Students Defy Principal, Sing God Bless the USA

By Bobby Eberle

The students could not be denied! Remember the story of the principal who banned the singing of "God Bless the USA" at the children's graduation ceremony? The principal says the song is still not going to be included, but the children held a rally outside the school and sang the song anyway.

On June 11, I wrote about Greta Hawkins, the principal at PS 90 elementary school in New York.

The New York Post is reporting that "Greta Hawkins, principal of PS 90, the Edna Cohen School, won't allow kindergartners to belt out the beloved Lee Greenwood ballad, also known as "Proud to be an American," at their moving-up ceremony.

Why? According to the NY Post, she "marched in" on a rehearsal of the program, told the teachers to pull the song from the line-up, and said, "We don't want to offend other cultures."

Hawkins also told the Department of Education that she found the lyrics "too grown up" for 5-year-olds. That's interesting consider that the Justin Bieber song "Baby" was originally on the program. It contains the line, "Are we an item? Girl, quit playing."

Now, Fox News reports that the children held a rally in which they sang "God Bless America." According to the report, the principal was not swayed and continues to ban the song from graduation.

Unfortunately... this isn't the full story. The children were not even able to sing their song in peace. As Todd Starnes reports, hecklers showed up and shouted during the children's performance.

“You Republicans come go to a Republican area and do that, we don’t do that here,” one of the hecklers said. “This is ridiculous, this is sad. This is so crazy. This is sad.”

A Turner staffer can be heard off camera asking the protesters to stop – and to “let the kids sing.”

“The kids don’t even know what they’re singing,” the unidentified protester replied. “They got something you tell them to say. It’s ridiculous. It’s sad, sad, sad. You all are going to burn in hell. You all burn in hell. Shame on you. Shame on you.”

At one point, a tattooed protester cursed.

“You got a right to make noise, I got a right to make noise,” the protester said.

Isn't there something that can be done? This principal is clearly a bad influence on the minds of these children. The protesters are even more pathetic! Any American who feels it's wrong to sing "God Bless the USA" has a screw loose. What's going on in this country?

Greta Hawkins and all of her ilk need not go away angry but just go away ,,,,,,Folks it is either Lee Greenwood and “God Bless the USA” or Reverend Wright/Obama and “god Damn the USA”,,,It’s either Lee Greenwood “I’m proud to be an American” or Michelle Obama ““For the First Time in My Adult Lifetime, I’m Really Proud of My Country” after dwelling in the land of American Hate for 40 years.

Just what in the world were we thinking when we placed these inane liberals in charge of our country and in charge of developing the minds of our American School Children, many of which know more about loving America and what it really stands for than the Liberal Progressive adults whose hate for self and America is apparent. And we wonder why our education and political systems end up growing up children in adult bodies who hate America and really hate themselves because they know they are not pulling their weight in society and will never leave their country a better place for having known them. “And a little child shall lead them” or a gaggle of enlightened singing children who show us adults how to defy the oppression of those who would deny us our freedom of speech just as our forefathers did in 1776. Let the real American adults have their say in November and allow God to again bless the USA.

Uh, when it become a Republican issue? Only Republicans sing that song? Anybody notice that these are 5 year olds. Most 5 year old can barely say “Republican” never mind know what it means.

Also when did we stop being the United States of America and become the Democratic States of America?

As for the different “cultures”, it should come down to are you or are you not a citizen of this nation? If not, then shut up, because this is our country.

I attended NYC public schools in the 50′s. My 6th grade class was taught by Mrs. Rudolph. Every morning we stood, recited the pledge of allegiance, sang a patriotic song, and finished with “Dixie”. Mrs. Rudolph was certain the south would rise again. We never objected.

Our neighborhood was predominatly Italian and Jewish. We honored all holidays, of any ethniticity, in our school. Even celebrations held at our churches were attended by classmates of opposite faiths. We never were taught they were wrong and we were right.

My grandparents immigrated to America and taught their children they were Americans first. Italian was not spoken in the home, only the old people spoke it when they came to visit. We were taught customs, traditions and pride in our heritage but…first and foremost we were AMERICAN’s.

In our schools we were taught all of the patriotic songs and therefore did not need a song book to proudly sing them. It is a shame now most children do not know them.

