ICE Releases 300-500 Illegal Aliens in Arizona

By The Arizona Daily Star

About 300 people have been released from immigration detention centers in Arizona since Thursday, when the federal government started to review each case in anticipation of widespread budget cuts.

"As fiscal uncertainty remains over the continuing resolution and possible sequestration, ICE has reviewed its detained population to ensure detention levels stay within ICE's current budget," said agency spokeswoman Amber Cargile.

All of them remain in deportation proceedings, she said. About 2,280 people remain in immigration detention in Arizona.

The move took many by surprise, and not everyone was happy to hear about it.

Gov. Jan Brewer said in a news release she was "appalled." "This is pure political posturing and the height of absurdity given that the releases are being granted before the federal 'sequestration' cuts have even gone into effect," she said.

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake called it a "deeply misguided move by DHS."

"With more than $1 trillion in budget deficits, there are many opportunities to rein in federal spending. Releasing hundreds of detainers who have violated the law is most certainly not one of them," he said in a written statement.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said there was "a mass release" in his county. "ICE agents were paid overtime Saturday and Sunday to release over 500 detainees in Pinal County alone," he said in a news release.

All of the five immigration detention centers in Arizona are in the county, including the Pinal County Adult Detention Center, operated by the Sheriff's Office.

Babeu's numbers come from ICE supervisors in Arizona who called him directly, said Tim Gaffney, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

"Neither law enforcement nor any of our citizens were notified of this decision until over a dozen ICE employees and supervisors notified Sheriff Babeu privately," he wrote in an email.

It costs ICE about $164 per day per detainee at a capacity of 32,800 detention beds nationwide, according to the National Immigration Forum, an organization that advocates for immigrants.

Gaffney said the rate at the Pinal County Adult Detention Center is nearly $60 per day per detainee.

Details on who exactly is being released were not provided, but Cargile said, "Priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety."

Caroline Isaacs, local program director for the American Friends Service Committee, said, "To me, it's simply a more honest revelation of the fact that most of the people in detention don't need to be there in the first place." The committee is a national non-profit social justice organization.

"Eighty percent of prosecutions in the federal judicial system are for crossing the border and crossing the border again," she said.

Hmmmm …. setting the dogs on innocent Americans? No, worse, setting criminal foreigners on innocent Americans. (Note: There is a very high rate of child molestation in the Mexican illegal alien population, so we could construe this as the Feds releasing predators to prey on our children.)

These people are not stupid; they are not crazy; they are not ridiculous (all of which I hear every day).

    They are evil.

Wow is this really how all of you think? I was beginning to be swayed over to the GOP side by some it’s fiscal policies but I can’t believe that this is how you view the world. I want to like you guys but come on, is everybody here this xenophobic and can’t see anything from outside of their own perspective? Even though I am Hispanic I agree that something has to be done about illegal immigration, that much is clear. however dehumanizing them and treating them like animals just turns you into the evil one. Thank god that you were born into a life that have you opportunities and allowed you to live comfortably, and never apologize for that, but at the same time don’t be so quick to cast stones at those we weren’t. They’re doing what they have to do to survive and you are doing what you have to to keep the country prospering, but it doesn’t have to come down to “racist” insults. I have heard every single one of those claims that you made said by Hispanic people about white people who view you as the savage monsters and I have to try telling them exactly what I’m telling you. it’s seems like I am the only same person on both sides.

Personally I think that along with an electrified fence the border should be mined and have predators patrolling it. If you break into Mexico you go to prison and are deported. If it’s good enough for them it should be good enough for us. These invaders cost us the citizens of America multi billions annually. Enough is enough. And as for Obama goes I would think this is another impeachable offense to add to the list. But, nobody in Washington has the ***** to go after him.

