Obama talking Medicare, Social Security cuts

By United Press International

U.S. President Barack Obama is talking to Democrats and Republicans about cutting Medicare and Social Security entitlements, a White House official said.

"He's reaching out to Democrats who understand we have to make serious progress on long-term entitlement reform, and Republicans who realize that if we had that type of entitlement reform, they'd be willing to have tax reform that raises revenues to lower the deficit," Gene Sperling, director of Obama's National Economic Council, told CNN's "State of the Union."

When asked if that means Obama was talking to top congressional leaders, Sperling said, "Well, he just had the leadership in on Friday," referring to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Sperling said Obama followed up Friday's meeting by making phone calls Saturday to rank-and-file senators in both parties who had expressed interest in "the type of grand bargain that Bowles-Simpson have called for, that most budget experts called for, that recognize it's not cutting defense and domestic spending like education and research we need."

Erskine Bowles, a former chief of staff to Democratic President Bill Clinton, and Alan Simpson, a former GOP senator from Wyoming, were co-chairmen of a White House bipartisan deficit-reduction panel created in February 2010 to find ways of reducing the mounting federal debt.

The panel's package of tax and spending changes fell three votes short of the required 14-vote support from its 18 members that would have sent the proposal to Congress for a vote.

Sperling didn't say who Obama spoke with Saturday.

Boehner said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that when he met with Obama Friday they discussed the need to avert an end-of-the-month budget showdown that could result in a government shutdown.

Obama "agreed that we should not have any talk of a government shutdown," Boehner said. "So I'm hopeful that the House and Senate will be able to work through this."

The House is scheduled to vote Thursday on a spending measure that would keep the government running after its current stop-gap funding mechanism elapses March 27.

The House measure would provide funding through the end of the fiscal year, Sept. 30, and give new flexibility to the Pentagon to manage $40 billion in cuts it took Friday in the sequester.

The sequester is the Washington term for $85 billion in across-the-board federal domestic and military spending cuts triggered when the White House and congressional Republicans failed to reach a compromise on an alternative.

The cuts were included in the 2011 deal to raise the federal debt limit. They are projected to run through Sept. 30 and are the first of a decade-long plan to cut spending $1.2 trillion for nearly every federal program, except for military personnel and entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

This year's cuts represent 2.4 percent of the federal government's annual $3.55 trillion budget.

Sperling, who also appeared on "Meet the Press," said Obama would work to undo the sequester cuts as part of a broader discussion about deficit reduction.

"We will still be committed to trying to find Republicans and Democrats that will work on a bipartisan compromise to get rid of the sequester," Sperling said.

"That's why the president was calling the leadership on Friday, that's why he spent his Saturday afternoon calling Republican and Democratic senators who he thinks could be part of a caucus of common sense to help move our country forward," he said.

So finally Obama is talking about cutting Social Security and Medicare, when these people have paid for it and the government has stolen it. What about the 31 million freebies on obamacare, and the 15 million illegal aliens. Going to cut that out???? Of course not.

I took my SS retirement in Oct. 2011. I didn’t go to direct deposit until Feb. 2012.
With that said, each check I did get showed my “retirement” as “unearned income”.
When I got my end of year statement from Soc Sec in January 2013, the money I received in 2012 from my retirement acct clearly stated it was “unearned income”.
You can thank our so-called congress for that folks! While I paid into the system for 42 years, there are no guarantee’s in life.
Congress changed the wording in Soc Sec because they have every intention of taking it away from US.
At least those of US who paid into it…

Do you suppose their fancy retirements that we bought for them are subject to those same rules they’ve put us under?
If you do, get a hold of me. I’ve got one hell of a money making toll bridge for sale. Owner will carry with small down and “creative” financing…..

You don’t even have to “work” it.

When are people going to realize that the money that we pay in over the years doesn’t come close to the benefits that we’ll receive over the course of our retirement? The money that we’ve paid in is(was)part of a Ponzi scheme that is now falling apart because of them giving people bennies because they’re druggies, losers, etc.. The next thing that they’re going after is our 401K programs.