For a moment, let us all travel back to the days after 9/11. All American’s (left, right, middle, etc) banded together and showed pride in America. You saw banners, signs, wearing of the red, white, and blue where ever you went. The silent majority came out to celebrate our unity. Now the loud minority is all we hear about.

Our president is making decisions like a dictator. Where is our Congress when we need them to defend the people? We are not against immigration only “illegal” immigration. There are people, waiting in line, to legally immigrate to America.

The children, who sang, were very brave to stand for what they believed in and their principal should not ban their chosen songs from their graduation. If she had not made an issue it would have not come to this. As for the offended, let them wear earplugs or not attend the ceremony. It is a public ceremony held in AMERICA.

For some reason, after the 3rd grade, I had to attend summer school in California, no less (1950s), our teacher undertook to teach us Patriotic songs, America the Beautiful and most of the others. She also included other songs such as the Happy Wanderer. It was the most fun and enriching stretch of schooling I ever attended in over 17 yrs of schooling.

If we want our rights we’re going to have to exercise them. Muscles atrophy when not in use, the same for our rights. If our rights are not exercised they Atrophy, shrivel up and handicap us. The parents and children, during the program, need to all stand up and sing the song regardless of the principle. What can the principle do, except try to stop them but they should exercise their rights and finish the song. Can’t punish everybody without causing a major incident.

Which reminds me that the Boy Scouts of America is again being attacked from the gay front and are now re-evaluating their stance because of a 275,000 person petition. Grassfire is trying to match that petition with at least the same amount of names, having 50,000 now.

Our rights are our rights to exercise, not rights to take away because groups don’t agree with us or are somehow offended. What cultures, in America, could be offended by the song? The leftist Socialists trying to take over this country. It is our duty to fight and overcome them.

How about the right to earn and keep your own honest wealth and private property and be left alone by an oppressive government who intervenes at every turn to change your God intended outcome to their government manipulated outcome that only favors them. How about the right to worship wherever you want to and speak or sing whatever you want to and pass your successful heritage on to your children in though word and deeds. How about our hard earned labor which represents our Life, Lifeblood and limited time on this earth that is stolen and redistributed along with our Liberty and happiness by a bunch of wealth and soul consuming secular socialists who could not create or sustain themselves in the real world of competition if their lives depended on it,,,,among whose ranks you apparently now reside.

Nobody is trying to “ban” religion. Not everyone in this country is Chriatian and times are changing. There is more diversity in classrooms and schools are right to recognize that. Religion is a personal choice. You haven’t been told you can’t worship. The principle is absolutely right in banning that song. I don’t understand what the harm is in singing something else? There’s none. But there is harm in forcing people to sing about a God that they may not believe. Don’t believe me? How would many of you feel if your child were encouraged to sing a song about Allah? So many of you feel perfectly fine about religion in school, but only if it’s YOUR religion. That doesn’t make sense and is NOT what this country was founded on. Religion Doesn’t belong in school, period.

The left is no longer a different view, of how we should live – they are a threat to this country… and they now have a leader.

Please don’t use freedom of speech as the reason. Do you believe tye children always have the right to say and do what they want in school and have it protected by freedom of speech? Of course not. Maybe most of the kids did want to sing but what about the children who don’t subscribe to those beliefs? Should they feel excluded and alienated? No, absolutely not. Religion needs to be left out of school. My guess would be that it wasn’t the kids making a stand as much as it was their parents encouraging them to do so. As for the children being heckled, that’s even more ridiculous. I can’t believe grown adults would say anything like that to children and they are absolutely wrong for doing it. Just because I think the principal was right doesn’t mean I agree with the hecklers. They’re morons.

Of course, TV and other social media are poisoning these young minds. Did you forget what city these students reside in? New York City! These children were not born in 2011, but know about it. God has already stopped blessing the USA! Unfortunately, for us. We need Ron Paul and Ted Nugent to be more outspoken.

