Amazon CEO Gives $2.5 million to for WA Gay Marriage Law

By AP Staff

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, announced Friday they are donating $2.5 million to the campaign to defend Washington's same-sex marriage law.

With the gift, Washington United for Marriage has raised more than $5 million for its referendum campaign.

"It's a game changer for us," said campaign manager Zach Silk in Seattle. "It puts us in unique position to win."

But, his group is still the underdog, he said. In 32 previous elections nationally, same-sex advocates have lost.

The Washington election may be the turning point, thanks in part to the Bezos' generous donation, Silk said.

"They understand what's at stake for Washington families and what's at stake for the country," he said. "We're at a tipping point, and they really understand this is an historic moment, and they want to be on the right side of history and want to make history."

Last month Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and co-founder Bill Gates each donated $100,000 to support the law.

Referendum 74 was certified for the November ballot in May after gay marriage opponents in the group Preserve Marriage Washington turned in more than 240,000 signatures. The referendum seeks to overturn the gay-marriage law signed in February by Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Preserve Marriage Washington wants to preserve marriage as the union between one man and one woman, "because marriage is a unique institution that is profoundly in the common good," the group says on its website.

The same-sex marriage law was supposed to take effect June 7 but has been put on hold.

A "yes" vote on the referendum upholds the law, and a "no" vote overturns it.

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Maryland legalized gay marriage this year as well, but that state also is poised to have a public vote this fall.

In Maine, voters will decide on an initiative to approve same-sex marriage three years after a referendum overturned a law passed by the Maine Legislature. And in Minnesota, voters will decide whether to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

So far contributions from same-sex supporters to Washington United for Marriage far outweigh contributions to Preserve Marriage Washington.

Silk expects the organization seeking to repeal the law will receive an infusion of cash late in the campaign from the Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for Marriage, which was involved in ballot measures that overturned same-sex marriage in California and Maine.

Silk expects the other side will spend $4 million to $7 million.

"We take them at their word and we need to dig deep," he said.

A call to the Preserve Marriage Washington office early Friday morning was not answered.

Silk said that despite the recent big-name donors, 80 percent of his organization's 8,000 donations have been for less than $200.

"This is a grassroots movement," he said. "This is an issue of fundamental fairness."

No more Amazon.com for me either. I will change my views on same sex marriage when men get pregnant and women can impregnate themselves – until then the parts dont fit and its a no brainer for me. It has nothing to do with HATE.

“We’re at a tipping point, and they really understand this is an historic moment, and they want to be on the right side of history and want to make history.”

I’ve heard/seen this type of comment from a number of gay marriage advocates. Funny thing is there were a number of people in Germany who supported Hitler and said almost the same thing. Hitler promised to fix the German economy, to bring back pride to the German people after WWI, to make Germany a power again. They certainly made history but I don’t think anyone would suggest that they were “on the right side” of history. I suspect a great many of Hitler’s supporters really regreted their choice when the true scope of his agenda was realized.

He donated to protect families? So, babies pop out of anuses, right? Babies get conceived by sex toys! What fantasy world do liberals live in? I guess mommy or daddy never gave them birds and the bees talk. I guess they also funked biology classes too. I also guess that they didn’t read the latest sociology study that said that being raised by gay parents is not good for children. Oh, wait, that report is too homophobic! It can’t be true, because their feelings tell them that in ain’t so. How can smart people be so dumb?

Throughout history God’s people have been been trying to live by God’s Righteous law in a world full of man’s laws. Our country has historically had a reasonably good alignment between the two since its origins.

Sadly, as time has progressed … the gap between the two have increasingly widened from a few cracks in the armor to what is shaping up to become the Great Divide. Christ called His disciples to know that we, like He, would be persecuted for doing so. The rate of advancement and escalation of such things is something that is foreign to most of us in our country that we have not experienced in our lifetimes.

While I am in NO WAY advocating anything other that Marriage=Man + Woman … the world of man’s law around us is “Hell-Bent” on doing so, and is masterfully spinning it as the “right” thing to do. It is a pitiful indictment on our society as the volume of lambs being led to the slaughter is growing exponentionally, for their lack of knowing who the Author of Right really is.

The lost will always follow the world … sad, but true … especially when they think they are doing “right”. But if one doesn’t know the difference between “Right” and “right” … they can feel really righteous for opposing Righteousness. Sadly, they will come to learn how folly they have been to what we already know. Likely, we will not be able to correct them sufficiently, yet we will still be called to follow that which is “Right” and meanwhile endure those that dictate what is so-called “right”. We live in the world, but are not of the world … and our world is perpetually “Hell-Bent” on changing to ways that are not “Right”.

This is not the first time in the history of man that such has been a division of the wheat from the chaff … but there comes a time when we will be revealed as one or the other. You either subscribe to God’s definition of marriage and honor Him … or you don’t. Praise, Honor & Glory to God. If your actions are not aligning with such things, then you are choosing to be chaff rather than wheat. For the corporate and political pandoring for those things that are not honoring to God … those who do so will be honored by those who do not honor God … and not by God.

I will now have to tell my friends & family about Amazon … what “wheat & chaff” will evolve is to be seen.

I wonder if the gay community will now call boycott “un-American?”

Plus it is funny how when they lose they go to the courts to overturn the will of the people, but now we are going to the people. They will still complain? I guess the “will of the people” is only ok when THEY win!