A couple of things: first SS pays out much more to individuals than individuals pay in. They tried to figure out an RoR, but were too generous. This has been gradually done to win votes. Second, cutting the rate of increase has been going on since Bush by understating the rate of inflation. Personally, I am on SS. I don’t expect it to last too long so I am still working and trying to get some more set aside. There is no easy cure. Any republican suggestion will be shot down by the Democrats, so it is really up to the Democrats to make a move. They are struggling to find something that will work and let them save face. I am pessimistic, and think they will just kick the can down the road. – Politicians (sorry for swearing)…

I was happy to see your comment scores as they indicate a good understanding of the situation. We’ve got to stop talking about “entitlement cuts.” No way that works for most folks who are retired or near, or for the people who are destined to need help. So we need to start calling it entitlement funding, and follow some of the unpopular recs of SB. Very poor people will need their entitlements subsidized and those of us who are currently doing well will pay more in and probably get a little less out. That goes for SS and Medicare. And that’s why we’ve got to stop all foolish talk about any tax increases! Those who are well off are the only hope to make entitlements available for the most vulnerable… so thank them and leave them the hell alone! Run today’s government at 18% of GDP, paid for by the bottom whatever % gets that done and use what’s left to fix the two Ponzi schemes and start paying our debts.

The only cuts to Social Security should be to illegal aliens who never paid into the system, and it is a simple fact, we, as a nation live longer. I know this will piss off those who are getting close to retirement age, but we need to raise thw age of recipients from it’s currenr level, up to at least 71 years old. Then raise it one month per year, until it gets to 72 years old. Don’t screw around by raising it a month per year. That would then take 84 years to get the retirement from 65 , up to 72. DO IT ALL AT ONCE NOW!

We won’t be living longer for very long. The new Obamacare is going to take care of that by not giving us medical care when we need it. Throw Grandma under the bus with the panels. And no, I don’t agree with raising the age of recipients. We paid for social security and if they gave back what they stole from it over the years and what is going for Obamacare, we could have enough to pay for it.

Why cut Social Security that is NOT an entitlement since we pay into it? What would older people do without medicare? Why not stop giving our money away to foreign powers who hate us and it never helps that country but the pockets of their leaders. Why give our tax money to illegals for SS and medical when they don’t even pay into it? If taxes were lowered more people could start a business and provide work for those on welfare. It is all so simple but the elite in WDC think they know better and of course they have the power. I keep saying, our only hope is God but too many could care less.

They are pracicing on taget depicting old people, pregnant women and children. They are implementing the drones. They are asking the soldiers if they would fire upon civilians. Interesting how there’s not talk of cutting/closing/reducing:

    - foreign aid to Russia, North Korea, Egypt, etc.
    - pay to ‘highly paid’ government employees
    - Obamas trips around the country/world to promote his agenda
    - reducing the number of armed bodyguards for Obama (hundreds)
    - preventing the US Post office from giving millions in sponsorships (As in to Lance Armstrong)
    - closing military bases overseas in some of the smaller countries (do we really need bases in 130+ countries around the world?)
    - ‘pork-barrel’ projects for individual members of Congress.
    - government ‘retreats’ to out-of-state/country locations (hundreds of millions of $’s)
    - preventing DHS from purchasing billions of rounds of ammunition and thousands of armored vehicles

There is such a long list of things that could be cut that would have ZERO impact on the American people, it’s disgusting to hear the fear-mongering coming from the government and watch them deliberately cut things that do impact Americans.

Way to stick it to the hard working citizens and totally ignore the obscene waste going on in this administration. If the president and congress want to show their “concern” for the citizens of this country they should start by cutting their own salaries and perks first and foremost. I guess the old folks will be dying off soon, especially if you cut their already meager income and their health benefits, so what’s the point in helping them. Better to put that money toward bankrolling votes you can buy for the long term.