To Ramirez87 — Your native country, Mexico, has VERY draconian immigration laws, making it difficult to impossible for an American to immigrate there legally, and even if they do, in many cases, they are not allowed to own property, etc. And yet you call us BIGOTS for complaining about the number of Mexican citizens who are illegally entering our country? This is not YOUR country–you were not born here. If you want to immigrate here, do it LEGALLY–don’t slither under the fence or swim the river or whatever, arrive here ILLEGALLY then jump up and start demanding your “rights”! If the shoe were on the other foot, how many “rights” would an American have if they entered Mexico the way you come here?

I have NO prejudice whatsoever against Hispanic people, but I get real tired of people who come here illegally and then suddenly decide they are entitled to ALL the rights of citizenship and THEN some. You must understand that our govt. is so STUPID that in many cases, there are many more services and programs available to help illegals than there are to help people actually BORN here. How is that fair?

So why aren’t these people back in their own countries raging against the conditions and demanding that their government do something about it? Living beside the US for all these past centuries and the place is still as bad as it ever was. All we are being used as is a cash cow to bolster the government there when the illegals send their money home. Do you agree with La Raza and their demands that the US should turn over land to them because they are his and her spanics? People are sick and tired of the government just caving into illegal demands and the illegals just sponging off of everyone. So yeah, you can expect a little name calling now and then. Does not make it right, but their actions do not make it right either.

I suppose I am preaching to the wrong crowd if Frogman’s comment gets five stars. But I just hope you understand that this is why the GOP didn’t win this last election; despite the way the media portrays the country as being completely filled with mindless drones on both side of the spectrum, their is still a large group of us who chose to see things rationally and with as little amount of bias as possible, and it is very difficult for those people to get behind you when THIS is the way you are perceived. I’ve never been a fan of generalizations so I don’t write of the whole GOP as being xenophobic trolls, however it appears I am not going to find people who enjoy civil discourse and rationality on this website so I’ll have to find a more moderate conservative one. I’ll leave you to your ranting now.

to oleteabag- I was born and raised in the United States. My family founded a small town on the north bank of the rio grande when this land still belonged to Spain, in 1520 to be exact, therefore extending my roots here to a time before a pilgrim knew what an America was. “So you support la Raza” you will say, to which I will say no, this land was taken fair and square by America like Mexico was taken from the Mayans and Aztecs. I am aware of the draconian laws and the name calling by the other side as well, which is why I equally strive to be a voice of reason on that side of the issue as well and get them to see that you feel this way because you feel that you need to protect your country. But I am not talking about governments, I am talking about people which are two distinct entities.

to jenersea- I don’t mean to attack your knowledge of this situation but I feel I may be a bit more informed than you are. There are protests and the like every day throughout Mexico calling for social reforms, but of course you are not exposed to them through most news outlets here, you get THESE stories, which is not your fault, people tend to like stories that reinforce their beliefs on both sides of the spectrum. And if we look at history and analyze every single revolution, there was always a mass emigration, how do you think the United States was formed? I know history focuses on the great leaders and battles but if you look a little deeper than the surface you will see that. it takes food to survive, much less to revolt, and for the lowest class of Mexicans that means either trying their luck in the US or turning to the cartels. It’s not an easy solution but throwing insults and dehumanizing an entire ethnicity doesn’t help at all.

“to oleteabag- I was born and raised in the United States.”

rameriz, IF you were born in the U.S., you are an American citizen and you should not be supporting the criminal aliens who have illegally entered the U.S. You therefore are part of the problem when most U.S. citizens are insisting on a solution. If you want to take the illegal alien’s side in this debate, maybe you should relocate to Mexico and denounce your U.S. citizenship. You were born here, you enjoy the privileges of citizenship, yet you stand against the U.S. in favor of those illegally entering the nation simply because they are of the same race. Surely you realize how hypocritical and un-American your position on this issue makes you. Yes, I referred to you as “un-American” because you are anti-American when you support criminals over your own government. Do you realize the drain on the U.S. economy because people like you are lobbying the government to be politically correct and provide the illegals with the same benefits you enjoy as a citizen? Why don’t you illegally sneak into Mexico and see if they will allow you to demand favors from their government while you are illegally occupying their country?