I have read the Constitution from the Preamble to the Bill of Rights, and do you know what I cannot find anywhere? I cannot find either the right or the guarantee to be free from being offended. There’s a reason for that. The Founding Fathers, who were a lot smarter than liberal elitists give them credit for, realized that in the aggressive experiment in liberty and freedom that they were undertaking, offense would be commonplace. Since each man is guaranteed the right to speak his mind, it is obvious that even men and women of good conscience would disagree with one another from time to time, sometimes vehemently so. After all, the things that are most important to us are the things we’re most likely to be offended about when our beliefs regarding them are challenged. Since no freedom from offense clause exists in the Constitution, we can safely say none was intended by the framers. Because this is true, the question of whether it “offends” someone is a moot point. Many of us are offended every day by what we see and hear, but that is the price you pay for living in freedom. As for the song mentioning God and offending the atheists, I say “So what?” If we use the logic that atheists are offended at the mention of God and therefore such mentions shouldn’t be made in public, then I submit that all atheists should be completely barred from commenting about God or His existence in the public square because I find their lack of faith in God offensive. Obviously we’re not going to do that, because it violates the right to free speech and assembly, but such an outcome is certainly logical when measured against the atheists’ repeated calls for God to be eliminated from public mention. You have a right to your offense; no one says you can’t be offended. What the Constitution does do is prevent you from infringing on my rights because you’re offended. Get over it. I’m offended every day; I work to change those things I can legally, and learn to come to terms with those I cannot. The children singing a patriotic song that happens to mention God does not do irreparable harm to the children or to people listening to them. If you don’t like the song, don’t listen to it.

I’ll tell you what mandinm! Why don’t you do some research of your own and tell me how many foriegn countries can you move to or even better yet illegally enter and then tell them that their religious believes, laws, flag, constitution and bill of rights (if they have any) offend you. And let’s see how long it would take them to deport you, throw you in jail or execute you by beheading you just for basic principles.

Yes, we want people to have the same freedoms that our forefather’s fought for but not to infiltrate this great country legally or illegally and then tell us that what offends them and that we can’t sing, say or believe in a God!

You say no one is trying to ‘ban’ religion that’s a lie and you know it as well as I do. What the hell do you think is going on around us every day of our lives, schools no longer can have prayer or children can’t even have a bible, and God forbid you have a shirt with a religious insignia or wording. But, it’s ok to have every other filthy picture or insinuation of filthy comment and oh let’s not forget showing our young children how to put condoms on. And, one more thing! They have been for some time now forcing children to learn about islam and allah and to even pray to allah. Now get your head out or your hind region and either learn about what you’re talking about or how about move to iran, iraq, or better yet afganistan and let’s see how long you last there. Hey, better yet why not illegally enter Mexico and see how long it takes them to toss your a== in jail and throw away the key.

As far as I’m concerned each and every one of you that have a problem with what this country stands for can leave and give up your citizenship, because talk like this means you’re not an american!

The real haters are on the left. They are the BIGOTS in America. They are the ones who show no tolerance to anyone who disagrees. I can’t believe how ignorant you people are. You believe everything the left says. You people wont even admit when you hear things come out of Obama’s mouth that he said it. You won’t even believe your eye’s when you see Obama bow. Then you lie to defend Obama.

Obama just sealed the Fast and Furious papers. I bet you have an excuse for that too. The only reason he would do this. Is too hide his Jarrett’s and Holder’s involvement. people died. Butt… liberals don’t care because it wasn’t a black being killed by a white.

Oh, praireliving (sic), how deluded you are. There’s a big difference between *parents* bringing their children out to a protest to let them see how our system works for the people and by the people and children being brought to an intentional media circus to make a political statement.

Do you *honestly* believe teachers brought students out to the protests in Wisconsin against they or their parents’ will?

Poor onewildman! How unfortunate that you really don’t understand what’s going on. Of course I believe in the Constitution and will defend it against every threat. You claim to do the same, I’m sure. The difference, however, is you’ll defend it only when it serves your own interest while I’ll do it for not just my interest, but yours too.

When, nancj, did I say anything about being or not being proud to be an American? Since when is pride in my country necessary to be a citizen? Why, if I’m not proud, should I relocate? The kind of things you’re saying going beyond patriotism and well into the territory of blind and ignorant nationalism.

Hmmm. I smell a skunk! Frankly, these children singing patriotic songs is nowhere as offensive as those songs the children were forced to sing about His Highness Obama last year! He is not King nor God, and is definitely NOT patriotic.

It was those children who were being used to make a political statement and elevate Obama above being a president for the people, not these that were singing about patriotism. You need to get your facts straight and have better discernment between Patriotic songs and political messages.

