The World Mourns the Iron Lady; Margaret Thatcher Dead at 87

By Associated Press

LONDON - Global leaders expressed praise and admiration Monday for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as news spread of her death. Today's British leader, David Cameron, summed up the consensus from friend and foe alike that the Iron Lady was "a great Briton."

"As our first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher succeeded against all the odds," Cameron said in Madrid as he cut short a trip to Spain and canceled a visit to France to return home to lead funeral preparations for the longtime leader of his Conservative Party.

"The real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn't just lead our country, she saved our country," Cameron said, "and I believe she'll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister."

As flags across the United Kingdom were lowered to half mast, Buckingham Palace said Queen Elizabeth II would send a private message of sympathy to the Thatcher family.

Across Europe and the world, leaders lauded Thatcher for her steely determination to modernize Britain's industrial landscape - even at the cost of violent strikes and riots - and to stand beside the United States as the west triumphed in the Cold War versus the Soviet Union.

In Poland, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said his country should erect a statue of the British leader. In a tweet he praised Thatcher as "a fearless champion of liberty, stood up for captive nations, helped free world win the Cold War."

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who ousted the Conservatives from power seven years after Thatcher's resignation, conceded that Thatcher had been right to challenge labor union power - the traditional bedrock for Blair's own Labour Party.

"Very few leaders get to change not only the political landscape of their country but of the world. Margaret was such a leader. Her global impact was vast," said Blair, who credited Thatcher with being "immensely supportive" despite their opposing views on many issues.

"You could not disrespect her character or her contribution to Britain's national life," Blair said.

Discordant notes came from Northern Ireland and Argentina, where Thatcher's reputation for unbending determination received early tests - when breaking an Irish Republican Army prison hunger strike in 1981, then leading Britain into a 1982 war to reclaim the Falkland Islands from Argentine invaders.

Argentina's government offered no official reaction, but scores of Argentinians posted criticisms of her on Twitter, blaming her for the deaths of 649 Argentine troops during the South Atlantic conflict. Some 255 British military personnel and three Falkland Islanders also died.

Falklands lawmaker Mike Summers said Thatcher was "one of very few political leaders who could have mounted the expedition she mounted in 1982 to restore our freedom, and from a Falkland Islands perspective she will be forever remembered for that."

Britain's pop culture icons past and present also sounded off about the woman who dominated British political landscape through the 1980s.

"Thinking of our 1st Lady of girl power, Margaret Thatcher, a green grocer's daughter who taught me anything is possible," tweeted a former member of the Spice Girls band, Geri Halliwell.

It was the triumvirate of Thatcher, Reagan and Pope John Paul II who defeated communism and the USSR without a shot being fired. (Although the communists did fire a shot, when they tried to assassinate the Pope). Today’s so-called leaders could learn a thing or two by studying how these three leaders were able to change the world without bloodshed.

Lady Thatcher will be remembered throughout history as a great leader … the real kind. My she rest in peace, most deservedly so.

Unfortunately, our current POTUS will be remembered as only a poser. Britain and the world are the better for Lady Thatcher’s contributions. The U.S. and the world are not better for the antics of the current occupants of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave … only when they leave will things have a chance to undergo the arduous task of recovering from their demise and damage.

    God Bless Lady Thatcher.

    Obama-Nation is an Abomination.

Thatcher took on her own Conservatives in Britain. But, primarily, she took on the Liberals who were in control before she arrived and made a horrid mess of the economy and literally gave up the foreign exchange currency which had been the British pound for 300 years to the American dollar, where it has been since, but which the free spending deficits out as far as the eye can see Obama Administration are on the verge of losing for the U.S. She then spoke truthfully to Gorbachev that she hated communism before she discussed with him anything else. That is putting your cards on the table. Let the truth be known. Our POTUS won’t even call Muslim terrorists, terrorists.

Thatcher was a great and strong lady. When what she stood for was unpopular, she remained standing for it. Though it took cutting waste and overspending from government, cutting out government jobs and government guarantees (is anyone in the U.S. government listening???), she kept pursuing her policies. Now we are back to where we were before Thatcher.

We need another Reagan and another Thatcher!

God doesn’t make them like that anymore. That’s why the liberals destroyed God. It’s up to us to rebuild.

Not everyone mourned Margaret Thatcher’s passing. Union types in Great Britain are reported to be celebrating.

And they’re equally celebrating their Muslim immigrants celebrating the English welfare system as the once-great Anglo-Saxon culture celebrates its silly little Magna Carta moment on the world’s stage. Long live Wills & Kate!