I think you are a Democrat troll who are simply posting on this GOP site, and I do not fall for your “I want to like you, BUT. . .” and then begin to tell us what YOU think is wrong with the GOP.

Illegal aliens may be neither crazy nor stupid nor ridiculous nor evil, but they are, in fact, illegally present, and that fact seems to be sufficient to warrant deportation. Unfortunately there are those in official positions who have failed in their duty to enforce all laws, including those in the immgration arena, with the resultant problems associated with toleration of illegality similar to those associated with toleration of vice as noted a couple of centuries ago by Pope who said: “Vice is a monster of so frightful mien as to be feared needs only to be seen, but seen too oft, familiar with her face, we first endure, then pity, then finally embrace.”

Having come (by default due to tolerance) to embrace illegal residents, it is difficult to shake that embrace, especially due to the force of Dirksen’s Inequality: “The mind is no match with the heart for persuasion; constitutionality is no match with compassion”. Witness, for example, an exchange in S.C. between Sen. Graham and a woman attending a compaign rally there. He wondered what to do about the millions of illegal residents, and she replied “Send them all back home”, to which he said “What would you do if someone told you to send your grandmother away?”

Lawmakers must put such thoughts aside and consider only questions about how to start a process of gradual repatriation by issuing temporary work permits to current illegal residents, at the termination of which holders must go back home. For current illegal residents the duration of the permit should be suffient to permit holds to prepare for going back to their respective countries of citizenship.

To ramirez787: Perhaps one reason why reform comes so slowly to Mexican government is that it is WAY easier for them to just dump their problems across the US border and expect US to take care of them, rather than deal with the issues that need addressing on THEIR side of the border? I can appreciate that people are desperate and want a better life, etc., but the U.S. cannot be the “cash cow” and refuge for the entire world! Because of the unenforced immigration laws and “open border” thanks to our ******* president, it is likely that hordes of Muslim terrorists are coming into our country posting as Mexican illegals, also.

While I agree that it is impractical to deport all who have managed to get in up until now, and something needs to be done to give them a path to citizenship, I don’t think it’s fair for them to “jump ahead” of those waiting in line to enter legally, nor do I think ANY type of “amnesty” should happen until the damned border is CLOSED and our immigration laws ENFORCED like other countries enforce theirs. I am not xenophobic, I just don’t see why illegals expect us to put THEIR interests ahead of legal immigrants, and, for that matter, our own citizens.

To Ramirez787: You should also understand that our current President has made it a habit to label ANYBODY who disagrees with him about ANYTHING as a “racist” or “bigot”. It is his way of bullying people into silence and/or agreeing with him. Some of us REFUSE to be silenced by this BS tactic. That does NOT make us racists or bigots, it makes us AMERICANS exercising our rights to free speech, and if our America-hating President does not like it, he knows what he can do with himself. And that goes for anybody ELSE who attempts to adopt this bullying tactic as a means of getting their way or attempting to silence anybody who disagrees with them. So if that is your game, better play it somewhere else. Most of us who do NOT agree with our lying *******-In-Chief are BEYOND SICK of this PC bullying BS.

I agree with almost everything in your 2:25 post oleteabag. at specialK- nice post, I can also see something like that play into a possible solution. And at bna42 I assure you that I am neither a democrat nor a republican, and am I not entitled to free speech the same as you, or do you, like many hardcore republicans and democrats believe that free speech only applies to those who agree with them?

