Officials quibble as Obama's hometown approaches 500th shooting victim in 2012

By Chicago Tribune

Chicago Tribune - Gave Bates smiled through tears as she swiped her hand across her phone, flipping through pictures of her cousin playing around and striking goofy poses.

"He was a lot of fun, very good at imitating people," Bates said of Nathaniel T. Jackson, 40. "He just had so much fun all the time. And we all grew up together in the same house."

Jackson was standing outside a store in the Austin neighborhood around 9 p.m. Thursday when someone walked up and shot him in the head, police said. His death was the 500th homicide in Chicago this year, marking a grim milestone. The city last reached that toll in 2008.

Jackson grew up on the West Side, a few miles away from where he was gunned down, and had been released from prison this past summer after serving a sentence for robbery. He had been shot several years ago, after an earlier stint in jail, and Bates said she constantly warned him to be careful on the street.

"The last time he was out, someone had shot him several times, in the back," Bates said as she stood outside Stroger Hospital, where Jackson was pronounced dead. "He was a fighter, he was a survivor."

Police had no motive on the shooting outside Noah Foods at Augusta Boulevard and Lavergne Avenue. No one was in custody.

Police tapped on apartment windows and knocked on doors looking for witnesses. A few bullet casings, which police believed were from a .45-caliber handgun, were found near the blood-stained sidewalk in front of the store.

Jackson's family sat for three hours in a waiting room at Stroger Hospital when staff members finally walked in and told them Jackson had died. Relatives stood up and exchanged tight embraces.

Bates said her cousin had been staying with a family friend after his release from prison in August. "We grew up on the West Side, over on Monroe and Homan. And then we got a little older, my grandmother moved us up on Kedzie and Armitage. And boy, was he a feisty one," she said.

As of Thursday night, homicides were up 17 percent over last year in Chicago, and shootings had increased by 11 percent, according to police statistics.

Largely contributing to the spike was the unusual number of homicides that occurred during the early part of the year, when the city experienced unseasonable warmth. In the first three months of the year, homicides ran about 60 percent ahead of the 2011 rate.

Chicago needs to give free membership to Bath House’s to these so called gangs members, then when “Bath House Barry” is in town he can come to various Bath House and perform fellatio on the Gang Members bringing down their hostilities. Less shooting and murders, now that’s what a real homosexual president does to bring down crime in his home town.

And deep down “Bath House Barry” knows I’m right…
He use to do it for free, and now he has a chance to save lives!

I understand that obama was their Senator, and the mayor is one of obama’s right hand men, former appointee. The Mayor even said that Chicago is the every city, the one to emulate. Maybe he meant cremate.
All that hot air over gun control and now they are making up their own statistics. People will believe anything. I just hope to escape with being able to post my opinion.

I think it’s very possible with the $5 million BOzo spent to hide his background and what information has leaked out, it’s fair to say he is the first bisexual president we have ever had.

Being on the “down low” is acceptable behavior in the black community. Isn’t that right Toure?

Funny thing, I’ve heard statistics about who is shooting whom in Chicago, and I think it’s a safe bet that 98% of the Chicago shooters who voted, voted for Obama and company. Maybe what we need is a law outlawing voting for Democrats. Or then again, maybe we could just impose a $2000 dollar voting tax on any one who votes for liberal candidates and then give that money to the families of the shooting victims?

I know, I know …. that’s insane. It only makes about as much sense as what’s already going on.

Did Obama speak up when all this was happening, mostly kids.
I guess he doesn’t think it matters when they are black or when they are older. I have been hearing about this for months and it amazes me that the only place I have heard about it is on fox News. What about all the Syrian children getting slaughtered everyday. I guess the President only worries about the kids in this country. That is why I don’t believe in the United Nations, they should have been a stop to what is going on in Syria a long time ago.

He was a lot of fun,…

He just had so much fun all the time…

released from prison this past summer…

He had been shot several years ago, after an earlier stint in jail…

Police had no motive on the shooting …

constantly warned him to be careful on the street…

DOESN”T anyone else see the freaking disconnect here – this is a stupid scumbag shot by another rival scumbag and we have to hear this garbage spewed from the next of kin?

How about constantly warning him to be a law abiding citizen with a job – maybe that is better advice from age say oh um 1.

    Serriously

Freaking idiots – they walk among us and are allowed to vote.