How about that? The Argentinians invaded the Falklands without so much as a by-your-leave from those citizens or the Brits and it’s Thatcher’s fault that troops were killed. Well, there’s convoluted thinking for you. All I can think is that Argentina today must be in the hands of a Liberal government and apparently those liberal citizens of the country are making good use of Twitter to curse the Iron Lady, now that’s she’s dead. As one PM said to Lady Thatcher on the floor of Parliament answering her critics, “You’d wipe the floor up with them.”

At one point during these exchanges she said she was enjoying herself and she really looked as though she were, giving back as good as she got.

Margaret Thatcher was a great lady. The world is in desperate need of leadership like hers now–and, sadly, there do not seem to be any Ronald Reagans or Margaret Thatchers left in the world–only left-wing IDIOTS like Obama.

I don’t hear any news outlet discussing the following and giving Lady Thatcher the credit she deserves:

During the Cold War, Gorbachev stated publicly the USSR would never be the first to use nuclear weapons. If the US and UK would have responded with the same message, the USSR would have had assurances it could invade Western Europe with no fear of being nuked!

Margaret Thatcher responded quickly, and stated publicly that she would not hesitate to unleash a nuclear barrage against invading Soviets.

Facing the prospect of a nuclear exchange, Gorbachev knew Russia could never invade Western Europe.

By her strong stand and clear statement, Margaret Thatcher prevented the Soviet invasion of Western Europe.

Paul Harvey observed we could not turn back “the hordes of Asia,” and stated the prime minister was correct in her strong stance.

I’ve very much enjoyed the comments on this page. Yes, Russia attempted to assassinate the Polish Pope, and also tried to poison Poland’s president Lech Walesa, who responded by outlawing the communist party in Poland! Thereafter, when Russian tanks did not roll into Warsaw, ala Budapest, 1956, and Prague, 1968, (still angry) Hungary decided to dismantle its Iron Curtain between them and Austria. Countless East Germans fled through Austria to West Germany, and the Berlin Wall and the rest of the Iron Curtain soon fell.

You are so right. In fact, I was appalled that The Iron Woman, ran second fiddle in radio media behind a departed Mickey Mousecateer & Beach Blanket Bingo starlet. Such is the decline of America in matters of importance in our Bread & Circus Rome.

When all of Western Europe seemed stark raving mad over Reagan pushing for Pershing 2 short range nuclear tipped missiles, pushed for the Neutron Bomb that would have spared much of the European population from destruction but would have left Soviet Armor devoid of living soldiers, Thatcher stood firm with Reagan.

The Communists here and in Europe were simply unhinged that this could happen. Their hope for The Soviet Union to pour countless tanks through the Fulda Gap came to an abrupt neutron glowing end.

Reagan restarted the B-1 Bomber program that Jimmy Carter ended because of the B-2 Stealth Bomber, and Reagan pushed that as well. The whole Soviet mobile command and ground nuclear forces were compromised. Stealth technology promised to null and void the expensive Soviet radar detection forces. Thatcher cheered on The Yanks.

Like Reagan, calling the Soviets an EVIL Empire, Thatcher parsed no “wobbly” words to the Soviets. I clearly recall Communist Professors and fellow students who became hysterical. Dan Rather of CBS seemed to have a meltdown on one Reagan election night. Delightful!

But on the saddest note, The Wretched Left/Communists/Socialists in England did not curl up and die. They redoubled their treasonous efforts, and turned to repopulating England, dispossessing The Island Nation’s native peoples with ALIENS that are useful for a 1984 Nanny Police State.

Swaths of London have been taken out, not by German bombs, far worse, but by Muslims…! My Sister and her friends were escorted out of a section of London by undercover police who explained in clear language that parts of London were very dangerous.

The Finest Hour People, are now saddled, bridled with Hate Crime Laws, observed by informers, cameras, the police… The Home office bans travelers like writer, talk show star, Dr. Michale Savage, yet allows free travel for Muslims…

My friends in England write to me in such guarded language that I feel like I am reading letters sent from subjects of the Soviet Union. No doubt Thatcher, The Queen were, are forced to behave, to not say anything. The Queen frowns a great deal for some reason. Humm? Is this the best that she can do, or is allowed to do?

An irony. The Soviet Union called Thatcher, The Iron Lady, and with the death of the Soviet Union, FREE Russia is pointing out The Death of the West, pointing out the Communists, Internationalists that Free Range amongst us. Thatcher helped to destroy the Soviet reign of terror and assisted to give us, Iron Russia. You will not be forgotten dear Margret Thatcher.

The speech that I heard yesterday was given by the English people, in Parliament I believe, warning of what sort of weak state the Leftists were leading them toward. And indeed the only backbone they seem to have left is in the English Defense League
But remember how long they let that idiot Chamberlain run things then they dumped Churchill in the end! They definitely have a stupid gene in there.