Doesn’t this beat all? He really knows how to destroy the middle class. I’m one of those that worked for nearly 40 years for my SS and Medicare benefits and I depend on them – as many others do. I have read that we paid $4M dollars in Dec. 2011 and $7M in Dec. 2012 for the Obama’s vacations in Hawaii. How much will the Dec. 2013 vacation cost us???? I’m betting $10M. But this kind of cutting is never in the news. I am so sick of this guy and his cohorts. Michelle has 22 assistants – to help her do what? One assistant could likely handle whatever it is that she does (except to tell us what kids should or shouldn’t eat. If Obama knows anything at all, why in the world does he need 52 czars???? There is so much waste and they never consider cutting that.

Not 10% of what we want to spend next year, but 10 % of what we are spending right now. Keep doing that for about five years and you may get somewhere. What to cut…..lets see….stop giving money we do not have to other countries; close some overseas military bases and better fortify our own d**n borders; close at least 5 federal agencies that have helped ruin us (Education is one); yes, cut the pay of Congress and the Prez; do not fund Obamacare; stop paying for Obozo’s lavish vacations; stop funding the UN; fire all of Obozo’s Czars….this should make a nice dent in the out of control mess that exists.

Won’t happen. He will lie, spin, and obfuscate to get the statist media to paint the evil Republicans as obstructionist and he is the only “adult” in the room.

The master deceiver is preparing his next move.

Satan is a deceiver and the father of lies, and his protege is doing a pretty good job of continuing the legacy.

Yeah the Thief in Chief wants to grab the money from the Social Security fund again that you and I paid into all these years. Bunch of thieves stole from it before and that is why it is in the shape it is in. And why? So that he can give it to the welfare rats that don’t work. Nothing but demonic influence instructing Obozo what to do next. No leadership in Washington at all these days except for the demonic kind. They sure were not worried last week when they all were on taxpayers expense vacations, were they? Just gave Egypt 50 million dollars that would have shored up Social Security for a long long time. Just watch and I guarantee in the next week or so, they will throw some more money to the foreigners some where.

We are coming to the end. The average democracy lasts about 200 years. “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” Benjamin Franklin The Blue States are spending into oblivion, as is the fed. If the Red States fail to declare independence, they will be dragged down with the Blue States.

Raising the retirement age is just another way of breaking the contract. The bad guys in all this are not the retirees. The bad guys are the corrupt dishonest government, who forced this socialist idea upon the people. Socialism always fails in the end. This is no exception.

They stole from up our entire live promising to pay back, now that the time has come, they want to change the game again.

This is the old bait and switch con. Don’t accept it. period.

It is time for a completely new government. This one has been broken for over a century.

I would not have been able to last that long and neither can many others with disablilities. My father worked until he was 72 and they had to ask him to leave. It took 3 people to do the job he was doing alone as a mechanical engineer. We can’t put everyone in the same peg hole.

We are just as naive as the German people were in the 1930s. The only way Hitler could support his economic miracle was by first seizing Jewish wealth and second by invading other countries to seize their wealth. After October of 1939 German Government Bonds would have begun to default, so he invaded Poland knowing full well that it would lead to war, but the German people never realized that this was his plan from the start of 1932.

Obama’s agenda is similar. Keep paying off with taxpayer money the groups that have supported him until we are so far in debt we can’t see any way out except the Communist-type seizure of wealth and property and central control of all activities, essentially to achieve a better more compassionate society. However, those who selected him to be the president and arranged the media bias that elected him probably have a different agenda than Obama’s, and if you could see into the lies and misinformation of the Obama energy policies, I think you can see behind the curtain to our nation’s enemies pulling strings to achieve what the naive believe are Utopian goals and objectives, but are in reality merely smoke and mirrors every dictator uses to seize control.

