Graham: IRS targeted Samaritan's Purse and Billy Graham Ministries

By Charlotte Observer (NC)

In a Tuesday letter to President Barack Obama, Franklin Graham charged that the two N.C. charities he leads were also targeted by the IRS for political reasons.

Graham, who heads both the Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Boone-based Samaritan's Purse, said in his letter that an IRS agent visited both organizations last October to conduct a review for the tax year ending in 2010.

This attention from the IRS came the same year the BGEA purchased full-page newspaper ads addressed to voters, Graham pointed out. In April, the group urged N.C. voters to approve a proposed constitutional amendment reaffirming the state ban on same-sex marriage. Then, during last fall's presidential campaign, another BGEA ad encouraged voters to cast their ballots "for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles."

Given the recent revelations about the IRS targeting conservative organizations with "Tea Party" and "Patriot" in their titles, Graham said in his letter that he now believes the IRS' reviews of the BGEA and Samaritan's Purse were part of the same effort to target conservative groups.

After the November election, the Graham-led charities were notified that the IRS had affirmed their tax-exempt status. But, before then, Graham said the organizations had to spend "precious resources" -- money contributed by donors for ministry purposes -- "servicing the IRS agents in our offices."

In his letter to the Democratic president, Graham, who has talked up GOP candidates in recent years, said: "I am bringing this to your attention because I believe that someone in the (Obama) administration was targeting and attempting to intimidate us. This is morally wrong and unethical -- indeed some would call it 'unAmerican.' "

Graham was traveling overseas Tuesday and was not available for comment.

A White House spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

This isn’t surprising either. The left is intent on dictatorial power, and any perceived or real opposition, regardless of source is suspect and to be eliminated.

Their definition of freedom is you are free to support our agendas, viewpoints, and policies. Freedom of speech, to praise and laud them. Citizens are not free to stray outside of these oppressive boundaries.

The Billy Graham group was clearly targeted in a discriminatory and unethically profiling manner. In addition, the subsequent cover-up seems unconscionable if not criminal. However. in my estimation, the ads the group ran were clearly political electioneering. The should not have received an apology, but should have been fined and possibly had their charitable status revoked. As usual the congress bears some blame for making the law so ambiguous or concocting the law in the first place.

Smilewinks…You are an idiot. It is not a crime to tell the people to vote their conscience and Biblical beliefs. Believe it or not, Christians should also be allowed free speech. You need to do a little research on what the IRS can or can not do because of things like this article states.

When the IRS targets the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, now that’s about as low as you can sink. I can’t think of a more respected and admired person in all of America than Dr. Graham, the nation’s pastor. Only a corrupt Chicago politician would even contemplate such a thing. I guess in Obama’s world, winning elections is everything…

It seems to me that being a “Community Organizer” is being a lot like Jesus.

Your point about ambiguous laws relating to tax exempt status is well taken. I would agree that these laws should either be enforced or repealed. I would venture to say that there was more politicking going on behind the church pulpits every Sunday during the last two presidential elections than in Washington DC. Someone needs to take a hard look at “all organizations” that receive that coveted status to determine if they have political agendas. I would start with NPR and Planned Parenthood!

I believe this is just a starting point for the intimidation of Christian organizations. We will hear more of this happening in the future if the organizations are not afraid to make it known. Obama and his minions in the WH will do anything to further his cause of socialism and the eradication of Christianity and Judaism. The nuts don’t fall far from the tree and his nuts are on the ground under his tree in reverent worshipful adoration of his devilish deeds. Look closely and you will see many people you thought were conservative in the group and most of the news media. He speaks and they rush to print and defend every word or thought he conveys. It does not matter if it is right or wrong. It matters only that they please him and get into his inner circle of small useful idiots to bask in the sunshine of his hypnotic smile.

And yet these Muslim charities, many who are merely front groups for terrorists, don’t get harassed by the IRS. I hate to tell the libs this, but homosexuals are stoned to death in Muslim countries. The right to marry is the least of their worries.

Some (psycho)analyst might diagnose his behavior as an inferiority complex but this is no complex; therefore an uninformed electorate voted him into office. As the flow raises all boats, he needs the ebb to lower them to his level. No President that I know of in my lifetime, that would start with Harry Truman, the one who took all of our bucks (The Buck Stops Here), would go against Billy Graham. I might disagree with him theologically, I am Lutheran and he his Baptist, but I respect him for what he has accomplished through his ministry. Dr. Carson got it right at the prayer breakfast except POTUS was ready to PREY. My thanks to Thomas Nast.

For being a Community Organizer, whatever that is (Democratspeak for stooge, goon, party ‘aparatchik’), nothing he has done seems organised. He is using the IRS as a tool against any who disagree with him, just as he is using every branch of government. A good man and what he stood, stands, and will stand for long after BHO’s ignorant abuse is forgotten.

The President might have the hubris and guts to say, “Well I brought Billy Graham to his knees!”
Yes, but those knees were bent in prayer. “Lord Jesus, shepherd of the flock, as you showed us the Father through yourself, show yourselt to one who has been lost, our brother Barach, and gently lead him that we all may rejoice that “He who lost is found.”!

WOW. I would love to see that happen. That would be wonderful. I pray that it will.
What a great wake up call that could be to the world…especially America if Barack Obama confessed that Jesus Christ was his Savior and he (potus) was going to try to fix everything he had ruined and follow Jesus. This time he would have to actually do what Christ taught to be believed by America. I do definitely pray to live to see that happen. WOW WOW WOW Bring it on Jesus!

I have returned to GOPUSA because commentors on other sites tried to justify IRS behavior, one had over 800 commentors. Not one suggested that Islamic and other beliefs be subjected to the same scrutiny, but they do live under a Judeo-Christian code which allows them to have their opinions, Qu’anic states would not permit that. Eliminate tax exempt status for all institutions, that way there is no favoratitism, that way a Christian holding up a Bible and an Islamic fanatic strapping a bomb on his young son and blowing him up in a crowd would be treated equally

Now the ring of truth sounds erie…a nonchristian president who doesn’t support christian ways has during his presidency of coservitive religous nonprofit organizations gets targeted by the IRS. An ignored atack on the Lybian Embassy which led to the murder of the ambasador there and three more which could have gotten help in a few hours. One more idiotic incident like this and we have a three ring circus! ( If not already)
