Jerry Brown thinks it's 'silly' to compare nearly bankrupt CA to European nations

By Amy Taxin

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown says Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney ought to rethink his comments after comparing his state to struggling European nations.

While visiting a Frito-Lay distribution center near Los Angeles on Thursday, Brown dismissed Romney's remarks as inaccurate in light of California's relatively manageable debt burden and economic wealth. He labeled the remark "just silly."

"We're one of the richest economies in the world," Brown told reporters. "We're the ninth richest nation-state. So I think the governor better rethink some of his thoughts because they're not accurate."

On the campaign trail Wednesday, Romney warned voters in Iowa that President Barack Obama is leading the nation down a similar path of huge debt to European countries.

"Entrepreneurs and business people around the world and here at home think that at some point America is going to become like Greece or like Spain or Italy, or like California — just kidding about that one, in some ways," he added, to laughter from his audience.

The credit rating agency Standard & Poor's last year rejected comparisons between California's annual budget deficits and the financial problems of Greece, noting in part that California has a more diverse economy.

I really don’t know which will sink California first:
The down economy and the pathetic Dem state and national leadership.
[Jerry Brown and Barack Ozero are both losers.]
    OR
The next big earthquake that will dump most of the state into the Pacific Ocean.

well at this point an earthquake that took half the state and destroyed it would be the only thing that would help us here in calif . as pouring money into this state is not the problem here . we give the state 67 cents a gal on every gal of gas pumped . this is on top of all the bribe money and scam fees the oil company’s pay and the gas stations pay their sales tax and the driver that delivers it pay his tax and the state is broke . they could rob a dollar a gal and still be broke . calif does not have a problem with racking in the money they have a problem with their addiction to wasteful spending . at 67 cents a gal taxes calif should be the richest state . so yes a record earthquake to wipe out half the state would be the only fix for calif .

The European countries are broke because of their socialism and Obama wants that to happen here too. Well, California is broke so what he is saying is true. Keep up the socialism guys and the US is next. If the uninformed can’t see that, then I guess they deserve what they get but the rest of us will have to suffer too. Remember, Obama is the only president in history that permitted a downgrade in our credit rating.

Well, I am from smack dab in the middle of California & I never vote Democrat because I never like who they run or their values. Unfortunately, there are more turning out for the socialists/democrats when it comes time to vote. The sun must be too much for some of our Californians. It fried their brains & they forgot what Brown jr & Sr did to us before.

What a shame. I don’t know why the voters continue to elect the career losers in the Ca legisature. I wonder at what point will Brown get his head out of the sand and state the obvious…that you can’t run a business (i.e. Ca) without generating revenue and cutting costs. We have a huge socialized govt in Ca (just ike Greece) that supports illegals, we are driving away businesses and taxing to death those that can barely afford to live here. I’d say we are more like Europe than rainbow brown wants to admit.

the book on how it works in calif is very very slim . the state cry;s we need money for this and that. coming up with lame reasons or even good ones at times . But it does not matter what reason they use for the cry’s of we need to rob you more . as if they get you to go along with them . they do not use the money for what they said they will anyways . they just find more ways to waste that money -then go back to what they think is a non stop full pocket -the tax payers .They have promised the gov workers a pie in the sky retirement package that they did not have and they have tryed 3 times with scams on the taxpayers to help bale them out . The last one was the really funny. A 1.00 more on taxes on tabaco items -saying that most of the money will go to cancer research . When in fact there was no writing to where any of the money would go and a fix that they could not amend this new tax hike for 15 yrs . They should not try to scam the public like that . say the truth . Hey we stuck our ***** out the window and not we think it is kinda cold and we are in a mess .help us out now . lol but really people if they promised people something they do not have then find it under a rock somewhere not in the general public’s pocket .

And if California has all this money turning up that is not getting much press by the way, how much is in the federal governments hidden rainy day accounts?

Gerry Brown (moonbeam) is in denial because he is responsible for a lot of the financial problems in California. During his first term as Governor back in the early 1970′s, Gerry gave the public service unions the right to collective bargaining and that was a fatal mistake which has come back to haunt him in this term as Governor. I think he thought he could get the unions to help him by renegotiating their lavish and totally unaffordable salaries and benefits which has risen in the last 50 years to become the single largest government budget cost item and forward looking financial liability. The retirement calculation algorithm is so screwed up that a public service union member can “spike” his last working year income with overtime, unused vacation, sick time, etc. and many of them retire with pensions higher then their working salaries which also has built in cost of living increases each year for life with survivor benefits. They pay little into either their pensions or medical benefits when working and get basically free medical until they go on Medicare.

This is a broadbased problem and instrumental in the growing number of cities in California (and in other states) declaring bankruptcy.

The tax and fee structure in California is so high that both companies and taxpayers are leaving in droves which is reducing the tax base while the costs are rising.

Mitt Romney chuckled a little when he mentioned California, however he actually was pretty close to the truth out here (I live in CA). Southern California has allowed so many illegals across the border coupled with the sanctuary city policies that LA is dominated by Hispanics, the Mayor is Hispanic, and most of the elected officials in LA and surrounding cities are Hispanic. This dynamic has overloaded the infrastructure and raised the cost of all of the services.

So, it is obvious that California is really the poster child of where the country at large is heading under the contemporary liberal leadership led by Obama.

Gov Brown says that California has a great deal of wealth and prosperity. The trouble with his theory is he wants to take it from those who succeed in order to buy more votes with give away programs. Greece, Spain and other European countries have abundant wealth also. You don’t have to be a visionery to understand that they were also at the stage that California is presently. They didn’t change and look what happened. The remainder of the wealth of those countries are needed to bail them out of fiscal ruin. That’s something to look forward to according to Jerry’s statement. And you wonder why the country and especially California are in trouble. The citizens of California deserve what they have. Good luck.
