Subpoenas issued to State, EPA ; GOP wants answers on Benghazi

By Washington Times (DC)

As they prepared to head home for summer vacation, House Republicans fired off three subpoenas Thursday seeking more information from the State Department on the terrorist attack last year in Benghazi, Libya, and on the science the Environmental Protection Agency used to impose new clean air regulations.

The parting shots come amid a week of bitter partisanship that saw both the House and Senate fail to pass transportation spending bills, and saw each side point the finger at the other in arguing that Congress is broken.

Tempers flared on the Senate floor as Republican Sen. Susan M. Collins of Maine pleaded, without success, for her GOP colleagues to let the spending process go forward on the Democrats' bills. Republican leaders, though, said the bills break the budget deal reached in 2011.

"We need to indicate we're going to keep our word around here," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, after the GOP filibustered to block the spending bill.

But his Democratic counterpart, Majority Leader Harry Reid, said the GOP has resorted to baseless obstruction.

"I don't know, everybody, what more the Republicans could do to tarnish their brand than what they're doing here in Washington," the Nevada Democrat said.

The subpoenas, meanwhile, draw the Obama administration into the acrimony.

Two of the requests come from House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa, California Republican, who has been investigating the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic post in Benghazi that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

One of his subpoenas calls for the State Department to turn over the records it shared with its own internal Accountability Review Board, an internal investigative effort which the GOP argues did not do enough to hold high-ranking officials responsible.

The other subpoena orders the administration to leave 25,000 pages of documents with the oversight committee. Currently, those documents are carted into Congress each day and then carted out at night in order to prevent lawmakers from having physical custody, House investigators said.

"State Department tactics to delay and impede accountability have exhausted the committee's patience," Mr. Issa said, warning that further subpoenas could follow.

State Department spokesman Alec Gerlach said department officials worked in good faith with Mr. Issa, and said they have made documents available throughout the committee's probe.

"For seven months, we've offered and provided access to specific documents at his request. I'm scratching my head trying to ascertain what practical value yet another Issa subpoena has in protecting our diplomats," Mr. Gerlach said.

He said the move to issue subpoenas was "a jarring juxtaposition" with the bipartisan effort in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday to pass a bill boosting embassy security in the wake of problems exposed in Benghazi.

Thursday's other subpoena came from House Science, Space and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, Texas Republican, who said it's been nearly two years since EPA promised to turn over the science it used to justify what Mr. Smith said were "costly" new regulations.

"The EPA should not base its regulations on secret data," Mr. Smith said. "The EPA's lack of cooperation contributes to the suspicion that the data sets do not support the agency's actions. The American people deserve all of the facts and have a right to know whether the EPA is using good science."

Mr. Smith said Gina McCarthy, who was then deputy administrator and has since been approved as EPA administrator, promised to turn over the science data in 2011, but that the agency has failed to do so.

It was the science committee's first subpoena in 21 years, Mr. Smith said.

Since taking control of the House in 2011, Republicans have repeatedly battled the administration to try to extract information.

They held Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in contempt of Congress for refusing to provide documents related to the botched Fast and Furious gun-walking operation.

Enlighten me somebody…when someone is held in “contempt of Congress” just what happens next to that person?…is he given a good conduct ribbon?…a slap on the wrist?…a free pass?…what

Also, if information asked for by Congress is not given to them, re:from the EPA…then what?

It seems there is a lot of saber rattling but no action following the vocal noises made…just more noise…someone enlighten me because if action has been taken then I guess I was asleep…if not, then it seems Obama and Reid are simply thumbing their noses at Boehner and Congress…maybe something is broken, like no male parts

Excellent summary of the nation’s status as of this instant. I too have wondered what’s next with the contempt of congress and the multiple nose thumbs coming from the white house (yes I believe they are following Obama’s instructions). Maybe the plan (ha ha) is to act like they don’t know nuttin’.

If congress isn’t in session at least they aren’t doing positive damage to the country as fast as normal. We’ve got that going for us, eh? Also, we are abandoning our embassies worldwide to show that no one better mess with us.

But what the hay? Things can’t be too bad. After all the vacation(s) weren’t interrupted. Anyone got a spare crying towel?

They need to issue a subpoena to the large @zz pant suit “What difference does it make” Clinton and haul her thunder thighs back in front of the Committee because she lied and all these liars should have an indictment for not telling the truth to Congress which needs to be a criminal charge with prison time attached.

LOL @ “thunder thighs” – despite some recent facial surgery, the years have not been kind to Hillary.