Wow, dude, your rating is going down faster than you can type! I believe you are another one of the big BO’s 3500 new hires at the WhiteHouse’s propaganda department. You try to talk so “rationally”, but you can’t because you are not rational at all. And I really believe that you were thinking about joining the GOP party but just can’t because they are too mean. Sniff.
Whether you do or not doesn’t make any difference to most of the people on this site because most of us here are just as pi$$ed off with them as with the dumbocrats. And BO and the boys have played the racist card so much I don’t have any problems with being called that, it doesn’t mean a thing anymore. If you are NOT a damned lying troll, then you are as blind and unaware of your own giant bias blocking your view as the poor ignorant guy that painted BO as the newly arisen Christ that got him on the cover of some magazine that noone remembers the name of. You say that “we get THESE stories”…what in THIS story is disparaging to you or the rest of the illegal aliens in the country, or to whites, or to polka dot elves? I think if you weren’t a troll, no, not only a troll but a PAID troll (the absolute worse kind) you would have not had a thing to say about the article. And as for me, I will say that I really don’t care what you like or don’t like, because you are either a paid troll or another unthinking idiot. Somehow you think that I am supposed to ignore all the negative results that millions of illegal aliens bring to this poor country of mine. We are drowning in debt with a lot of it caused by the illegals living here, and all the pressures they put on services and infrastructure, etc. You would have me believe that these are all just good people coming here for a better life. I say BULL! I contend that drugs are an everyday way of life for ALL illegal Mexican aliens. I contend that they are hot blooded and hot headed, men, women and children alike. I contend that there are more of them on OUR welfare rolls than are making their own way…they largely can’t because good ole small “a” american’s love to hire them because they can get them real to mow their lawns cheap. I contend that many of them are here not to work, but to set up outlets here in the states. I know why Chicago has such a high crime rate! I contend that if you were REALLY a natural born citizen here, you’re attitudes about this would be very different. So please, please find a more “moderate” “conservative” site someplace and remove yourwelf from here. That is unless and until you REALLY want to have a rational, same conversation. You, like the Obama painter, may learn something about the country, and about yourself.

“. . .dehumanizing them and treating them like animals just turns you into the evil one.”

ramirez, who is “dehumanizing them and treating them like animals”? Being arrested and deported for violating our immigration laws is not “dehumanizing”. They acted like animals when they crawled under the fence or dug a tunnel to crawl through. Why don’t you explain your solution to this illegal immigration problem? I can almost bet that it includes words like “amnesty” and “citizenship” while ignoring the fact that they are criminals and have been since the day they crossed our border. Rather than ranting about the GOP why don’t you enlighten us on the attitudes of these illegal aliens who disrespect our laws, insist that we teach their language in our schools, demand free medical care, take our jobs and then send their pay back to Mexico, and treat us like ****? Why don’t you tell us why all these amnesty groups and sanctuary cities are not compounding the problem by taking their side against our own nation? IF you continue to support and defend the illegals, I couldn’t care less what you believe or what you say because you are WRONG!

“And at bna42 I assure you that I am neither a democrat nor a republican, and am I not entitled to free speech the same as you, or do you, like many hardcore republicans and democrats believe that free speech only applies to those who agree with them?”

IF you are a U.S. citizen you have the constitutional right to “free speech”, but if you are illegal you have NO constitutional protections. However, don’t make accusations about how hardcore I am or lying about my believing that I think free speech should only apply to those who agree with me. That is a lie, so that’s the end of our discussion.

Like I said to you earlier, why don’t you go to Mexico or any other foreign country and try some of the **** that the illegals do in the U.S.? Why don’t you let Mexico “dehumanize you and treat you like an animal”?

This is a criminal action, done by someone who took an oath to defend The Constitution and We the People. But who cares?

Where is the GOP on this latest slap in the face? Are they hiding in their oak paneled halls, fearing the loss of a single Hispanic voter if they demand that the law be enforced? Likely, yes, from what I have seen of the pathetic clowns that pass for leading voices on the GOP.

I had the pleasure to see on You Tube, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, stand firm on the issue of immigration. Finally. Finally someone who is thinking about what is good for his Country and his fellow Countrymen FIRST.

The Republic that my Father risked his life for in WW2 is quickly dying. There is not an endless existence for what passes as a Nation here. If centuries established Rome could fall, we can too.

Jeff Sessions for President! 2016 I have had enough of the mealy mouthed politicos. If Sen. Rand Paul can get out of the idiocracy word stumble about having MORE workers come to America, he would make a good VP. If not, I am through with him too. Good thing those boarders (all boarder states with Mexico) are tight, safe and secure….they’ll never get out!