How right you are. I have brought my children out to a protest twice in the last few months to let them learn how important it is to stand up for their rights and how our political system works. I took them in my own car, on our own time, and I was with them the whole time making sure that they were learning why we were there, what the issue was, and why it is important to us. The second protest we attend (in Denver no less) was not even covered by the local media so no way to suggest it was a “media circus” even though the topic was timely and critical.

Now, as for the media circus and the bringing of kids without their parents quite knowing the whole story. The truth is students were brought to Madison, WI by the bus load with the explanation to parents that they were going to visit the Capitol and then they were given signs to hold and they took part in the protests. I have a sibling who is a teacher in WI and this was what happened.

I have a couple siblings who are teachers so I’m not just relying on the media and if you really believe that no school ever brings kids to protest, never tells them what to think in a political issue then you really don’t have a clue what is going on in the education system today.

You’re wrong. It’s in the first amendment that people have the right to refrain from practicing a religion or have someone else’s religious rituals inflicted upon them in a public no religious setting. Last I checked, schools are (& should be) a tax funded non religious environment. Again I’ll ask, how would you guys feel if your child was singing about Allah? Mad would be my guess.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

Does this final version have the same effect of all the other proposals? Was it the intent that these clauses of the 1st Amendment the same as that of New Hampshire’s “no touching” proposal? Probably. Whereas in Europe, the “establishment of religion” did mean a state church, it took on a whole new meaning in America. Several attempts were made in several states to have and maintain official churches, but the multitude of denominations made it increasingly difficult to do so. If a state established the Congregationalist Church and required taxes be paid to it, it was not long before Lutherans or Baptists began to refuse to pay the tax. By the time the Constitution was ratified, several states had official state churches, but not official state denominations. In other words, a state would charter a church as it would a business today, but it would have no other formal role in the running of the church. Even that practice was waning, with only six states incorporating churches in any way by 1789. Clearly, the trend in church/state relations was towards no relationship at all.

In the end, the 1st Amendment not only prevents the establishment of a national religion, but it also prohibits government aid to any religion, even on an non-preferential basis, as well as protecting the right of the individual to choose to worship, or not, as he or she sees fit.

The Bill of Rights, however, had no effect on how a state treated its churches. Unlike today, the Bill of Rights applied only to the rules and laws of the federal government. The states were still free to establish churches, to direct church taxes be paid, and to even require attendance in church, all within the bounds of the state’s own constitution. As noted, many did. While the “free exercise” clause is undoubtedly referring to an individual right, the “establishment” clause refers to a state power. This clause not only prohibited the federal government from establishing a national religion, it prevented the federal government from forcing a state to disestablish any state religion.

Notice it says ‘CONGRESS’ and notice that the States are still free to establish according to their State Constitutions. Please don’t come here ‘educationally unarmed’.

Has Christianity been deemed the official religion of the state of New York? About deflection, I’ve asked the question on here 3 times without one single answer. Since you believe the principal has no right to tell the students what they can and can’t sing then a song about Allah would be appropriate if they wanted to sing it right? You would have no problem with your Christian child being told to sing it? You see, the problem is that “he right” only believe religion should be involved in schools if it’s the Christian religion. The “left” is busy defending every other religion other than Christianity. Both are annoying. Where is the party of common sense? Oh right, it just doesn’t exist.

      Mandinm:
If my child were asked to sing about Allah, I would remove him from the assembly, but that is not the point here. Look at the lyrics to the song. WHAT God is it? I see nothing in the lyrics that implicates that it is any particular God. It doesn’t mention Jesus, Allah, Buddah or anyone else. It just says God. I choose to sing that to the Christian God because that is who I believe in; however there is nothing inherent in the lyrics that makes it clear that the songwriter supported one god specifically over another. Therefore the children are free to sing it to whatever God they believe in, including the Christian God. As for a book of scientific myths, have you read Darwin’s “Origin of Species” lately? That book would have you believe that DNA, arguably the most complex construct in all of nature somehow evolved from nothing. Keep in mind that one human being’s DNA has an equivalent amount of information to that contained in 200 1000-page New York City telephone directories, and you want us to believe that incredibly complex and specific construct somehow happened by accident? Who’s practicing blind faith here?

