Shooter: 'I don't like your politics'

By Eric Tucker

WASHINGTON (AP) - A man who volunteered at a gay community center had a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a box of ammunition when he said "I don't like your politics" and shot a security guard at the headquarters of a conservative lobbying group, authorities revealed Thursday.

Floyd Lee Corkins, 28, was charged in federal court a day after opening fire in the lobby of the Family Research Council. The guard, who was shot in the arm, was wounded but was able to help wrestle the gun away and restrain the shooter, police said.

Corkins was charged with assault with intent to kill and bringing firearms across state lines and was expected to appear later Thursday in federal court.

Corkins lived with his parents in Herndon and had recently been volunteering at a D.C. community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. He told the guard words to the effect of, "I don't like your politics" and pulled a handgun from his backpack, according to an FBI affidavit.

Besides a box of ammunition, authorities also found 15 sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain that has landed at the center of a national cultural debate over gay marriage.

The Family Research Council had recently defended Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy for his opposition to gay marriage. The council strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion and says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion." The conservative group maintains a powerful lobbying presence, testifying before Congress and reviewing legislation.

Corkins' parents told FBI agents that he has "strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner," the complaint says.

The assault charge carries up to 30 years in prison and the weapons charge has a 10-year maximum sentence. It wasn't immediately clear if Corkins had a lawyer.

Authorities believe Corkins parked his car at a northern Virginia Metro station and used public transportation to get downtown. An open black box resembling a gun box was found on the car's passenger seat, the affidavit says.

The guard, Leonardo "Leo" Johnson, 46, was shot in the left arm. His mother, Virginia Johnson, said he was resting comfortably at a hospital Thursday morning. She said she had not been to visit him but had spoken to him by phone.

"He said he feels very well," she told The Associated Press in a brief interview. "I am proud of him, very proud of him."

FRC president Tony Perkins said he visited Leo Johnson in the hospital and told him that he was a hero.

"He said, 'This hero business is hard work,'" Perkins said during an appearance Wednesday morning on American Family Radio.

Perkins added that the shooting would not deter his organization from its mission.

"We're not going anywhere. We're not backing up, we're not shutting up. We have been called to speak the truth," Perkins said. "We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced."

Unfortunately, we will be seeing more attacks on our Christian citizens and leaders. They seek to kill and destroy anything that does not suit their purpose, which is total moral degradation of our society, supporting their leader, and tearing down America as a whole.

I agree! When did freedom of speech and religion, come to mean “freedom FROM disliked speech and religion?” How is it that gays, think they can stop people from supporting marriage as it is supposed to be, athiests think they have a right to keep others from believing in their religions, and anything they find offensive has to be done away with? I don’t care what gays do in their private lives, and they can have civil unions to legalize their relationships; just don’t call it a marriage, because that was determined by our creator. Athiests have every right to not believe in anything but themselves, but they do not have a right to keep everyone else from showing they believe in a higher power of some kind, yet the courts allow them to waste time bringing these absurd cases to trial! Why don’t the judges tell the ambulance chasing lawyers, they don’t have a let to stand on, and fine them for wasting time that could have been spent on something really important?

it is to my observation, that the president did not use any wisdom nor understanding when he opened this bag of worms, when he gave his support of same sex marriage, I mean what did he think would happen or will not happen…where’s he’s brain , there is a “right and wrong to life “..and there is just plain old good “common sense”, this will diffidently further divide our country more, the president should be more interested and concerned in uniting our nation , not pushing his own political agenda, and not causing further chaos…does he care for our nation”s well being? it does not look to be so.

I agree that we are going to be seeing more of this, partially because of the acceptance of Christian bashing by our political leaders, as well as by the mainstream media. There was no outrage expressed by the President over this act of terrorism because, frankly, the left isn’t outraged. They don’t care when people with views other than theirs are the victims of this kind of hate crime. To the left, Christians are nothing, just easy prey and the butt of jokes, as well as victims of the worst kind of stereotyping. We need to be prepared, and to prepare our children for what is to come in this political climate. The left has no filters and no limits to how far they will go to smash us. The press will continue to spin and splice, and one day good people will wake up and wonder how it came to this. I suppose the Germans felt the same way, once it was too late.

When a neo nazi shoots a democratic congress women, and could have been motivated by right wing hate radio, he had to be mentally disturbed. But when some chubby dude, maybe unemployed, snaps and shoots a gaurd in the lobby of some anti-gay lobbiest, it has to be political. Gado. Loughner, who shot your democratic congresswoman, only wounded her, and killed the republican conservative judge with her at the event, was shown to be extreme left wing with the judge as his primary target. The Aurora theater shooter had ties to Occupy Wall Street, another Democrat movement. Most school shooters are not politically motivated, unless it’s the politics of school popularity. And just so you’re clear, the Nazis were an extreme socialist movement, a left wing non-conservative movement.

The Nazis were nowhere near left wing and were definitely not socialist. This has been refuted numerous times. I know – it’s in their name, but by that logic the Peoples’ Republic of China is republican (which it isn’t). The following is by David Neiwert who is quoting Paxton, an expert on governments – particularly fascism:

The citations available on this subject are numerous, but probably the clearest explanation comes from Robert O. Paxton in The Anatomy of Fascism, who explains that fascism for all its rhetoric was in practice closely aligned with and allied with capitalists and conservatives — some of whom, years down the road, came to regret the association, but the vast majority of whom approved enthusiastically up through the war years. (Think Krupp.) They were also decidedly — violently, murderously — anti-socialist.

Another supposed essential character of fascism is its anticapitalist, antibourgeois animus. Early fascist movements flaunted their contempt for bourgeois values and for those who wanted only “to earn money, money, filthy money.” They attacked “international finance capitalism” almost as loudly as they attacked socialists. They even promised to expropriate department-store owners in favor of patriotic artisans, and large landowners in favor of peasants.

Whenever fascist parties acquired power, however, they did nothing to carry out these anticapitalist threats. By contrast, they enforced with the utmost violence and thoroughness their threats against socialism. Street fights over turf with young communists were among their most powerful propaganda images. Once in power, fascist regimes banned strikes, dissolved independent labor unions, lowered wage earners’ purchasing power, and showered money on armaments industries, to the immense satisfaction of employers.

The meaning of “National Socialism” was essentially part of the Nazis’ vision of Germany under siege from outside forces — namely, the Jews. They intended to apply the principles of state ownership only to those businesses and industries — i.e., international banking — that were not specifically German; meanwhile, German-owned capitalist enterprises were given special preferences. As Paxton explains:

It turned out in practice that fascists’ anticapitalism was highly selective. Even at their most radical, the socialism that the fascists wanted was a “national socialism”: one that denied only foreign or enemy property rights (including that of internal enemies). They cherished national producers. Above all, it was by offering an effective remedy against socialist revolution that fascism turned out in practice to find a space. If Mussolini retained some lingering hopes in 1919 of founding an alternative socialism rather than an antisocialism, he was soon disabused of those notions by observing what worked and what didn’t work in Italian politics. His dismal electoral results with a Left-nationalist program in Milan in November 1919 surely hammered that lesson home.

The pragmatic choices of Mussolini and Hitler were driven by their urge for success and power. Not all fascist leaders had such ambitions. Some of them preferred to keep their movements “pure,” even at the cost of remaining marginal.

There is no viable data to support your contention. The assertion that the Aurora shooter had ties to the OWS movement may exist only in your vivid imagination. The contention that the Nazis were socialists is some thing like arguing that the KKK was Christian, simply because they used a cross in their ceremonies. From reading your post I would surmise you admired the Nazis.