*><* And Washington wonders why we who live within these States that share a boarder with Mexico are at our wits end! Maybe Washington Elites should come live in AZ for a year…or Texas…or New Mexico…or God forbid, even California (southern tip of course) Just maybe within a year or two of being forced to live the problem day in and day out, a new perspective can be finally accomplished so they will actually follow the law and enact laws that actually make some friggin sense!

Our Federal Government gone mad. They are taking cuts where it gets them the most political points. Let the illegals out of jail who have criminal records, but yet continue to pay out welfare checks to people who could work and don’t, only because they have too many children. And I agree with Romney in this one area . . . “Good-bye to federal subsity Big Bird” and all the federal spending on public access and the arts. We need to clean up the abuse of welfare and I believe we would be able to save millions. But that would not gain political points for the man in the White House. We need to start bringing jobs back to America and start employing Americans and not the illegals. Yes, we hire illegals at a cheap wage because we as American’s have become spoiled and lazy and don’t want to do the hard laborous work the illegals do at minimum wage. All the convenient stores seem to be owned by foreigners who came to this country and were given grants or loans and assistance that normal American’s can’t even begin to get. But we are nice and soft to those, but we require the American citizen to provide proof as to how we can afford a business if we want. With Obamacare we can’t afford businesses today. And talk about saving, why is the Vice-President and Congress getting raises when the normal American barely gets by with the high prices of gas and traveling anywhere is cumbersome to fill up a gas tank. Also, who is going to bring the “O” into accountability for the amounts of money he causes to be spend on vacations for him and his family? Our Congress just bows low to his wasteful spending and doesn’t call him to task! The military commissary’s around the world will soon be required to close one day out of the week and they have directed that full time employees be taken to 32 hours and part-time employees will be reduced even lower causing household incomes to be reduced in order for DOD to meet cuts. But, Congress will still work their four day week and receive their full compensation and not give up anything. The federal government is attacking the citizen and we can do nothing. We The People have become powerless against tyranical tyranny. Soon we will see the SS brown shirts and thugs beating up those who disagree with their thinking. One day it will be president and the next day it will be Emperor or Fuerer. I would recommend everyone watch Star Wars I, II, III again. It may fictional, but Senator Amidala stated when the Chancellor named himself Emperor and changed the title of the Republic to the Galactic Empire, “So this is how librty dies, with thunderous applause.” And then the Emperor under Executive Order, ordered the Jedi to be killed. Watching it recently made me realize how things are unfolding at this moment. As you watch the State of the Union, there was thunderous applause at his dictating how he wanted the government to be. God bless America and God save us from the “O”!

Cut back in Military to a four day week with pay and volunteer one day to accomplish the time needed is already in play.
I just received word from a friend whose daughter is a MD treating veterans. She has been told to accomplish her required work in four days and the fifth day without pay.

These high profile cuts are to try and create resentment towards the Republican Party, of which, BHO tried to blame but got caught in the lie. Any of the public with a brain in their head realizes it is costly propaganda he is pulling. Hopefully it should backfire in his face.

At what total cost does he waste the taxpayer’s money with the release of these prisoners, including apprehension, processing and any damages by possible criminal action now running amuck?

All this hype by BHO over a 2% cut when a 10% increase is being allotted. Why any releases at all?
Political Posturing has outweighed any common business sense.

Emotions and feelings of disgust, disappointment, and extreme trepidation are running rampant in myself as I’m sure it is in many others over recent events relating to the Chicken Little “Sequestration”. Even this site continues to proliferate the idea that the automatic “cuts” are to the budget, which, by the way, doesn’t exist. Folks, get it straight that these “cuts” are in the projected INCREASE in spending (most likely wastefully, I might add). While the content of the articles about the sequestration reveal the political shenanigans of our corrupted politicians (yeah, they drank the Kool-Aid, too), the headlines and story leads present the converse idea.

We’re sick of the falsehoods. Give us some truth from beginning to end.

