and The Anglican Church sprouted from The Catholic Church after “King Henry the 8th” divorced England from the Catholic Church because The Pope would not grant him a Divorce from one of his 6 wives!

I have nothing against Baptists I have a lot of Baptist friends! But Baptists DID NOT EXIST BEFORE CATHOLICISM! Jesus said to the Apostle Peter “you are my rock and upon my rock I shall build my church” And peter went to Rome to preach the Gospel of Jesus and became the first Pope before he died at the hands of the Roman Emperor Nero in 67 A.D.

Thanks for the many comments on freedom of speech and religion. I believe that most Americans are on the same page as to our First Admendment and Freedom of Religion. Most Muslims know that we as Americans have freedom in stating the expressions of our thoughts and voice. Most Muslims accept our great freedoms and understand that we have a Constitution to guarentee theses rights. No religious doctrine or believe can take away these rights this is not understood by the majority of Muslims in the world. How often do we hear that any comment or documentry against Islam is a automatic right to distroy property, kill innocent lives, cause disruptions in the process of peace. The Obama adminstration tried to blame the recent attacks on our Embassy’s on a very bad film. It may have been the trigger but it was not the gun that is always locked and loaded ready to explode at anytime any place. Most Americans understand that appeasement, apoligies and embargoes don’t work but yet Obama insists on maintaining this course of direction it will probably get him through the November,6th 2012 election and if he is re-elected through another four years. Obama will leave the problem to the next President. It is like a patient with cancer lets leave it alone and maybe it will cure its self Obama doesn’t want to lose the election with anymore incidents like the burning of Embassies. This is not leadership and the sooner Obama leaves office the safer the World and America will be. This election not only effects Americans it will involve the whole world. We cannot risk our nation because we have a likeable President that does things that will distroy liberty and freedom.