I fully agree that they should subpoena her and interrogate her in public. I am sure that she will lie and/or plead “national security” excuses for not revealing anything. That should be met with a charge of contempt of congress and/or perjury.

No. They are not listening. More “subpoenas” for more information? I thought, by now, they were going to hand a few papers to individuals.
My well worn pocket-size copy of The Constitution has no mention, that I am able to find,(I will take help here please), on how We The People impeach the entire lot of them. I can list the grounds on which to do it. However, the Founders offered no method.
Finally, “the science the Environmental Protection Agency,” a phrase within the above article is oxymoronic… The EPA is, in my opinion, one of the greatest generators of bogus science in the world. They have, in fact, by their acceptance and generation of quasi-science aided in destroying the Socratic method that once structured science and scientific method.
Lastly, who among us all, on these pages, has not taken a vacation because “we have work to do, work that must be done?”

The answers to both investigations are obvious.

Benghazi was Fast and Furious on steroids. Where F&F was limited to Ak-47s, Benghazi had far more pernicious weaponry at stake. The only question is whether appropriate evidence for impeachment, ne treason, can be established.

The EPA is not relying on any scientific evidence that can be proven. It is just one more ploy to destroy the USA by ‘regulation’. Again, it is by direction from above. He meant what he said in ‘Dreams from My Father’, the USA is the last imperialist power on the planet. Destroy it, get to its very heart.

And as others have said, what is the meaning of ‘contempt’> With no following action for penalizing, it is just a ‘feel good’.

No one seems to realize all organic and inorganic testing done when the EPA was started was done with pipette, furnace and XRF. Since that time Quantitative Analysis has moved from parts per thousand to parts per billion with ICPMS, GCMS and instruments with ever increasing sensitivity.

Bureaucrats at the EPA know full well the power of the press to make an issue where there is none and so have responded by continually lowering the amounts labeled harmful.

The problem is the EPA should be and should remain a testing agency concerned with organic and inorganic concentration, but leave it to other agencies and a health court to determine whether a ppb actually causes a health hazard.

It is appalling how Rep Issa ignores the greater questions regarding the Bengahzi affair… why has he not issued subpoenas to the CIA ordering them to produce the 30 or so agents present in Bengahzi at the time of the attack?

These agents need to be questioned as to what occurred and to ascertain if GUN RUNNING was occurring in Benghazi? If the Benghazi consulate was in fact engaged in furnishing arms to Islamic jihadist or Syrian insurgents it would be a major CRIMINAL ACT and we need to know who ordered such actions?

However, the GOP appears no to be interested in getting to the bottom of all the questions that remain unanswered regarding the Bengahzi incident… Why? Was there collusion or criminal culpability between members of Congress and the Adminsitration regarding Benghazi, arms deals, acts of war, etc? These questions and others like who ordered the ‘Stand Down’ remain unanswered and Congress appears unwilling to conduct the necessary ‘discovery’ too answer them.

      @jmikes1951 -

I couldn’t agree with you more. Only one minor problem. For the most part our “representative” (ha ha) congress isn’t going to do squat. “But you can vote them out if you don’t like them” we’re told. That’s a farce. The political parties manage the elections from the grass roots up to insure that very few get to the top of the pile without signing off on the unwritten, unspoken rules of theirs which is do anything to stay in office and keep in the job no matter what. The few that make it are only the ones that slipped through the cracks. I’d name the likes of Issa and Tom Coburn as examples to me. Maybe Cruz.

I’d hope to see some real house cleaning and cutting happen this next election but I very seriously doubt that I will. We’re dealing with the most corrupt administration in the history of the country and packed with Chicago type thugs, liberals and Muslims. Plus the 93% of the get whitey vote who will follow their Pied Piper when he commands them to support Hillary. Slick Willie will be in her corner too and probably Bloomberg plus who knows how many more of our titled rich?

The last elections were rigged with a full book of fraud via ACORN (now split up and renamed) and such as the Black Panthers. Nothing was done to the myriad laws broken by ACORN except that congress voted to not fund ACORN. So they just started the funding of the split up ACORN from a different government set of books and nothing has been done. Nothing was done AGAIN about the overseas military votes that mysteriously didn’t make it here or were lost.

I’m sure I’m not the only person that wrote my Senators and Representative before the last election to simply say “I hope you’re going to do something to stop the fraud that you must know is coming”. So Eric Holder via the Justice Department stopped any state from requiring picture ID as proof of who you are and also from cleaning the books of dead people, illegal aliens etc. Congress did nothing about it. We are being sued here in Texas over our requirements for voting even after being taken off the books as one of the states whose elections must be monitored by the Feds. Arizona is being sued by the same Feds for daring to try and enforce their border security with Mexico (naming them makes me a racist, I know) because the government won’t do it.

