Minnesota DFL reminded that all politics is local

The recent Special Election to fill the seat vacated by former Speaker of the House, Steve Sviggum gave the Republicans a breath a fresh air and a reminder that all elections are really local. There is no doubt that the Presidential and National Elections had some impact on the last go around where the House Republicans lost the majority, but winning this seat in which the Labor and Education Unions along with the DFL Party spent millions many have finally given the confidence the Republican’s need to get back in the right state of mind in Minnesota.
Star Tribune columnist Lori Sturdevant predicted a win for the DFL in the special election down in 28B tomorrow:Lori
An even bigger change just might be possible — or so say ordinarily sane observers of southeastern Minnesota politics. They whisper that this area just might elect a DFLer on Tuesday.

The Iraq war was said to be the issue then driving votes to the Dems. If anything, the war is making Minnesota voters more unhappy today. The other thing is the tragedy Wednesday night on Interstate Hwy. 35W in Minneapolis. Transportation adequacy and safety suddenly lurched to the top of every Minnesota list of legislative concerns.
On that issue, Drazkowski and Pfeilsticker offer voters a pronounced difference. Drazkowski is foursquare against an increase in the gas tax, or any tax for that matter. He’s content for the state to borrow more highway money, service the debt with existing taxes and invest about one-tenth the amount that road experts say is needed in the next 10 years to prevent further deterioration in Minnesotans’ mobility or safety.
Republican Steve Drazkowski defeated DFL candidate Linda Pfeilsticker 52.9 to 46.9 percent in a special election in House District 28B and was outspent by millions in a trending DFL seat which just happens to do well for Republicans when a candidate is honest, works hard and has the same core values of the district not the party leaders and special interests.