First of all nobody forced those kids to sing the song. Second of all, as in the ‘pledge of allegiance’ nobody is forced to receipt it. Third of all it’s not a ‘religious’ song it it a patriotic song. Fourth of all it wasn’t made an ‘issue’ until the Principal stepped in. Fifth of all Islam is not a religion, it’s a theocracy. To Rich Money, the point is that God is in the song. That doesn’t respect an atheist point of view at all. All I am saying is that there’s a time & a place. if they sang about Allah, u would remove your child from the assembly. That’s one way to go about it. However, why should you have to do that? Your child has the right to participate and earned their right to be there. Why not just fight the school and say the song is inappropriate and have it removed? I happen to love the song. I was raised in a military family. I am more than proud of my country.
@ Genesal, I believe you have an inflated ego. It must be hard to carry that head around all day. Still didn’t answer whether you’d be happy to have your kid sing about Allah. Nice deflection, once again. And it is your opinion that Islam is a theocracy and not a religion.

Maybe we should take this up with “Mmm, Mmm, Mmmmmm – Barack Hussein Obama” Because those kids didn’t know what they were singing either.

If those parents are too embarassed to be Americans perhaps they should relocate.

Yes, who could forget that little example of liberal indoctrination of our youngest citizens? It’s probably going to take a new administration to put an end to that kind of brainwashing that goes on in the schools. Fortunately the students who defied that idiot principal were old enough to think for themselves and do what they thought was right.

They would be proud of their country and if you were LIVING there, you would have to ‘go with the flow’! What’s the old saying, “when in Rome do as the Romans do”??? Duh.

These bleeding heart, liberal, socialists are ruining our country…I don’t care if they’re Democrat, Republican, Pink with purple polka dots…a bleeding heart, liberal, socialist is just that!

@genesal, good reminder of what trolls are. The exchanges with ORJeff and mandi from NM were enlightening and yet not surprising. Whether I’m posting on national boards like this one and Townhall, or on our local e-fishwrapper forum, I refuse to engage a troll and give him/her what he/she wants; i.e., extra line space to keep convincing the audience of how vapid and empty the Democrat/liberal/Socialist/statist positions are. If these people were in your presence, they’d be shouting you down. There is no use wasting time with them and you’re sure as shootin’ not going to convince them to change their mind and see things your way.

To Mr. Etcheverry’s point (6/20 7:12 PM), if this “spontaneous” assembly outside the school was orchestrated by a Republican named Turner, the libs are probably upset that they didn’t think of it first.

I find it interesting these days in America when a person publicly professes his Christian faith (like a Tim Tebow) or displays a love of country and patriotism like these children did, they are scorned and labeled as “Republicans” by people on the left. I say to that, fantastic and thanks for the compliment. We like that label. I think it helps clarify the major difference between Democrats and Republicans when people head to the polls in November. The hate God, hate Christian, hate America crowd that has infiltrated and destroyed the democrat party must be completely removed from political power in this election cycle.

I am a native Oregonian who returned to Oregon after a 50 year absence to care for an aging mother. I found amazing changes and realized this is the one state where voters are no longer free to cast their ballots in secret. Every ballot is a mail-in ballot and thus the potential for election fraud is perhaps equivalent to that which occurred in Bell, CA where many city officials are now serving jail sentences. The public employee unions seem to control not only the economy, but also the elections. My second year back in this state I attended a open meeting by the school board in the city. The meeting was supposed to solicit citizen’s opinions about closing a neighborhood school. I sat through boring presentations by the teacher’s union and by a spokesperson for the handicapped until finally the board chairperson announced they had time for only one citizen to express an opinion. All the members of the State Education Board seem to be Minorities rather that a mix of citizens from all walks of life and I presume a similar bias is present throughout state government. My impression is that state employees have become like an occupying army raping the state’s resources for their own benefit, a mini-California,

Somehow public employees seem to think they should sit on both sides in compensation negotiations. Naturally, this has resulted in very handsome retirement compensation for those in all three branches of government as well as all the unionized state employees.

When I left the state the timber industry was thriving and when I returned it was struggling under increasing regulations. When I left there was a thriving fishing industry, but now the bays and river mouths are home to countless seals and sea lions gorging on those brave salmon trying to get upstream. Overall, it is a changed state and hopefully it won’t follow Greece and California into financial oblivion.