There are a few in congress that are trying to fix things to be in line with our constitution, but they are far outnumbered by those who will look the other way or outright fight them. Without our voting being on the up and up, it’s going to keep on happening. Note that I did not name a specific party because I think they’re both in it up to their knees.

I’m not very positive that we aren’t seeing the end of our Republic in any form that we’d recognize.

I yield the rest of my time to whoever wants it.

It is contrary to the national security of the United States to remain dependent on oil from our enemies.

Cap & Trade creates a trillion dollar market for politician’s only resource: hot air!

Carbon tax: Obama’s cronies (Solyndra, Fiskar, etc) get wealthy while citizens pay higher prices.

China has purchased the bankruptcies of Obama’s cronies for pennies on the dollar.

Carbon tax: Multi-national companies will export new construction and jobs to 3rd world non-subscribing countries?

Science question: Did Fred Flintstone’s fleet cause global warming in the age of dinosaurs?

The Earth experienced periods of global warming and cooling prior to the age of man!

Legitimate scientists suggest sun spot cycles have more to do with global climate change than all the works of man.

Shipping American coal and jobs to China does not reduce global warming! But it raises the price of electricity in America!

The EPA claims air is much cleaner than 70s. But growing the agency requires new windmills to tilt at.

Defund the EPA budget for educational grants to indoctrinate future generations the agency is necessary!

Regulations written by unelected bureaucracies are taxation without representation. Tell Congress to curb their cur dog!

Your talking points are well taken bendoublecrossed. If I may I can add a couple of facts about them. It is absolutely against the security of the United States to be so dependent on foreign countries for energy sources. One of the Reasons that Germany invaded Russia in WW II was to get their oil supplies. Day by day we spent billions on oil from countries whose only interest is with how much money of ours can they get? We have huge supplies of coal and oil that is untapped because of the farce of global climate change but not taking advantage of it by our PC advisors to lead the world in fixing the non expected problem(s). Tests have shown that the earth goes through climate changes approximately every 25,000 years and we are due for another.

There is no reliable empirical evidence to support these doom and gloom predictions, but facts have little value to the companies benefitting from our importation and want the scam to remain on the top burners. The data from the university that produced the report in England was based on incorrect base data forced into the calculations to prove their PC points.

Fact: More C02 emissions from last year’s volcanic eruptions had eliminated all of our national efforts.

Fact: Windmills are inherently inefficient, have huge maintenance costs and thereby raise the cost of electricity to consumers. A little know factoid is that electric generation plants using coal and gas must remain on line to use in case of wind field failures.

Fact: Cap and Trade are programs developed by Enron and I went through training courses to learn to work the derivatives and sell the concept. The concept was to set up carbon banks where energy credits would be purchased from companies that are under the carbon emissions quotas assigned to them and sold to companies that did not beat their quotas. This does not reduce global carbon emissions; it just transfers the OK to produce them to other companies. An aside is the aluminum producing companies that produce very little emissions as they use electricity to produce their products.

Fact: Companies such as Archer Daniels Midland are given government subsidies to produce ethanol for addition to gasoline making its real cost greater than reported. E15 is now allowed even though the government knows these facts. Corn prices and products using corn have risen at the grocery stores. A habit that is bad for automotive engines as they have not been produced to withstand the higher engine temperatures with blends with ethanol until the last few years. Killing off birds in the blades and the scavengers that eat them have produced dangerous situations as well as pissed off the Audubon society.

If we are going for a nation run on electricity all these points must be considered. The costs don’t even consider the costs of buying electric appliances to replace the gas using ones, adding more cost to the energy.

sumitch left out a few ‘inconvenient’ facts:

      1. Ethanol requires more energy to produce than it provides.

      2. Coal is a good source. Its only problem is the impurities it often contains. The simple answer is develop better scrubbers. A coal slurry was the original fuel for Otto’s diesel engine.

      3. CO2 is a natural byproduct of energy production, even human energy. You exhale CO2 with every breath you take. Of course, one solution to that fact, is ObamaCare death panels. Or, are we to be subject to ‘cap and trade’ for our respiration?

But what do ‘facts’ mean? We are ruled by a consortium of politicians, lawyers, and conmen. Excuse me, I am being redundant.