This whole country needs to turn back to God and the Christian values we were founded on or we are finished as a great nation. Only God can save us now and the hour is very late.

sirod, I couldn’t agree more. As a matter of fact, the only reason I believe God has permitted the “O” to serve (and I mean serve, not rule) as president is because He is getting ready call Revelation to fully come to pass. Soon those who are dead shall be raised at the sound of the Son’s shout and Gabrielle’s blast of the trumpet and we who are alive in Him and remain shall be caught up to meet Him in the air. For all these things must come to pass. Just read where Obama wants to do away with the marriage act, which was voted unanimously by the people of this country. http://zionica.com/2013/02/28/obama-seeking-to-criminalize-biblical-concept-of-marriage/

Soon the Christian may be called to task as the Pastor in Iran is and forced to repent to Muslimism and take the mark of the beast or lose our heads!
II Chronicles 7:14 is our only hope in this mess we are in, in the United States of America today.

Not everyone in America is a Christian. Do we all need to hear about Jesus when we do not all believe in him?

I had all the sermons in 12 years of Catholic School. Many many contradictions told to me.

Perhaps, aliberalmind, you were subjected to contradictions in the sermons that you heard and in discussions afterwards. However, surely you cannot ignore the moral, ethical values contained in the 10 Commandments…or can you?

Jesus was the fulfillment of the Law of Isreal. His life upon this earth was a living example of the true context and content of the Law. Whether you “believe” in Him or not, the teachings are as valid today as they were then. May God have mercy upon ALL of us…

To aliberalmind, no matter whether you believe in Christianity and the walk with Christ or not . . . it matters not. The Bible is the true living word of God and is coming to pass. The day we lay our head down in death, is the day we learn whether there is a God or is not. If you die and nothing happens, well, then sobeit. However, if you die and learn the Bible was the infalible Word of God and you are headed for hell because you couldn’t get your thoughts around His Word because it didn’t suite your lifestyle and refused to repent and be born again as stated in John 3:16, then it is you and you alone who be cast into outer darkness where there is no party going on and the fires of hell are as hot as volcantic molten lava. I’ll take my chances on abiding by His Word and pray II Chonicles 7:14 . . . also, take a look at Luke 16:19-31 Jesus states “There was a rich man . . .” Not a parable. At the end of that the Rich Man asks Abraham to send Lazarus back to earth from the dead and his brothers would heed his warning . . . but he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ Jesus rose from the dead and there were three thousand witness when he ascended into heaven. It only takes three! God’s Word bears this out. But that is your decision aliberalmind . . . you have free will but we will all face His judgment one day, even the Christian at the judgment seat of Christ. May God show you His light.

You can choose to hear or not to hear about Jesus or anyone else, in the end when our lives are over we will all answer for our choices in life. Some people’s sins go before them and some follow after. The choice is individual and only you can make it.
God is true and Jesus died for your sins. Your not believing does not make it untrue. But it does make a choice you will live to regret.

At Sirod, would you care to elaborate on how Christian values would apply to this particular situation? I’m not saying you are wrong (being a Christian myself) but I would like to hear exactly what you mean by that as it applies to this.

There was an author, a friend of Ezra Pound, named Eustace Mullins, who wrote a book some 25 years ago that stated that the illegal interlopers allowed to enter our nation would be used by the “money’d elite” to destabilize our economy and foment internal disruption. I guess that prognostication would make him a prophet.

Paying overtime to ‘deputies’ to save incarceration expense for a sequestration that may not even take effect? The released criminals are wearing ankle monitors that will likely be lost or broken – more expense. Where is the cost/benefit here?

I would like to see the president (and his beloved companion, the teleprompter) on prime time television state that he has ordered ALL released illegals to be taken back into custody.

Of course I would like many things…all just as unlikely to occur as this wish.

Maybe I’m missing something but IF we have all these illegals being held waiting for a hearing (a hearing? Do they have rights?) why do we not just pack them onto a bunch of buses and drive them 100 miles over the border and drop them off.