The principal is right in one respect…….Some people may find this song offensive. And you know what, thats a good thing! I think its high time we find out those people in our society who dont believe in our great country. That song says “God” bless the USA. That can be any god you choose to worship. So, if you find the concept of god blessing this country which was founded by people seeking freedom from religeous persecution, I would tell you that this is in fact a FREE country. Youre free to leave any time you feel youre not welcome or comfortable here. Feel free to move to some middle east **** hole and tell those people that their worship of god offends you and see how long your empty head remains attached to your body. As for the principal, if she is not a patriot and does not love this country, she has absolutely no business whatsoever teaching our children. Regardless of whatever education she may have, she simply lacks the moral fiber to be a propper role model, and she should be terminated immediately.

What this country needs is another Jerry Falwell. We need a strong leader to rally against the anti-religion actions that have led to banning prayers, the word ‘God’, Christmas displays and the hundreds of law suits from the communist ACLU and Freedom From Religion organizations.

Catholics have already begun to fight back with suits against Obamacare, but lack a strong leader to lead the charge. The real threat is to our Freedom of Religion and the right to exercise in public domains. With liberals now trying to ban songs such as God Bless America and suing schools for having any religious displays, elimination of crosses (goes on and on) we as a nation are losing our morale fabric that made us strong. The ACLU has used the false premise to redefine ‘Separation of Church and State’ and along with liberal judges have managed to force compliance to their anti-religion agenda. Enough is enough. We need to rise up and fight back to take back what made America great. There are no words in our constitution that imply Freedom from Religion…Freedom to exercise religion is expressed in our constitution, but ACLU has twisted its intention to ‘Freedom from Religion’. Our leader, Hussein Obama, has done nothing to thwart these anti-religion trends…in fact he has helped to perpetuate with his Marxist czars and appointments of far left judges.

If Obama is re-elected heaven help us. This guy is phony as hell and has fooled the American people long enough with his unfulfilled promises and lies and has taken our country downward with his deceit.

Those principals in New York are a liberal/progressive morons. They are afraid that the songs will offend other cultures? American culture is the only culture that those children will ever know. Yeah, the children will have their family’s culture if it is practiced at all, but American culture will always dominate and influence those children for their entire lives. The parents of the children who that principals are afraid to offend didn’t come to this country because they wanted their children to be citizens of their native countries; they want their children to be Americans. So, how could singing American patriotic songs be offensive if those parents of those children came to America to be Americans? The songs are only offensive to those silly, liberal/progressive principals because they hate what America stands for.

The children sang it anyway. And that is the way it will change. One by one, folks turning back to God, acknowledging Him as our only hope, seeking His blessing. Satan and his minions will do all they can to shout it down, but if enough Americans turn back to the one true God who gave us this nation, we will have national repentance. We will once again become a “shining city on a hill.” As Adams said, “Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people and is insufficient to the government of any other.”

The rights that thes radicals don’t believe in are the same ones that allow them to protest, though only real protesters use signs, etc. and don’t try to outdo others – also, if you don’t believe in the USA and what it stands for you are FREE to leave anytime you choose, “GO FOR IT”. When people come to America they need to either accept our way of life or go back from whence they came. If our songs offend them, they should not be here. I applaud those children for taking a stand for their country. The principle needs to leave or take some courses on America and why she should defend it.

Too bad thats not really what happened, those children did not rally against their principal, what happened was a republican congressman, Bob Turner, who doesn’t even represent that district saw a chance for some free publicity and so he showed up with his people, handed out free books and the lyrics to the song, because as Ms. Hawkins said from the beginning, the children had trouble with the words. Then he and his people asked the kids if they wanted to be on TV, which of course they did, and so he had a nic
e little staged songfest complete with someone holding up a Turner sign in the background the whole time.

Where in the Constitution does it say that there should be separation of Church and State? It doesn’t exist. The Left has become so paranoid at the mention of God that they want to ban his name from every public utterance. Educational institutions have failed to teach our children about the founding of this country and about the struggles to keep our freedom. Obama comes along and starts taking freedom away at every turn. It is time to put him to pasture and return some sanity to this great Country, USA.

You say you support the Constitution. I hope that is the U.S. Constitution.

You need to go back and read and our U.S. Constitution. No where in is does it say there is a separation of church and state. That is a fallacy. Here is what the first amendment actually says, which has been grossly misinterpreted.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
