Colorado shooting match canceled over new gun laws

By Associated Press

MONTROSE, Colo. - A regional shooting competition that would have brought hundreds of people to Colorado has become the latest casualty of the state's new gun laws set to kick in just a few days before the competition.

Members of the International Defensive Pistol Association, which has more than 17,000 members in at least 50 countries, had planned a regional championship beginning July 4 at the San Juan Shooting Range in Montrose.

Pistol association event coordinator Walt Proulx told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel ( that impending limitations on magazine capacity would be the biggest problem. A new state law bans ownership of any magazine with more than 15 rounds manufactured or purchased after July 1.

"If somebody were planning to come to the event, and for some reason needed to get new magazines for their (guns) and they bought them on July 2 and hopped on an airplane and came here, they would technically be in violation as soon as they touched the ground," Proulx said.

The association's regional competition was the second event to be publicly canceled due to Colorado's new gun laws. Firearms maker Ruger recently announced they would move the planned 2013 Ruger Rimfire Challenge World Championships out of the state.

Proulx said another new law that requires background checks on all gun transfers could be problematic for shooters as well.

"If you borrow a gun from somebody, technically they've transferred it to you. And if you find yourself standing there with somebody else's gun that hasn't gone to a dealer and been through a background check, technically you are in violation, as far as I can tell," he said.

The state Attorney General's Office said it is reviewing the legal ramifications of the new laws.

Proulx admitted that some people might see the cancellation as more of a political statement, but he insisted that for him, it was a practical matter.

Hunters across the country, however, say they are boycotting Colorado because it is political.

Northwest Colorado hunting guide Chris Jurney said there have been cancellations and he expects more. Out-of-state hunters accounted for 15 percent of hunting licenses last year, with 86,000 compared with 489,000 for residents.

State tourism officials say they expect minimal impact because of the state's easy licensing program.

But the politicians in Colorado do not suffer a loss of one penny of their fine incomes (above the table, or below). They won’t care until a criminal attacks one of their own family – the rest of Colorado could be butchered, and they wouldn’t care. This is partly why they (along with most politicians) are considered to be members of the Evil Elite.

The association should replan their competition in a more friendly state…TX, AZ, MT….it CO’s loss of revenue and they obviously don’t care! They can sit on their draconian gun laws forever….we’ll never go there again!

Anyone and everyone with any sense who could possibly move out of the State of Colorado should do it as a matter of principle and political Statement. The State of Colorado was going bankrupt before they passed the medical Cannabis initiative. It became the saving grace of Our economy. It literally kept the State and local Governments from going under. Then once they saw how much money it was keeping and bringing into the State it was easy to rationalize Legal cannabis for everyone. (for the record)I never agreed too or voted for these initiatives myself. My point being the Government has no business in our private lives. How hypocritical is the politics and the reasoning of legislating laws for legalization or criminalization of our personal rights as individuals. Be it self medicating or the right to self protection from criminals. Let the State of Colorado go back into the abyss of bankruptcy and see if their Pot smokers alone can keep their economy going. Leave a sinking ship of fools to founder in their scuttled rat infested dunzle. (a soon to be forgotten Colo. Resident)

It’s too bad that the good folk in western CO have to suffer for the liberal idiocy of the Mork n’ Mindy people east of the Rockies. I used to enjoy hunting prairie dogs in the Grand Junction area, but I won’t go back again until sanity has retuned to the state.

Reckon me and mine will take our hunting out of state … we’ll target shoot here but will pass on the Colorado (in state) hunting license this year, and maybe next too.

Colorado is a beautiful state. Too bad it’s run by hippies and Marxists in Boulder and Denver. Similar to NY state, the inmates are running the asylum.