To: anestat, isschade, alchemist, extyrequeen, spkup4america, iamwinner, xjandin, bonboyl, gunsmoke, kaniksukidd, powertothepeople, jenersea, begneli2011,
Entitlement Programs are government programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. For the last four years Democrats have been trying to STOP cuts to Entitlement programs by cutting elsewhere like the defense budget and closing tax loop holes on big oil.
    Republican views on Entitlement Programs:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell: “higher Medicare premiums for the wealthy, an increase in the Medicare eligibility age and slowing cost-of-living increases for Social Security”
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., the third-ranking Senate Republican: “We all know what drives federal spending is the entitlement programs and so far we’ve seen no proposal from the president – no meaningful proposal – when it comes to reforming entitlement programs”
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) called on President Obama and Democrats to specify entitlement cuts in a hypothetical deal to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff,” even though only Republicans have demanded spending cuts to programs like Medicare and Social Security. Despite their support for putting entitlement programs on the chopping block, GOP lawmakers have refused to specify how, or by how much, they would cut the programs. Boehner, instead, used a press conference today to urge Democrats to take the lead on entitlements, even though Obama and Democratic leaders made it clear that they would not support a deal that cut Social Security, and Democrats have repeatedly opposed the Medicare changes Republicans have attempted to make in the past:
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor got even more specific. “Any kind of agreement that we come to has to deal with the prime drivers of our deficit, which is the spending and particularly the health care entitlement programs,” the Virginia Republican said.
The Washington Post’s report, which presents the negotiations as being at a near impasse, fills in the hole by explaining that Democrats are waiting for Republicans to say what kind of Medicare cuts they want, while Republicans insist Democrats go first.
Graham said Tuesday on “Piers Morgan Tonight” on CNN.
“I will not raise the debt ceiling ever again until we get significant entitlement reforms

The Senate’s top Republican suggested specific cuts to popular safety-net entitlement programs – Medicare and Social Security – as the kind of proposals his party wants on the table in talks with the White House over the year-end budget crisis.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California said Democrats aren’t going to throw America’s seniors over the fiscal cliff to give a tax cut to the wealthiest.
Medicare apparently is being discussed. And one idea Republicans have been pushing is raising the program’s eligibility age above its current level of 65.
But just a couple of days ago, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California was saying: “Don’t even think about raising the Medicare age.”
Obama’s spokesman Jay Carney. “The President and the American people won’t tolerate Congressional Republicans holding the American economy hostage again simply so they can force disastrous cuts to Medicare and other programs the middle class depend on while protecting the wealthy.”

If you want to cut some entitlement’s lets cut the full salary of all politicians elected in the US government who even if they only serve one term they get paid till they are dead. Lets cut all government salaries by 25% and make them pay for something once in a while, of which they do not at the current time.

Social Security is a mandatory annuity (insurance instrument). We pay in via premiums. The government immediately confiscates the premiums and then tells us it is not our money and they will give us an “entitlement”. Medicare is a mandatory health insurance policy and we pay premiums. Neither is an “entitlement”. And it is all unconstitutional.

It is irritating that you and others refer to Social Security and Medicaid as “entitlements” which they are NOT! We have paid in our money to be able to have some of it returned to us, ditto Medicaid. Entitlements are allowing those who have NOT paid into these plans, i.e., illegals, etc. Entitlements are food stamps, free phones, refunds on taxes never paid, and all other types of welfare. These are the issues you should address. Obama wants to rob us of OUR savings. He needs to go! Let him cough up a few of his millions first!

In fact, when social security started, people believed that the money they paid in was being invested and would grow to provide for their retirement years. While it is true that people didn’t live as long after retirement then, it was also meant to provide for widows. When a breadwinner dies, the surviving spouse, upon reaching retirement age, must choose whether or not to take the deceased spouse’s social security benefits or his/her own. After that choice is made, he/she forfeits his/her own social security benefits, which then belong to the government.

Had the powers that be left the SS money alone, and invested it conservatively and wisely, instead of misappropriating it and using it for that which it was not designed, Social Security could still be solvent. In the true sense, Social Security should be an “entitlement,” in other words, people who paid in are entitled to what they were promised. Unfortunately the government has changed the meaning of that word to encompass those who, for generations, have added nothing to the pot but continue to feel “entitled” to what belongs to someone else. This is a deliberate misinterpretation on the part of liberals. They make no distinction between the givers and the takers, therefore they can cut the benefits of whom ever they choose and lump it under the general heading of “entitlements.” So the people who have never paid a cent into the program, in the eyes of the liberals, are no different than those who paid in for 40-50 years. In fact, the givers are worth less because they aren’t producing future liberals who can be bought with the promise of a lifetime of entitlements.
